@Tibs: There are some pretty fit girls out there. If anything, it's only really expected that women will be toned or just slim if they work out. Guys are pretty much expected to grow some pride-inducing muscle mass.

Epochalyptik: That's funny because I've been doing more toning and whatnot for like two years now, but I'm a runner, so I have a leaner build so I don't have any other options. My friends think it's silly I'd rather be leaner and not bigger, but whatever. Personally, I'd rather be skinny and have muscle tone rather than bulky and not have it show, unless you cut the fat off. I made it my goal this year to get more vascular all around, and I've made significant progress over five months. I've always been vascular from running and weight lifting combined with genetics, but I've been paying more attention to what I eat so I've cut a lot of calories out. And I'm pretty happy with it so far. My friends think the veins are disgusting, but I like them. They look neat and on a good day, they look gross. In a good way.

ThisIsBullshit, there's a girl at my gym who pretty much has that same build as the last picture DERPLINGSUPREME posted. Please don't do that.

And DERPLINGSUPREME, to answer your question, I'd bring The Complete Annotated Grateful Dead Lyrics. Nothing beats the Dead. I could die happy reading that.

May 5, 2015 8:41 p.m.

would anyone like to guess why I'd bring you guys?

May 5, 2015 8:44 p.m.

Presumably so we could kill and eat you first be friends forever.

May 5, 2015 8:47 p.m.

@NoPantsParade: I have a very fortunate build. As long as I actually start eating properly and tweak my routine, I should be able to look approximately how I want within one year. Which is totally fine.

The main challenges right now are getting appropriate nutrition daily and finding a consistently challenging and productive workout routine. I have a spreadsheet of exercises for various muscle groups, and I'll eventually start mixing and matching. The issue right now is that I need greater foundational strength to really get what I need to from those exercises.

May 5, 2015 8:51 p.m.

Tibs it depends on how far away the island is from civilization. If you have a motor boat you will run out of gas fast. If it's a row boat you will surely run out of energy.

Epochalyptik: What I found that worked best was chocolate milk. After every workout, I'd just mix some Hershey's chocolate syrup with the milk, and voila. Did that for a while and got quite a bit of muscle, but I stopped now. What works best, like you said, is variation. I've got my days organized. Monday, Thursday are chest/triceps; Tuesday, Friday are biceps/back/shoulders; and Wednesday is class day at the YMCA (not sure if you have access to those) and core afterwards. Saturday is HIIT/core. And Sunday is rest day or making up for a skipped day. I don't do legs because I mix my HIIT days into lifting days, and I can't afford to injure myself. I never considered a spreadsheet like you said, so I might give that one a go over the summer. I just do whatever I'm feeling for that particular day.

You could try a whey protein supplement. I've always been natural, but decided to join the bandwagon in March. It helps a lot. It's satiating so your calories are cut significantly. You still have to get other nutrients and whatnot in, so I mix hemp and flaxseeds into my shakes. I find that two hardboiled eggs and three cups of nonfat Chobani yogurt mixed with granola at breakfast, lunch, and before bed is a great way to stay full. I think yogurt contains casein protein, which helps your body not break down muscle while sleeping, so you avoid that catabolic state. I allow myself one cheat day per week so my metabolism doesn't go out of whack, either. My issue is getting vegetables in.

There's really no cookie cutter way to reach fitness goals since everyone is different, but that's what I do. Also, green, black, or white tea is awesome, and you can't go wrong with it. Ever.

If any of your friends are having suicidal thoughts it's actually better to talk to them about it rather than avoid it. It actually lessens the likeliness that they will go through with it. But that's all I'm going to say. I'd bring a fellow human being, preferably someone I would get along well with.

May 5, 2015 9:11 p.m.

A FRICKING HUGE ATOM BOMB. If I'm gonna die, you're all gonna die with me :)

May 5, 2015 9:12 p.m.

@NoPantsParade: Natty isn't really a huge deal for me. I'm in it for the health and the physique.

