And I like to think that a primary reason otherwise capable people are stupid is because they didn't as children learn essential life skills in a meaningful way or have the ambition to pursue self betterment. This may be because of parental failure (a vicious cycle), teacher failure, or individual apathy or misplaced priorities.

Intellectual stupidity/dishonesty is a problem. I make it a point not to associate with people who can't comprehend anything beyond their own belief system and evaluate it with any objectivity. That's probably why I'm immediately repulsed by the militantly religious/nonreligious, pseudointellectuals, and Fox anchors.

Those are fun too.

You could try reading. Or learning a craft. Or lifting. Or learning to cook.

I guess those all fall under the category of "be smarter."

Find something that fascinates you and learn it. For me math fascinates me so I learn it. Some people are fascinated by explosives and they blow stuff. Thermite is pretty cool. It's not even that hard to make.

Learn programming. There's money in that field... until we program a computer to do it for us...

If a team of programmers taught a computer how to program itself, they would literally have no one but themselves to blame for losing their job. It would be one of the most moronic things a human being has done in centuries.

And of course, since most programmers are sci-fi nerds (not that there's anything wrong with that), they are all probably actively trying to accomplish this.

Isn't self-building code a requisite element of most dystopian AIs?

December 20, 2015 12:20 a.m.

kyuuri117 says... #12

I have no idea, I took one coding class and hated it way back in high school. But, the idea of building something with the end goal of having it invalidate your entire career for everyone on the globe seems rediculously stupid.

Anyway, played fallout 4 for the first time in a week and a half (havnt come close to beating it yet), and fifteen minutes in I'm being charged at by four people with flame throwers, while their friends toss molotovs at me. If I hadn't had my power suit on at the time, I woulda been smoked so fast, would not have even been fair. To put it in better perspective, I had two pieces of the armor actually permanently break during the fight.

Anyway, killed most of em (and had to eat like ten stim packs cuz the guys without flame throwers had infinite cheat codes on for Molotov cocktails), and was cleaning up, when I hear a whistling sound. I literally had a second and a half to process the "what is that? Wait a-OH SHI-" before the boom happened and the screen went white. Some ass hat npc shot a fucking nuke at me from the top of a building.

In hindsight, it's probably for the best considering my power armor was ruined, but I kinda decided that that was enough fallout for the night.

I had been postponing the "Go find and kill the sea monster" quest in boston that turns out to be a submarine. Was kinda disappointed, even went and brought my power armor. (This was why I had it for the fight with the Flamers). Anyway, the dude inside sent me on a quest to this place I had cleared before, but hadn't actually "cleared", so I was like, sure, what the hell, was just raiders in there before.

Not so much. They were called "flamers" and they kicked my ass.

Stuff like The Last of Us, Mass Effect series, Fable 1, Halo 1, The Drake's Fortune series, Bioshock 1, Deus Ex: Human Revolution, and a few choice others are games i'll always be glad that i've played, and experienced when they were at the height of their respective technology. Definitely some of the best of the best, and if you own the system's they were for, I'd go ahead and buy them immediately. A lot of them left me reeling for multiple reasons, and the fact that they delivered an experience I would never have gotten from a book or a movie/tv is something i'll always love them for.

Stuff like The Elder Scrolls, the rest of the Halo series, Call of Duty, any GTA game, Mario Kart, Destiny, Assassins Creed, Goldeneye 64, and a good amount more A rated titles, while amazing, were not nearly of the same caliber. I could have never played them, and at this point, it wouldn't have ever really mattered to me.

Sure, the games are great, they're well made and are fun. But they aren't unique experiences. You can experience Skyrim in any half-assed fantasy novel. You can experience Call of Duty in any war there ever was or will be. I wouldn't ever call them a waste of money, but I wouldn't call them necessary to any gaming experience. I'm sure others disagree.

Honestly Tibs, while others might tell you otherwise, in the grand scheme of things there isn't much you've missed from not playing video games. But if I could make one recommendation, it's to go out and buy/borrow a ps3/4, and buy/borrow The Last of Us. It will be one of the best experiences in story telling you will ever experience in your life.

@kyuuri117 I'll have to take up arms with you about the GTA franchise, They are mostly great games and respectively revolutionary with their open world technology.

GTA 5 has actually spoiled alot of games for me just with how well it can do everything you want, A shooter, Driver, Sandbox, Flight, Physics, everything is just super detailed and on point, even down to little benign details like workers washing windows or NPC's just washing cars/playing golf etc, It's a super well done game and a very damn fun story as well.

...and don't even get me started on the mod's you can do with it, If my computer could run GTA i'd stop playing it on XBL and mod the eff outta it because there's so damn much to do with the engine that they've built.

But I do agree with a few choices on you're list. Namely Mass Effect, such an amazing story.

December 22, 2015 12:49 a.m.

kyuuri117 says... #36

I should have stated that I count GTA 5 as an exception to the series. Most of em are fantastic, but the acting and story in GTA 5 was phenomenal and definitely pushed it ahead of it's cousins..

And speaking of cousins, "hey it's your cousin" Roman from GTA 4 can go fuck himself.

kyuuri117 says... #37

If you think about it, GTA is all about living the "no rules" all american dream. Living how you want to, making money illegally, jacking cars, etc. etc. If you want to experience that, you can just read the news. So as well done as they are, for the most part I don't consider them original stories.

December 22, 2015 1:12 a.m.

ChiefBell says... #38

The Elder Scrolls was a unique experience for a western rpg many years ago. It's not so much now, but certainly during the oblivion days there was nothing that had the same feel as it, that also had the same polish. There's certainly nothing like it in terms of world development. I mean, the game has actual books you can read, in-game.

My LGS's going to organize trials for BOM european series in Madrid. The winner gets 36 boosters and two byes, the second gets a single bye and two boosters...

Seems really interesting, but fairly hard to achieve as this is going to attract some of the best Parisian players out there. Guess I'll try anyway, to see if I made some progress in piloting DnT!

By the way, is anybody there going to attend the tournament in Madrid?

December 22, 2015 4:42 p.m.

kyuuri117 says... #40

As far as games go, you're right in that nothing has surpassed The Elder Scrolls series for world building.

However I was just trying to point out that as far as experiences go, inside and outside of video games, you could get the same experience The Elder Scrolls offers by reading a series of fantasy novels. In that, it's not unique.

Add The Batman franchise, Souls franchise and Ori and the Blind Forest to that list of the best of the best.

December 23, 2015 10:50 p.m.

kyuuri117 says... #43

Souls is on there, but Batman I wouldn't include as you can get the batman experience through multiple comics, tv shows and movies. Not saying that the Arkham series doesn't deserve the 9/10 and 10/10's it gets, they definitely do, but it's not original. You could never play the Batman games, and instead read the DC comics, and you'd have experienced "Batman". The reason I have Souls on the top list is because even though there are plenty of fantasy books and TV shows and movies out there, none of them focus on minimalist story telling with a side of horror.

Never heard of Ori, but as it's on the steam sale, think I'll check it out.

After checking out the trailer, I'd say that it looks pretty damn original for a platformer, and the music was pretty awesome. If it had a fantastic story, i'd put it in my top list. Honestly not a fan of platformers, but that looks great.

I tried rogue legacy, thought it was great at first, but ended up just getting very tired of it.

And yea, I loved bastion. Never finished it though. Got like 70% though it before I got too busy to play it, and never went back and finished it. Was a few years ago.

Also really loved Transistor.

I guess I don't hate platformers, I just don't like traditional platformers.
