That's the problem though, I did say that and even pointed out that the last time I bought anything really that wasn't food or Limited events was months ago, since I never really buy anything. But nope, I'm wrong and have no idea how economics work because I came out of her womb.

I think it's because their parents don't trust online retailers like coolstuffinc and friends, which is dumb. It makes my friend have to order cards for them. I would but I live further away from them.

Just tell them the cards hold value and you can sell later. That's what I said when I started buying staples more often and they questioned me.

I think the Benny Hill Theme is more appropriate. What if we combined the two?

Lol, my parents let me do whatever. 30$ pptq, 11$ draft a lot, 10$ of singles, a box every now and then, cool foreign singles in the case at my LGS.

I've never bought anything over like 20$ online though. Except that one time my grandmother let me get like 65$ worth of stuff on SCG.

I buy almost all of my cards online, unless I need it that day or something. The most I've ever purchased at one time was probably about $400-500 when I bought my b/w token deck.

GoldGhost012 I've taken to cashing checks instead of depositing them so my parents don't know and then buying cards from Epoch. My dad's impossible about me spending money on cards.

Most of my income is in cash so I am able to buy cards from my LGS or online with visa gift cards. I turn 18 soon so I'll be able to get my accounts in my name instead of my parents names.

That also works.

A couple of playmats I had ordered from inkedgaming arrived today, pretty happy about that.

July 30, 2015 7:01 p.m.

My parents seem to have some theory to the effect of "Magic has only been popular for a few years and it's nearing the end of its lifespan, so your cards definitely will not hold value," and refuse to abandon it no matter how much hard evidence I produce, so I have difficulty getting cards. I get sealed stuff for my birthday because I don't trust my parents to buy singles, and I can probably get my parents to allow me to spend about $300 a year if I'm convincing and I space it out right.

July 30, 2015 7:13 p.m.

@Programmer_112's parents: yes, because over 20 years is only a few, cards from sets years ago are over $100 so obviously they won't hold value.

It's been around for 15 years. I think that is the longest a. Card game has really been around. Tell them that you do know how economics work, maintain because you play this game. Mox opal is not getting reprint soon I'm pretty sure, so it rises in price most of the time. Why do you think that Black Lotus is in the thousands? Because it's good and it's been around for a long time. The older something is, the higher value it has. Unlike planes walkers whose value go up and down over time, mix opal will stay a good card, because as long as there are affinity players, they will hold value. And there will ALLWAYS be affinity players. See, even if magics lifespan is cut short, the prices will go up, they will just be from collectors that collect rare cards, AND, from players that still like to play even though there are no more sets coming out. See, WoC is so big, AND zoned by hasbro, that it will AT LEAST! Stay around from around 10-15 more years, giving ample time for Mox opals to then be on the reserved list, if they do, and have it again AT LEAST be in the hundreds if not thousands. That's for Mox opal. Fr ensnaring bridge, well my phone is about to die so more on that later XD

July 30, 2015 8:17 p.m.

@above: That was actually my exact argument (I even needed to convince them that Mox Opal was a good buy instead of a waste of money). Eventually I convinced them to let me buy them, but it took like 3 months.

Also, @GoldGhost012: are you building Top Control?

Coming up on 25 years, and seemingly stronger then ever.

There has to be an end point somewhere. I just don't see it being anytime soon. It will prob come once the power creep starts ramping up to create more profit.

Programmer_112: building Affinity and Lantern Control since Lantern shares quite a few key cards with Affinity.

July 30, 2015 8:47 p.m.

I think I saw a statement somewhere (Reddit maybe?) by a designer (maybe MaRo, my memory isn't very good) saying something to the effect of "Magic is limited by design space, but I don't think that we'll run out of design space within my lifetime". Eventually, there won't be enough ideas to keep making original sets, but Magic's lifespan is pretty long.

July 30, 2015 8:59 p.m.

Aah. I built Puresteel Storm hoping to build Affinity, but then Ravager spiked :(. I'm still working on Affinity, but I think it will take a lot longer than I had hoped.

July 30, 2015 9:02 p.m.

filledelanuit says... #22

Magic is limited by design space but mostly what that means is we will run out of good names and will have to start reprinting more. It's limited the same way Graham's Number is limited; technically but not practically.

Also, Graham's Number is fucking huge.

July 30, 2015 9:13 p.m.

I actually used to use Graham's Number for "infinite life". I'm not sure if that's actually allowed, but it was fun.

July 30, 2015 10:24 p.m.

filledelanuit says... #24

If I'm playing for fun I'll usually choose A(Graham's#!, Graham's#!) where A(x,y) is the Ackerman function. Unfortunately I'm don't have a clue how I would even begin to describe the magnitude of A(Graham's#!, Graham's#!), it is stupidly huge.

July 30, 2015 10:39 p.m.

Ohthenoises says... #25

Why do people come out of the woodworks to wish someone happy birthday but never talk otherwise?

July 31, 2015 8:02 a.m.

I think that Busy Beaver(Graham's Number) is probably bigger, although I can't actually be sure because I'm really bad at computational math.

Also I think that the birthday thing is basically a way to avoid feeling guilty about not talking to people.

July 31, 2015 12:30 p.m.

Wait of course I can't be sure because busy beaver isn't computable.

July 31, 2015 12:31 p.m.

filledelanuit says... #28

I don't think you're right about that. The ackerman function grows stupidly quickly. A(5,5) cannot be represented in normal notation.

