Mine book is boxed up and I have no inclination to open my boxes. I do not want to feel "settled in" in this place as it is only a temporary adobe.

wtf is heart of darkness? if its a tragically old book, I already know I won't enjoy it, but you're making sound even worse than I anticipated...

It is heralded as one of the most classic pieces of literature. This was made back during the time of the African Expeditions. Every highschool student who is in the American program of learning will read this book.

I never read it Femme. Just saying not everyone will read it.
Also, Mien Book? You got a dress with an SS to go with it? Lol.
October 23, 2015 7:33 p.m.
It's a really important book about British colonialism that opened up a new dialogue about the way in which we view the African continent. It's purposefully ambiguous to bridge the gap between "glorious British Imperialism" and the literal darkness we brought to half of the world in the 19th century. It's also written in (almost) olde English.
October 23, 2015 7:36 p.m.
Also English was the authors like 4th language, which doesnt help.

As a senior in high school in America I have never read this book.

Now to kill a mockingbird, that book is on every American reading list ever for schools.
Boring as hell.

Really noises? I loved it personally. Pretty predictable though.
October 23, 2015 8:38 p.m.
Ohthenoises says... #11
That's why it was boring. I figured it out by the first 1/3 of the book if not sooner.
Once you have a book figured out it loses its appeal.
I've always like fantasy/scifi books more.
Two of my favorite authors are Terry Brooks and Terry Goodkind for the Sword of Shannara series and the Wizards First Rule series. Brooks brings in scifi but that's a bit of a spoiler.

DERPLINGSUPREME On a scale of a mile where you're at the beginning and I'm at the end, you just gained a one hundredth of an inch.
Ohthenoises I don't know, I guess I can still appreciate the book even if I know the ending if it's written well enough. In like 90% of books, you can guess the ending halfway in, but that doesn't stop people from reading them.

VampireArmy: Eww, Redwall. For some reason I could never get into that series. The whole talking fantasy animals kinda ruined it for me.
Anyways, being only in middle school, we get to read easy crap like The Outsiders and I Am Number Four.

For those that like fantasy, Garth Nix's "The Abhorsen Chronicles" are really well done. Additionally, David Eddings' "The Belgariad" and "The Mallorean" series (hell pretty much anything done by him) are hidden gems that don't get much spot light.
My personal literature goal is to feel worthy enough to read Little Women.

The last one I got a chance to read was the one that he ends up performing a heist into Hades. Has another one come out since then?
October 24, 2015 1:27 p.m.

I believe there have been several since then, not sure which one that was though so I'm not entirely sure
They all blend together after a while

Yeah. Uh, he ends up meeting Hades himself, who apparently really like what Harry's been doing. He's working for that guy that is in charge of all the Silver Coins with Fallen Angels sealed in them.

There's one book after the Hades heist I think, it came out a few months ago. Series is great, and I'm looking forward to reading his new book in his new series when it comes out in paperback.
As far as Garth's abhorrent series goes, actually just started it I think. Reading Sabriel right now.

If you ever find Garth Nix's "7 Towers" series (7 small books) don't read them. While the world is fabulously created, it gets dragged on for far too long and becomes boring really quick. Sort of like The Wheel of Fate series, but gets boring quicker.

In other news: I've been going on a retro gaming spree. First up was Secret of Mana, and now I'm getting through Tales of Phantasia.
I wish the American versions of games didn't take out the sexuality that was put in in the Japanese versions. The characters and the world they are in are much more vibrant with it untouched.
October 24, 2015 9:47 p.m.
VampireArmy says... #36
I read somewhere that they do that because they think that Americans will view them as barbaric if they keep the nudity. Something that apparently goes all the way back to our first relations with them
October 24, 2015 9:51 p.m.
Femme_Fatale says... #37
I personally think that it is just American's fearing porn/NSFW stuff. It's never really a simply accepted thing, it's always something to over dramatize when it comes to media, products, companies and self-imagery.
October 24, 2015 10:16 p.m.
Femme_Fatale says... #38
Mainly because I don't think it is the Japanese that do it to their games, but rather whoever looks over and garners whatever is deemed as acceptable in the western area. Vivian from Paper Mario is a good example of this.

I must say ... the SNES (original) version of Tales of Phantasia is a lot easier than I remember it being in the GBA version.

So I just got back from a camping trip and it looks like we a a ton of interest in a book group. So, What should be the first book we should read? I vote for Dark Tower: Gunslinger.
Any other possibilities for the first book? Or do we all like this one? And out of you lot who talked about books who would actually join?

Femme, I still maintain that one cannot refer to themselves as a true gamer until they have beaten TMNT on the SNES.
Hardest game in existence.
Harder than Dark Souls IMO.
October 25, 2015 9:54 a.m.
Femme_Fatale says... #42
What about Battle Toads? And Dark Souls isn't hard, just irritating.
October 25, 2015 1:09 p.m.
Ohthenoises says... #43
I've played and beaten both. TMNT required me to stop playing for a while to collect myself.
Battle toads is hard don't get me wrong but TMNT is about twice as hard IMO.

On a separate note, today at worked has been the worst day in my working career.
A garbage can had been smelling pretty bad for about a month now, but it only smelled bad when you would change the bag. As this was only once a day, my coworkers and I kinda just ignored it.
Today, the bag broke and I had to tip the can over with the help of a coworker, to put it into a new can. And what comes sliding out of the can, onto the floor? Anyone want to guess? If you guessed a month and a half old dog shit, mixed with coffee and spoilt milk, you guessed right!
Almost fucking vomited on the spot and all of our customers left immediately. And guess who was lucky enough to clean it up? Me.
Fucking college degree, and cleaning up coffee infused dog shit in dunkin donuts. I'm fucking done. Need something else to do. And how the fuck does dog shit get into our garbage cans? Doesn't even make any sense.

October 25, 2015 7:41 p.m.
VA seriously? How often can this possibly happen?
Last month (I was off for a few days fortunately), apparently someone took a poop in the corner of our bathroom, and then covered it up with the garbage can. The next morning the place had to be evacuated when they found it.
What the hell is wrong with people?
It's not like this is accidental. It can't possibly be accidental.

Sure! No reason why not? I want to start with some more well known books (to get people into it) then get into the more analytical/philosophical stuff.
So why don't you join when I start Femme?
