As a Vermonter: (one of the only states to allow concealed carry without a permit and, I might add, one of the lowest crime rates in the states.) This makes me happy.

"You can control guns about as well as you can control drugs."

Citation please, VampireArmy.

Hello everyone. Are we talking about guns or magic? Also, I think I've stopped understanding how to play Magic at some point in the past week.

So I saw one of the funniest things i've ever seen regarding canada the other day on Imgur and saved it. Definitely very odd and probably considered shitposting since it's a very long tumblr post, but I kind of want to post it anyway...

The last time something like guns was banned in the us went smoothely did it?

June 24, 2015 10:08 p.m.

kyuuri117 says... #5

The gun debate is so stupid. The vast majority of guns used in felonies are unregistered illegal firearms. Banned or not, people who intend to commit crimes are going to get their hands on them, and quite easily too. All you are going to do by banning them is increase the black market for em.

Sounds familiar...oh and yes I'm in a bad mood. Such is life.

June 24, 2015 10:27 p.m.

kyuuri117 Is this the point where I point out that American culture is obsessed with dead ideals? Or, is this the point where I start giving everyone a wall of statistics that demonstrate that violent crime is lower in countries with banned or heavily restricted firearm regulations?

June 24, 2015 11:15 p.m.

VampireArmy says... #8

Bout as obsessed as non Americans deeming what is fit for American culture. Ironically the same people who often condemn us for having a play in the middle east.

CanadianShinobi actually that's not always correct. Sweden has boat loads of guns available to it's population and they have the lowest gun crime rate I've ever seen.

According to the stats I found after a few minutes on ye olde google I come up with these as of 2010:

It's 10th in the world in firearms per 100 people.

It has only 1.48 gun related deaths/100,000 people. (Including suicide.)

IIRC Sweden still has that "as soon as you get out of school you have 2 years mandatory military service" thing.

Being former military I'd make the argument that it's training that makes guns safer not banning.

June 24, 2015 11:34 p.m.

@Ohthenoises its really good, it has something for everyone, even you :). have you seen the trailers?

June 24, 2015 11:37 p.m. Edited.

VampireArmy says... #19

I am too young ,too wild, and far too impatient for children right now. No. I mean my girlfriend. We enjoy family movies together. I am however, old enough to have had children if i wanted to (21) I just vowed not to until I've found a suitable career and I've married first to avoid ending up like everyone else in my biological family. Ie poor and relatively miserable

June 24, 2015 11:39 p.m.

Ohthenoises says... #20

DERPLINGSUPREME Oh I've seen the trailers, that's not what I'm asking him to elaborate on.

VampireArmy OK! Thanks :p Now that I have the context I can read that how it was meant.

June 24, 2015 11:40 p.m.

oh. that makes sense.

June 24, 2015 11:40 p.m.

Ohthenoises I said nothing about the number of guns. I only mentioned about their regulations. Sweden still restricts access to guns. Only those registered may legally possess guns, ammunition. Furthermore, Sweden does thorough background checks of all applicants as well as the applicant must have a valid reason for buying the gun.

The numbers of firearms in a country is utterly meaningless and you completely misrepresented what I was saying.

Look, Americans can have all the guns they want, but your political system makes regulation, reasonable and largely justifiable regulation, nearly impossible.

June 25, 2015 11:54 a.m.

Morning. Anybody notice that the forums appear to be doing weird things on the front page?

June 25, 2015 12:52 p.m.

I havent seen a thing.

itchi, In case you hadnt heard, you should go see Inside Out. Itll chear you RIGHT up!

June 25, 2015 12:53 p.m. Edited.

6tennis says... #26

Itchi, problems on my end too. And what makes Inside Out so good?

June 25, 2015 12:55 p.m.

Its happy and its funny and delightful and deals with the issues of an 11 year old who just moved away and is having problems dealing with her new home and life in San Fran.

June 25, 2015 12:57 p.m.

That, uh, doesn't sound like my kind of movie.

June 25, 2015 1:01 p.m.

tru enough. I'd say the reason I said it, but itd make it sad.

June 25, 2015 1:02 p.m.

It's Pixar. The production company that makes so many good movies people gave them a pass for Cars 1 and 2. I still haven't seen the newest Jurassic Park movie though :(

June 25, 2015 1:03 p.m.

6tennis says... #31

DERPLINGSUPREME no secret-keeping, u pleb

I kid. But I'd love a different reason to watch it, because a movie about some 11-yr old trying to deal with her new life doesn't sound necessarily up my alley.

June 25, 2015 1:10 p.m.

@6tennis well, that kinda what its about, but almos tthe entire movie takes oplace in her head, with the emotions (which are tiny people in this ) fucking shit up and trying to fix it and etc etc.

also, I dont want to make people sad, so yes secret keeping.

Yo, guys. A lot of you (almost all of you) are regulars. I trust at least some of you to handle yourselves appropriately in the forums without my prompting you to do so. So for those users, I need your help. And for the others, please take my advice.

The other admins and I have been noticing a trend in the community. With increasing predictability, "regulars" and upgraded users are inciting arguments, berating others, or just being generally unhelpful. No single event was to blame for this, either. I called it a trend for a reason: it's something that's been disappointingly consistent for a while now.

What I'd like is to see people's first instinct be to help other members of our community. New users especially. If you notice someone having a hard time integrating with the flow of things around here, give them some friendly tips. Offer alternatives to their behavior. Don't rush to dismiss them.

This is where you come in. If you don't already follow the above principles, you should make a conscious effort to start. If you do and you see someone else acting in a toxic manner, please offer some gentle reminders to that individual to stay on topic and to keep in mind that this is a community. Offer advice to the other individual as well; what could they do to avoid generating that kind of reaction from others?

June 25, 2015 9:36 p.m.

VampireArmy says... #35

Been trying hard for that for a while. I'm on board of course

June 25, 2015 9:41 p.m.

xzzane says... #36

I'm not very active on forums generally, but I'll do my best to help.

June 25, 2015 9:43 p.m.

6tennis says... #37

I notice that the more active threads tend to be the ones where that kind of stuff happens. Often, arguments tend to escalate beyond the point that they should, and that trend is rising, no doubt. I agree with all of your statements.

June 25, 2015 9:47 p.m.

@Epoch, yeah, I'll definitely help out with that whenever I can.

I have, and still do, followed by that principle, but I admit that at one point or another, I probably followed suite out of frustration.

I'll make sure to always be on the watch for those kinds of situations, and do my best to gently and easily diffuse them by doing the things you described. :)

June 25, 2015 10:21 p.m.

bigguy99 says... #48

I've only ever looked at the part of game theory concerning the psychological aspects of making certain decisions and things like Nash equilibria and decision matrices. The topic is not fun stuff.

June 25, 2015 10:41 p.m.

NoPantsParade says... #49

Ah, there was an FRQ on game theory and Nash equilibrium, bigguy99, for AP Microecon. I did the FRQ's, then drew dicks on their game theory diagram. I hope mine is an example across all high schools for what not to do on an AP exam. The same holds true for AP US Gov. I'm going to miss those days.

I'm a page slow Epochalyptik but on the topic of the community decline; that's why I haven't been on very much as of late. All I see is arguments. As you know I like to try and mediate disagreements and try to get both parties to come to the middle.

Due to the trend you mentioned my paitence for such things has been on the decline just due to the amount of incidents. It's just overwhelming. Combine that with having a 1 month old and, well, you get the idea.

I'm glad that you are putting out a PSA about this. Thank you.