A(3,1)=13 A(4,1)=65533 A(5,1) is to large for wolfram alpha to calculate it although it can be written using up arrow notation. A(5,1)=2\uparrow\uparrow\uparrow (4) - 3 where the \uparrow is the tetration.

kyuuri117 says... #29

GoldGhost012 I'm 24, so I don't really get flak from my parents about spending money on stuff other than a "are you sure you want to be spending money on cards?", but what i've told em is: The cards i'm buying retain value short term, and since I get to play with them, i'm getting extra value out of my money. Long term, sometimes they lose value, and sometimes they gain value. It's a substitute stock market that I get to interact with on a daily basis, without my cards actually losing money. I'm using my money for fun, without actually losing it.

The worst feeling is when it's 10:30 at night and you're trying to get to a state park in the middle of nowhere with no cell service, and you almost pop a tire on a gravel road that leads to a dead end, after passing two graveyards.

Or when an automatic toilet flushes when you're still using it.

July 31, 2015 2:02 p.m.

kyuuri117 says... #31

Or, or, putting your foot into a shoe, without a sock, when there's a big harry spider in it.

I can attest to that being a bad feeling.

July 31, 2015 2:15 p.m.

Well, the Ackermann function is computable, so Busy Beaver is larger than Ackermann for sufficiently large N. So we really have to determine whether or not Graham's Number is sufficiently large, which it seems it should be. The problem is that both functions create such unimaginably large numbers that I'm not actually certain that even Graham's number is large enough.

At some point Busy Beaver wins though.

July 31, 2015 2:16 p.m.

Another bad feeling is when you pick up a towel after getting out of a shower and a spider crawls from it onto your naked body.

Has anyone who drafts ever noticed anyone bringing pre-con'd decks? My lgs has a regular cheater who's been called out a few times for trying to clump lands and tap em for more than he has, or try and color fix this way, stuff like that, but recently (especially in the pre-release and release weekends in sealed a few weeks ago), he's been forcing the same colors every event and always seems to have the best commons, uncommons and bombs in the colors.

Now that it's back to draft, he's always got different bomb rares, with some overlap on uncommons and commons, but he's literally always in black green and always pulls a ton of usable stuff. Last week, surprise surprise, he not only "pulled" a foil lili, he pulled a regular lili, a Kothophed, two fleshbag marauders, elemental bond, some other uncommons i can't remember, and a ton of other great commons like multiple Rhox and Fetid Imps.

It just seems so unlikely that he's getting all of this in draft, every week. Never caught him in the act, but as i get paired against him every couple of weeks regularly (out of like the 30-40 people who draft), it's just really getting on my nerves. Sorry for the rant, but just wanted to figure out what to do about this, as the owner doesn't care he's a known cheater.

I had a guy at my lgs get caught with cards up his sleeves and DQed. Best part is they were mountains. That's it. There were like 5 up there.

Then again this is the same guy we have had other, more...... Violent, issues with him that got a 6 month ban.

July 31, 2015 4:41 p.m.

HolyFalcon says... #36

What'd he do Noises?

Report it your LGS owner/worker Kyuuri. Or maybe monitor him during deck building.

July 31, 2015 4:45 p.m.

Ohthenoises says... #37

Also, nothing beats my feelsbad spider story.

We were on a field training exercise (army) and we were out there for a week, when we went to pack up a tent pole hit a cinderblock wall that was like 1' away from where the tent was.

Out comes, crawling out, about 30+ full grown black widows. Needless to say much fire was involved. (Axe body spray makes an excellent flamethrower.)

Black widows. 1 foot away. For a week. Fuk.

July 31, 2015 4:46 p.m.

kyuuri117 says... #38

He's been reported for cheating multiple times. Owner won't kick him out since here's there 4-7 days a week and makes him money. I don't want to go anywhere near him since he bathes once a month.

Edit: That was mean, it's probably twice a month.

July 31, 2015 4:49 p.m. Edited.

Ohthenoises says... #39

He has threatened twice, to bring in a gun and kill everyone.

Needless to say, I concealed carry with the store owner's permission sometimes. I have a 2 month old, I'm not risking my son's life on the off chance that unstable shit actually collects the balls to do as he says.

July 31, 2015 4:55 p.m. Edited.

HolyFalcon says... #40

You could get some people together and tell the owner you're not giving him any business until he is suspended/banned.

Cant the DCI get involved? Like you can report him for cheating to a local judge? And then his DCI number gets banned?

July 31, 2015 4:55 p.m.

kyuuri117 says... #41

For my situation, local judges are aware, and since he was caught the first few times have made an effort to have at least one judge at the shop during all MTG events. Which is why the guy's stopped trying to cheat with slight of hand, and instead cheat with pre-con'd decks. Very hard to catch someone you want nothing to do with doing that.

July 31, 2015 4:58 p.m.

Jesus fucking christ lol

Jfc to what part tibs?

July 31, 2015 5:06 p.m.

I don't usually mind spiders, but if there's more than like 10 they freak me the fuck out.

30 black widows? Scary as fuck.

July 31, 2015 5:19 p.m.

Oh gosh. I'm terrified of spiders... >_<

And those lgs stories, this is why casual is better. XD

Then again, it's really fun to go to tournaments and such to meet all the new people. I've played some of the best games at different card shops with people I just met :)

Magic is awesome.

Never had a problem with cheaters at my LGS. Just this guy that tilted to the max when I beat him in a game where he had mana issues. I got 1 more pack them him and got the FNM promo (Path).

Cool part about my LGS is that I'm a 'regular', so I get called by name by the employees/owner which is more pleasing than it seems.

July 31, 2015 6:56 p.m.

I'm hardly a regular. XD

I like going to new lgs a lot. Like, I think I've been to 8 or 9 total.

I go every now and then, so they kind of know me. Turns out my LGS is closed tonight, and my other plans were cancelled. I don't know what to do right now. Time to wash the car, I guess.
