Last night I was in the midst of explaining deck archetypes to my wife. She knows very little about the game. This is our conversation:

"So there are three general deck archetypes with a few subtypes. There's Aggro, which is fast and aggressive and likes to win as quickly as possible. Then there's Combo, which likes to win by having two or more cards interact to do something cool. Finally, there's Control, which prevents the other player from doing stuff."

"So, Control sounds like the asshole deck."

"BAHAHAHAHAHAH!!!"

Wut?

And you forgot midrange.

Midrange is a control sub-type

Really? Never thought about it that way. I guess I consider the three types to be Aggro, Midrange, and Control, and Combo fits into them, but I guess you're right.

Yeah, I thought It was aggro, midrange, control also with combo easily fitting into a control or midrange shell and less likley, but possible into an aggro shell

Yeh it's aggro, midrange, and control. They're not defined by win conditions, they're defined by overall deck style / speed / and choices. Combo is just a style of win condition. It's kind of like saying 'burn' is a broad deck archetype. It's not, it's a subtype.

From MagicWiki:

"Most classifications of decks begin from one of three major strategies: aggro, control, and combo. Ramp is another main strategy, however isn't as prominent as the other three. Aggro is most closely related with red and white, control with blue and black, ramp with green, and combo doesn't closely relate to any colours in particular, and generally by the combo pieces used in the deck."

But let us not focus on semantics. My wife is freaking hilarious.

Your wife is great - I'd like more of the above.

And I'm allowed to disagree with Magic Wiki.

Lol.

Well, there are 'errors with this page.'
