It's a tough thing for us newer folks to get these staples. The only thing to do is save up or trade up. I like to build up prize support to convert into expensive Eternal staples. It's kind of a fun goal system to work at.

I like the game enough to shell out for these things, especially if I can offset the burden of expense with prize support.

@ Didgeridooda: Stay tuned, bro. I will have a work in progress. Hopefully Beckett won't reject my request for a grade as flippant (which it totally is). But it's for posterity.

It feels good to goldfish with real cards man

June 10, 2015 4:32 p.m.

JakeHarlow says... #3

Yeah, it really does. Also, that shuffle practice. :)

June 10, 2015 4:50 p.m.

VampireArmy says... #4

I'm balls at shuffling now. I haven't had a real deck in like 2-3 years

June 10, 2015 4:56 p.m.

ThisIsBullshit says... #5

I'm fine until you give me EDH decks and then rip shuffling skills

June 10, 2015 4:57 p.m.

Didgeridooda says... #6

Write a nicely worded letter to go with it. Seriously, if it came back as a 0.137 or something, that would be awesome.

@Runlue * high five *

My dream job is to be a voice over actor.

;)

Runlue says... #8

Why... why did you wink.

June 10, 2015 5:04 p.m.

Tibs, the proper way to shuffle an EDH deck is split it in half, then shuffle the halves, then do something to kind of mix the halves together in a semirandom fashion. Repeat as necessary.

June 10, 2015 5:57 p.m.

elpokitolama says... #10

If you want to learn to shuffle like a professional, just ask! I'm a real life magician after all. :>

June 10, 2015 6 p.m.

JakeHarlow says... #11

@ Didgeridooda: Haha, yeah, it would be so great if they gave it some candidly terrible grade. That's pretty much the point anyway. I'll draft a polite request and recount the story.

June 10, 2015 6:03 p.m.

lama, are you really? Show us a trick! Wait... that probably doesn't work.

Unless you can magically teleport places :P

June 10, 2015 6:07 p.m.

Didgeridooda says... #13

I just hold half the deck in each hand. Put the bottom corners together, and slowly drop the top half into the bottom half. Flush it all together, and repeat. Double sleeved EDH decks take a little getting used too, they are slippery, and a little thicker, but reg EDH decks work just fine.

June 10, 2015 6:14 p.m.

>split deck in half and shuffle each half
Pleb detected.

Shuffle the whole thing like the animal you are.

Sagarys says... #15

Have you told your parents yet, elpokitolama? Are you openly magical or still in the hat?

June 10, 2015 6:34 p.m.

If I had a dream job (and I have done this) it would be anything with good pay + drafting magic and pulling enough to sell it back to the store for more than I paid.

June 10, 2015 6:40 p.m.

That's not a job.

June 10, 2015 6:42 p.m.

the first part is :)

June 10, 2015 6:43 p.m.

Epochalyptik my hands are too small for that shit

June 10, 2015 6:45 p.m.

Sagarys says... #20

So your dream job is to have a good job? And then also a hobby with the potential to make additional money, but only if chance is in your favor?

June 10, 2015 6:45 p.m.

NoPantsParade says... #21

I wouldn't mind becoming a dermatologist, honestly. Since skin problems run in our family, I wouldn't mind helping out those with similar problems since I can relate to it. I'm heavily considering it, but the cost of med school pushes me away.

June 10, 2015 6:47 p.m.

@Sagarys basically. honestly, I'll cross that bridge when I get there.

June 10, 2015 6:48 p.m.

Sagarys says... #23

That's called gambling, Derp. Your dream job is to have a job, and also a gambling habit.

June 10, 2015 6:50 p.m.

@Sagarys I guess so. then again, thats pretty close to buying/selling stocks.

June 10, 2015 6:54 p.m.

NoPantsParade says... #25

But I think buying and selling stocks has a much higher return than drafting and selling cards. Like I'd rather buy Netflix stock back when it was low than draft cards and gamble on hoping to pull high enough value. Sure there's higher risk but there's higher reward. Plus Netflix stock was a no brainer.

June 10, 2015 6:57 p.m. Edited.

Sagarys says... #26

Not to mention there's volumes of data you can utilize and research you can do to make educated purchases in the stock market. It's not 100% based on chance like drafting cards and hoping for the best.

June 10, 2015 7 p.m.

NoPantsParade says... #27

And balancing a good job and drafting might be harder to pull off as opposed to simply researching and buying and selling stocks. I guess that depends on how much time one devotes to researching though.

June 10, 2015 7:05 p.m.

I meant the gambling part...

June 10, 2015 7:14 p.m.

bigguy99 says... #29

Buying into stock is not gambling.

June 10, 2015 7:19 p.m.

kinda. you're hoping the company does well so you can earn all the cash-moneys.

