I am pretty sure this has been a post many times but I'm curious what people say. What's the most annoying thing people can do while playing you, or that you notice while watching people play? For me, I can't stand when people shuffle their deck from the side like a deck of cards and don't bridge it. It leaves the cards with the front of them bent facing out and I can't stand that.
JakeHarlow says... #3
I know, right?? People spend tons of money on things they don't need, like decorative furniture or art. Those things are fine too, but being judged for dropping hundreds on a deck is completely silly. This is a hobby of mine; I will spend my money on it if I like.

JakeHarlow ThisIsBullshit Completely agree, I absolutely hate that. This is pretty much my only hobby I have to spend any money on, so let me spend it as I will.

when people roughly flip through my trade binder. its like dude you dont have to slap back every page at 20 mph to go to the next page. especially when i have valuable stuff in those pages and i dont want my binder to get damaged. Along with that, i dont like when people just start ripping cards out of my binder. atleast ask if its for trade first because some of my valuables are kept in my binder for future use and to keep them protected.
also when people are just overly confident at the start of a match. example was a couple fnm's ago this dude playing Mono black devotion was matched against me (i was playing gruul monsters) and he was like 'ohhh i know what youre playing, i like my odds. I then proceeded to shit on him 2-0 and he complained about each loss both times ( if only i didnt draw all these lands, i didnt draw anything good etc..). Like dude, you lost, get over it! everyone loses from time to time, dont have to make excuses.
October 5, 2014 5:57 p.m.
I guarantee that half the people who complain about other peoples attitudes are guilty of those things themselves. That said, I really don't like when people explain why my deck is bad and then tell me about how their janky home brew is better. Really annoying.

Nomp: I'm sure we're all guilty of being sour about the outcome of a game every once in a while, but maintenance of manners and gracious losing (and winning) is the mark of a good sportsman. If I'm complaining that others hold themselves to lower standards, I can assure you it is with good reason. I can only speak for myself, though.
magic_monicle: I can't believe how people treat your binder. That's outrageous. If I have my binder out, people aren't allowed to pull cards out. They can point out items they'd like and then I will remove them if needed. There's also no reason at all to flip pages with excessive force. Binders and the pages for them aren't cheap. It's a shame that some people have no respect for the belongings of others. I have sympathy for you bro.

I really don't like it when people get ridiculously upset due to mana screw. It's a part of the game. It happens to everybody. Slamming the table and throwing a fit won't change your deck's arrangement and allow you to draw the land you need.
I had someone get way too upset over this last week. He got stuck on two lands and would say something like "I hope you like how my deck is winning the game for you!" every turn. I show no sympathy for people with that sort of attitude. Shit happens. Get over it. I don't understand how people allow themselves to get angry over bad luck in a card game.

As a younger player, I hate when people have this look on their face, like they've already won the match. And when I kick there ass, they gather there stuff and, storm off huffing.

I have a couple
1) I seem to attract this one a lot. I always play homebrews that are not always competitive, and I accept the consequences if they lose games and I learn from those mistakes and tweak the deck as necessary. But there's always one person who legitimately gets mad and patronizes me because they don't like the deck and then they proceed to tell me how to make it correctly...and it's a netdeck. I get it: netdecks are proven winners, but if I wanted to make a netdeck, then I'd make a freakin' netdeck.
2) This one is a jab at me. When I play blue and I counter someone's spell, I can't help this stupid little smirk from forming on my face and it feels really unsportsmanlike. I've actually even stopped playing blue as much because I hate feeling like an asshole every time I counter someone's spell...it didn't use to be like this!

I mean, counterspells are for smiling! Just don't be a total deck about it. It's totally cool to flash a grin when you make a nice play. It's more about not being a dick about it when you do.

I usually apologize when I play a counterspell because of the smile lol I just feel like such a dick about it. I think the only times actually I don't feel bad about it is when I win a counterspell war

October 22, 2014 3:03 a.m.
i am very sadly used to touching other people's cards when playing with them, because most of my friends used to not run counter spells to prevent my kill spells and at the time, I was like 9. I will not go to a fnm until I have this bad habit under control though, and I am working very hard to stop.
Ironically, One of my pet peeves Is when I show one of my expensive cards to one of my friends, and without asking, they just grab it out of my hand! Like at one point, I showed Linvala to someone, and they grabbed it out of my hand, and I was so close to just... I have no idea. It was extremely frustrating! I mean, that's $50 bucks your holding!
Another one is when someone scrapes there unsleeved cards of the table. You can see the damage! It is so sad.

