HYDRAS!: The Deck

Yesterday I picked up what may be my most important mana-ramp pieces for my deck: Utopia Sprawl and Arbor Elf.
First game I played with my friend with the new pieces went like this.
T1: Forest, Arbor Elf
T2: Forest, cast Utopia Sprawl on untapped forest. Tap enchanted forest for 2 floating mana, untap using Arbor Elf, tap again for a total of 4 floating mana. Cast Garruk Wildspeaker and use his +1 loyalty ability to untap the enchanted forest (which I tap again for 2 floating mana) and the other forest. I cast Gyre Sage and end my turn.
I already had a Garruk Wildspeaker, Arbor Elf, and a Gyre Sage on turn 2
My opponent's reaction was "Wow, that's scary."
Ended up winning against his Modern Mono-Red Goblins deck
Interested to here what you followed that turn up with? All that mana had to result in something big!

PTsmitty, sadly, I can't remember now! Although I do remember him playing Goblin Fodder and sacking one of his Goblins to Goblin Grenade my Garruk.
I think my play slowed after that, putting only a Forced Adaptation on my Gyre Sage the turn after.

Man, I was hoping you dropped an epic hydra. Definitely one challenge with ramping is getting the big creature to play to go along with it.

Well, I did manage to dish out one of my Kalonian Hydra, not sure about one of my Primordial Hydras

It's a pretty nice setup for mana ramp. Mana ramp decks like that are definitely something that shouldn't be overlooked. If I remembet correctly there was a deck that ran that same engine but used planeswalkers and cloudstone curios as combo and went infinite mana for a kill. Suprisingly quite effective... I wonder where it went.