June 10, 2015 7:20 p.m.

bigguy99 says... #31

You're not hoping. Stocks are not a guessing game; you do research and you invest into what's safe. The only time you take a risk is when you invest in new companies, but you don't do so without analyzing the risk and reward and how likely the company is to take off.

Please don't talk about topics you know little about. There's more to stocks than you can imagine.

June 10, 2015 7:21 p.m.

I will continue to talk about topics I don't know about as if I do. how else am I going to learn and continue to act smug?

June 10, 2015 7:23 p.m.

VampireArmy says... #33

You could try asking instead. Saves you time and humiliation

June 10, 2015 7:26 p.m.

sirbar says... #34

Or you could read up on the topic. Google is a wonderful thing, you know?

June 10, 2015 7:29 p.m.

bigguy99 says... #35

That kind of attitude is disgusting. No one wants to teach someone that thinks they know everything.

June 10, 2015 7:36 p.m.

Another thing about stock is that you have to have a good amount of money first. You'd have had to already made decent money Derp before the profits would start coming in.

Derp, you should totally invest in stock now. Simply because of this conversation.

June 10, 2015 7:38 p.m.

*comes back with popcorn*

June 10, 2015 7:38 p.m.

NoPantsParade says... #38

True story, kiddo. Nor does someone want to be around that kind of person.

June 10, 2015 7:39 p.m.

VampireArmy says... #39

Did you go to that GP yet pants? If so how'd you do?

June 10, 2015 7:40 p.m.

NoPantsParade says... #40

I don't think you need a good amount of money. You can start small and build up, if you're smart and careful with your money. Facebook and Twitter stock started low, as far as I can remember. I think it depends on how you define "good." But having a "good" amount is helpful nonetheless.

June 10, 2015 7:43 p.m.

NoPantsParade says... #41

Nope, that's this Friday and Saturday. Finalizing my burn deck tonight and tomorrow. If I do poorly, I'm just going to buy a challenge badge and do side events with my friend. I'll get back to you guys, though. I was at college orientation Monday and Tuesday.

June 10, 2015 7:44 p.m.

VampireArmy says... #42

Oh alright. I Thought you were taking that multi color reanimator thing?

June 10, 2015 7:46 p.m.

NoPantsParade says... #43

That was for FNM. I got bored of burn after playing it a couple times here and there. Then I took it to my first modern FNM at a new LGS, and no one really had a good time. It was pretty boring seeing their reactions to it. Plus my meta is mostly brews so there's a lot more freedom for brews. So I'm looking to build something a bit more exciting like Griselbrand reanimator combo stuff. I'd like to keep my Naya Burn deck for more competitive stuff like the GP, but I want something a bit more exciting and different for FNM. And Griselbrand is funny looking, so I'm likely going to take up a deck around him.

VampireArmy says... #44

Oh i see. Makes sense. I'm kinda doing the same with grixis delver. Gonna grab the pieces i don't have in case i to to an event that i don't feel mardu will do well at. That and i need a second deck because playing one deck only jusy gets boring

June 10, 2015 7:55 p.m.

kyuuri117 says... #45

Alright to be fair to Derp, he wasn't completely wrong and you guys aren't completely right either. There are many different types of stocks. There are safe, conservative stocks, yes. They grow at 1-3%. There are also stocks that grow at 10-15%, and those are indeed a big gamble. You have a much bigger chance of making a lot of money, and a much bigger chance of losing your money. And, of course, there are moderate stocks in between.

And no amount of research can 100% tell you what a stock is going to do. Stock brokers are not nearly as "in the know" as they would like you to believe. Some of em are great, the vast majority are decent, and the bad ones leave the industry, and leave it in debt. And the great ones got to the top by taking ballsy risks on high risk stocks and getting it right. They then invest the vast majority of that money into safer prospects such as mutual fund, and start again. They screw up, no big deal, most of their money is protected.

-Edit: Mutual fund, not mutual bond.

I will continue to talk about topics I don't know about as if I do. how else am I going to learn and continue to act smug?

That kind of attitude is still fundamentally disgusting, regardless of whether the criticism was fair or not.

June 10, 2015 8:23 p.m.

kyuuri117 says... #47

Eh didn't see that, was kinda just scrolling through and thought i saw another derp gang bang goin on, figured i could step in since it was something i know a little about. Yea no one should act like that.

June 10, 2015 8:36 p.m.

I thought he was joking....

June 10, 2015 8:38 p.m.

NoPantsParade says... #49

He could have been, but just from his posts on here, I'd guess he wasn't. Who knows. Anyone could be anyone on here. For all we know, Derp could be a sincerely nice, or not smug, kid in real life.

June 10, 2015 8:40 p.m.

There are few things I don't humor, and ignorance, feigned or actual, is one of them.