I absolutely hate when people bridge-shuffle their decks, especially when they're using fairly expensive yet unsleeved cards. It literally makes me grit my teeth.
October 23, 2014 8:50 p.m.
ThisIsBullshit says... #21
CastleSiege OMG right?!? I don't particularly like bridge shuffling to begin with because it can bend cards if not done carefully, but there are a couple of guys in my playgroup that play unsleeved cards and always bridge shuffle and bend their cards. I've tried to tell them that's bad for their cards but they don't listen and I just silently fume in my corner and feel bad for the cards.
October 23, 2014 8:54 p.m.
CastleSiege says... #22
I don't see the point in spending so much money on cards if you're just going to ruin them >_< I'm wicked anal when it comes to keeping my cards in pristine condition. I'm the only one at my local shop who double sleeves their commander decks xD
Another thing that bothers me is the smell of people at the pre-releases that take place at the shop I go to. Not only are there some people who just reek of B.O. (I get it, it's a small building, there's lots of people, it gets hot from all the body heat. People are going to sweat), but there's always this one group of like 7 guys who come in smelling strongly of weed. I'm not against pot or anything, but I personally hate the smell of it, it makes me feel sick. When I go to the midnight pre-releases I don't need their smell of weed making me sick on top of being hot and over tired ._. The morning after the Born of the Gods prerelease I felt so sick that I vomited.
October 23, 2014 9:11 p.m.
ThisIsBullshit says... #23
Yeah I'm the only one in my playgroup who actually seems to care about what sleeves I use and although I haven't double sleeved yet, it's gonna happen sometime soon lol.
Those guys do kinda suck like seriously dude take a shower it's not that hard.
October 23, 2014 9:13 p.m.
JakeHarlow says... #24
I gotta say I agree, guys. Bathe, please. For God's sakes, you folks are in public!
I also double sleeve all my cards, and am neurotically meticulous when it comes to the care for them. I don't let people bridge shuffle my stuff. And watching people engage in unsleeved play makes my skin crawl! I known that it isn't my property and thus I've no right to feel any way about it, but it does trigger me.
October 23, 2014 11:24 p.m.
I hate when people shuffle my deck to 'cut' it, and leave half the sleaves facing one way, and the other half the other way.
October 24, 2014 1:37 a.m.
ThisIsBullshit says... #26
nayrash5 that annoys me to no end. Besides, if they shuffle and leave half the deck one way and the other half the other way, it can damage the sleeves, at least in my experience it has.
October 24, 2014 12:25 p.m.
aeonstoremyliver says... #27
Actually, shuffle cutting is very legal and how it must be done at uber competitive levels...
I'm with you on bridging U sleeved cards. I've played with a dude in Legacy who doesn't use sleeves and had multiple copies of ABUR duals, Force of Will , Wasteland , etc. And bridge shuffled. I cringed.

ThisIsBullshit says... #28
aeonstoremyliver I literally just winced. How do you deal with that?
October 24, 2014 9:45 p.m.
Not much pisses me off more than somebody tapping on the top of my deck when I offer them a cut.
November 4, 2014 10:57 a.m.
Gorgosaurusrex says... #31
naynay666: That bugs you? At FNM level I don't find it necessary to cut every time my opponent cracks a fetch, especially if we are short on time. What would you have them do instead if they don't want to cut?
November 4, 2014 11:23 a.m.
JakeHarlow says... #32
I think it's the tapping. It's just stupid. Don't be frivolous with an opponent's property.
November 4, 2014 12:05 p.m.
ThisIsBullshit says... #33
How is that frivolous with an opponent's property? What's so bad about it?
November 4, 2014 12:08 p.m.
JakeHarlow says... #34
I'm not sure what he meant by tapping, but I'm assuming it's when people rap or knock the top of a deck while hoping for a good top-deck. So when an opponent does that to your deck, it seems like a cheeky way of saying, "Please draw shitty." Comes off as rude.
The other possibility is that they tap it to notify you that you need to pass your deck over for them to cut/shuffle. In that case, it just seems like the ruder alternative to verbally asking, "Hey, could you pass your deck so I can cut it?"
Finally, it ultimately represents a lack of courtesy and respect for the deck's owner. I'm sure many people who do it don't mean anything by it, but it can still rub people the wrong way. Just cut the deck or shuffle it. Don't pat it, stroke it, tap it, or anything else that you're not actually required to do. That's my view, anyway. I realize that there are other valid opinions of course.
November 4, 2014 12:17 p.m.
Gorgosaurusrex says... #35
I only tap an opponent's deck when they present it for a cut and I do not wish to cut. To me it's a lot quicker than actually telling my opponent that I do not wish to cut, and I only do it against opponents that shuffle their decks very frequently (Maze's End , etc).
If my opponent reached across the table and tapped or touched my deck in the middle of my turn I would not be pleased. But if I present my deck for a cut and my opponent taps instead of cutting I see no harm done. I guess I thought it was normal play etiquette.
November 4, 2014 1:03 p.m.
ThisIsBullshit says... #36
Yeah I thought it was just the normal thing to do if you didn't want to cut
November 4, 2014 1:11 p.m.
JakeHarlow says... #37
I didn't realize this. I suppose this is perfectly acceptable given the circumstances. Usually I just shake my head or say, "No worries, you're good," if I decline to cut or shuffle. But tapping on the deck in these circumstances seems totally fine, especially if it's considered a normal practice, like knocking a table to represent a check during a poker game. I apologize for my ignorance.