I have piles of green tea at the office. I've been drinking two cups in the late morning and water at all other times.

One of the problems I've found is that I can't really do pre-workout shakes (anything but water for 1-2 hours before and I feel bloated and slightly uneasy), and I have a hard time eating in the morning. I was doing eggs and veggies for a few weeks, but I've been skipping immediate breakfasts recently. I generally open a yogurt or have an apple once I get to the office, though.

I do worry that I don't actually consume enough calories in a day. I tend not to eat unless I'm hungry, and I generally don't eat a ton until dinner.

What's your take on splitting biceps/triceps into separate days rather than a combined arm day? I see people go back and forth on it, but I'm beginning to think a split might be worth trying.

May 5, 2015 9:13 p.m.

NoPantsParade says... #33

Epochalyptik, I don't do pre-workout shakes. The whey protein is a special kind of protein that's able to get to your muscles much faster to rebuild them. It's best to take it immediately after working out. The only "milk" I consume is almond milk. I can't stand the taste of protein powder with water. And almond milk is like 30 calories or something.

I always try eat huge breakfasts, mainly because I love breakfast foods. But in all seriousness, it gets the metabolism going, so I try to make them huge before school. I worry about not getting enough calories as well. It's hard to count/estimate without actually paying attention to every little detail, so I just eat whenever I'm hungry. Normally 3 meals per day with nuts (cashews/trail mix mostly) in between.

I've got a friend that does triceps/biceps in one day and then chest/back the next day. He prefers that, but he doesn't have a reason. He just says my routine is stupid. My issue with that is that since the triceps work with the chest day (like bench press), you aren't giving your triceps the 48 hours they need to rebuild. So you're essentially just breaking down more muscle. The same goes for biceps and back with pull ups and whatnot. So like on triceps/chest day, I can bench press, do dips, etc. and give them the full 48 hours to recover then do biceps/back/shoulders the next day. Plus you can still get isolation exercises in on those particular days.

I'd give the split a go and see what happens within a month or two. Some people prefer arm day like you said. But that's what I've been doing for two years now. Running less would probably help with avoiding breaking down muscle, so I'm not that reliable, or else I'd be able to give a better account. But I've definitely seen results from my routine. I always wonder what I'd look like if I didn't run that often.

@xzzane none of my friends are suicidal. If they were, I wouldnt be friends with them. even if it'd make them worse, I would make sure not to get too close to them, b/c were they to actually do it, I wouldnt want to deal with that, And I wouldnt BE able to deal with that.

I have an arm day, a chest/triceps day, a back/biceps/shoulders day, one for legs, and the other days are whatever I want, really. I do some core every time I go. Cardio isn't really my thing (I'm in it for the physique and strength, mostly). Four days a week is good enough, but five or six is definitely better. Also, I don't powerlift at all. Everything I do is either some sort of machine or dumbbells.

NoPantsParade says... #40

bigguy99: That's interesting. I haven't seen that kind of organization before. Then again, I don't really look up routines. How has your arm day combined with chest/triceps day, etc. day been working out for you?

I love how we're toggling back and forth between suicide and exercise, this is the weirdest conversation I've had in a while.

Actually, a lot of my friends hurt themselves a lot, but they aren't suicidal; just emo. So I don't really have experience with that kinda stuff.

I also rely on boxing as my only form of exercise, so I don't have much to say there either.

May 5, 2015 10:05 p.m.

@tibs of course not.

May 5, 2015 10:07 p.m.

bigguy99 says... #43

I do arm day earlier in the week usually and then legs a day or two after. The protein shakes from both days (it's around 65g of whey per shake since I do two scoops) and whatever other foods I eat - which, for the most part, are chicken, rice, nuts, fruits, and granola - make me feel well enough to do the other two workouts soon after legs. I'll usually have an extra arm day just because I like to focus on it the most and at this point it doesn't usually take me two days to recover from it.
