I know of a few guitarists here on the site through friendly convos. Just curious as to who might play what instrument/s and what genres.
I play guitar, voice, bass, hand drums, synth, dabble in banjo, mandolin, and sitar. I have a Godin Solidac electric as my main axe, made in Canada (beautiful guitar), Washburn WG-580 electric, and an Oscar Schmidt acoustic. I run two tube combo amps, a 30 watt 1x12 Marshall Artist 4203 and a 20 watt Hughes & Kettner 20th Anniversary Edition Tube. I have a buttload of pedals including lots of Electro Harmonix (Muff, Mistress, Wiggler, Memory Man w/Hazrai, Small Stone, MicroSynth), a Ross Compressor, Vox Wah, and a Tube Screamer.
My roots are in old school R&B/Motown, Reggae, Blues, Classic Rock and have gravitated towards jam band/experimental stuff ala Mars Volta, Radiohead, Phish, Umphry's McGee, and Bela Fleck and the Flecktones.
Nuff bout me. What bout you?

HOLY SHIT!!! I just had an idea...
We should start a TO band, and name it after the website!
We could record our tracks and email them around to each other and send it to one of the guys on here that could mix it down.
then YeaGO can put it up as one of those things you could get on the site if you become a premium member, or something to that effect.
We would have to figure out how to send the guitar tabs to each other, and then have a standardized way to record the stuff, but it could work. I heard that the band dragonforce does this al the time.

No one actually records together anymore. The internet is great. Bands don't really exist like they used to.
December 17, 2014 4:59 a.m.
Well. That was an over exaggeration. Some do but some don't. It's usually just bands that hate each other that don't, to be honest, think guns n roses etc.
There's still a lot of advantages to recording the traditional way. I mean, I'm so old school I learnt to mix down on analogue software. None of that digital shit over here.

ChiefBell I'm jealous of that analouge set up you have. That's awesome.

this is a couple of my friends project, called themselves Splintertwin. its awesome, you should check it out if you get a minute. Splintertwin
The mixes are a little shitty. They wanted to make some fun stuff to play live. Its made with drum tracks, they cant find a drummer lol.

I always like to record in person, if possible. We normally warm up with a 15 minute jam session prior to recording. It just gets me in the mood to play some music.
I've tried "long distance" recording and it never really worked out for me. Everyone has their own ideas of how a song should sound and it's difficult to write, record, and re-record without immediate feedback from the other members. Everything just takes longer.

I would assume that could be an issue. But I mean, there is always things like skype and random 3AM phone calls.
it can be done if people understood that it was the only way, and it would make it more epic to say that a band made a record without ever meeting in person.

I really feel like I need to learn to play guitar now after reading through this post, lol. Although, unlike seemingly the entire tappedout community, I'm not a big fan of metal.
December 17, 2014 12:31 p.m.
No, me either. I was for years but I just got bored of it.

I don't just listen to metal, but with the exception of jazz I find it the most fun to play on guitar. Normally I play jazz or folk influenced metal.
I have a hard time listening to music without guitar, though. I love guitar driven music.

I used to listen to metal mainly too, also because of the guitar parts. If it was fun to play on guitar, I would listen to it because I appreciated the musical skills required to play it. But since I got a job in which I need to drive a lot, I started listening to the radio more and more for diversity, and now I appreciate "main-stream" music too.

I swing the axe!
I currently play a Special Edition Gibson Nighthawk (SUCH A BABE) though either my Spyder 2 75 watt solid state or a sweet little Vox.
I was/is/am a big metal head (Behemoth, Hate Eternal, Dying Fetus, Misery Index, Pig Destroyer, Suffocation, so many others...)
I still listen to a shit ton of metal but I do like my Rap, Classic rock, Alternative, Electrionic music too (Earl Sweatshirt, RZA, GZA, Tokimonsta, Bonobo etc.) all good stuff.
@aeonstoremyliver You ever listen to Mahavishu Orchestra?
And for all the other metal heads on here.
PLEASE! I do encourage you to check out a good friend of mine's band. I seriously challenge you to watch some of their videos. Easily one of the best drummers Edmonton has to offer.
They've only got an EP out. BUT you can download it for free straight off their site!

@Caligula, John McCoughlin (sp?) has some amazing licks. I have one of Mahivishnu Orchestra'a albums on vinyl, Birds of Fire I think it's called. Stellar stuff.
For all the guitfiddle players out there, scope out Friday Night in San Francisco. It's a live album with the aforementioned John McCoughlin, Paco De Lucia, and Al Di Meola. There's a series of YouTube videos as well. Amazing picking with those three. Do note that Paco plays with solely his fingers, no pick.

! I've been listening to Birds of Fire so much lately! Such a good album man.

When i am not listening to Metal... I dabble in old 1940's country, blues, motown, funk, outlaw country, and rap made before 2004 (most things after that kinda blow).
Although, i am a rabid Wu-Tang disciple...

Caligula, i will take you up on that. although, it may have to wait. Internet is very unreliable in the part of Africa that I am in. I am on some SAT shit that I got handed to me before i left. downloads and uploads are not really the type of things that move quickly around here.
Another related note: emails and purchases of eBay from my location come up in error. Apparently, my bank thinks I am some African prince/con-artist. Other than that, the culture is pretty cool.
On an un-related note: Read up on a guy named "general butt naked". Its some warlord dude that actually exists. the story behind him is pretty nuts, and he is still wandering around.
December 19, 2014 5:38 a.m.
What! Just read up on him and damn, he's straight nuts!

ChiefBell, yeah that's the thing. His story isn't funny. It's madness. I am appalled that this joker is still alive, and that the Liberian government pretty much forgave him. Like, the people out here talk about how much of a D-bag he was, but say he is "all better, now".
No, the dude made the Manson Family seem not all that bad.

I play Guitar, I use a Gibson J-160E and a Epiphone Casino, I dabble in playing piano, violin, and vocals. I enjoy most music ranging from classical, jazz, classic rock, modern versions of rock, and on and on. I had a band years ago and recorded a few tracks before the band broke up.

So, mayhap we all can do a massive instrumental track? Per se a predetermined chord progression, time signature, BPM, etc and we can all trade fours.

aeonstoremyliver: I'd be game. We'd have to settle on key, tuning, etc. I've been playing in B standard quite a bit lately, that's my go-to tuning at the moment.

You have truly lived up to your username... lol. Just kidding.
Now I will go back to watching Archer.
And sorry for derailing this thread two days ago-ish.

Gorgosaurusrex Interesting... I like the keys of C/Am, E, and D. Lots of open strings available. DADGAD is one of my flavorite tunings. I also like to switch between major and minor intonation, or play on the major root and relative minor of the key.
