We have politicians in parties. Within each party there is a leader. We vote for parties and the leader of the party becomes the prime minister. We don't really vote for like 'one guy'. We vote in a more generic way.

We are currently conservative due to the 2008 crash. Our deficit was high and a conservative government offered economic measures to fix this. They failed, and in doing so cut nationalised services in such a fashion that our national health service was largely privatised, and tens of thousands of people who previously received government benefits just..... died.
Unfortunately they are so good at propaganda that they are selling it as a 'win', a 'solid victory'. I mean sure, in the short term it is but in the long term we're now completely fucked because we've sold off our infrastructure. The other thing is the fact that actually prior to us voting in the right wing party our deficit was lower than the USs and lower then Germany's - it wasn't even that bad! Economics has everyone running scared when in reality we still have a brilliant credit rating and borrowing levels under this current government have been higher than under any other.
We need to go left wing again. Basic Keynesian economics would acknowledge this and too many people have suffered. They say 'austerity measures', what they actually literally, measurably mean is 'letting poor people die'.

Was the crash any worse than the whole real estate fiasco in the US around ten years ago? I know nothing about modern politics abroad and I'm not sure if you know anything about what's going on here.

It was essentially all indicative of the same kind of basic economic processes. At its most simple level - a lot of people defaulting on debt, and a lot of banks trading debt with each other that they knew would never get paid back.
Both the UK and US government also massively overestimated the stability of their respective financial institutions.
The problem we had post crash is that the government poured public money (ie. my taxes) into the banks to save them from all the debt. Essentially the public as forced to help them pay it off. So everyone ended up being completely broke, in order to save the vested interests a few billionaires. Ok - that's a very large oversimplification, but essentially it was the top earners that stood to lose the most when the banks went under so we made the decision to preserve their capital by just.... giving them money.
Worth noting that the northern european countries that DID NOT bail out the bank are now prospering.
Also Free Market Capitalism is all about letting failing businesses fail. Kind of funny how all the right wingers are desperate for it then when things dont go their way they double back and change their mind.

It is worth pointing out that generally the UK is way more left wing than most other countries. We have free healthcare, we give unemployed people money, we give sick people money, we have a minimum wage that's like $20 an hour that everyone is entitled to, we have higher education (university) that is capped at costing a maximum of $15,000 a year, we buy houses for people who cant afford to buy their own, we offer state funded maternity leave, and many more things. AND we have one of the lowest budget deficits of any country ie. - we are not actually broke economically.