One thing that annoys the shit out of me is a lot of kids I know use dice on their 'walkers, but don't represent the current loyalty. For example, if they play Jace, Architect of Thought and immediately +1, they put a D6 on him rolled to "1" instead of 5. I honestly don't even understand how they think this works. You're probably wondering "what do they do if the loyalty is below the printed value?" Well, they just take off the die and expect you to know what it's loyalty is. I know it's against the rules what with maintaining the board state, but I'm not gonna call a judge over to DQ some scrubs. It's so frustrating that no matter how frequently I tell them the proper way to keep track they never do >.>
November 4, 2014 2:38 p.m.
@Jp3ngu1nb0y: That reminds me of people who use dice to keep track of power/toughness on creatures...in their deck that uses +1/+1 counters. They'll play something like Crusade and then put dice on all their creatures. Then, they'll cast something like Ajani, Caller of the Pride or Gavony Township and move the dice up by another value.
It especially bothers me when playing in older formats, where mechanics like Infect are present.
I'm fine if you want to use dice to keep track of all your anthems, Tarmogoyf s, yada yada. But use a different system/different colored dice if you have +1/+1 counters.
November 4, 2014 3:15 p.m.
ThisIsBullshit says... #40
sylvannos how would you prefer them to keep track of +1/+1 counters? What's wrong with using dice for counters? I didn't think it was that big of a deal.
November 4, 2014 3:20 p.m.
I think dice work for P/T or tokens. Mixing them can make for difficult-to-understand boardstates if an anthem gets removed, something is flickered, -1/-1 counters are added, etc. If both modifiers are present, use dice and game stones or something.
November 4, 2014 3:36 p.m.
@ThisIsBullshit: No no no...the dice as +1/+1 counters don't bother me. That's actually one of the best ways to do it.
I'm talking about when someone plays something like Glorious Anthem or Boar Umbra , then puts dice on their creature to represent the power/toughness bonus from that enchantment/artifact/whatever. Then, they play cards that put actual +1/+1 counters on their creatures and end up mixing the two.
So, the person may have a dice set to three, but only a single +1/+1 counter is actually present. It's confusing and always leads to mixups and confusion, especially when the enchantment or whatever gets destroyed.
"Uhh...so...how many +1/+1 counters did I have on this guy?"
November 4, 2014 4:14 p.m.
Gorgosaurusrex says... #43
I've found the best way to teach new players how to properly maintain board state is to have a judge come over and show them. Having the die read 1 when Jace, Architect of Thought has 5 loyalty can cause play mistakes by both players.
There was a guy at my shop who would put the die on his creature equal to that creature's power plus the number of +1/+1 counters on it. I kept asking him to simply put it equal to the number of +1/+1 counters to avoid confusion but he didn't want to do the simple math needed to calculate the creature's power more then once. A visit from the judge helped him avoid confusing game states.

Wolfsbane706 says... #44
Something I don't like is when players criticize you for not having enough money to make a competitive deck. I don't remember if it's happened to me or not, but two of my own decks are unsleeved simply because I can't afford decent sleeves.
November 4, 2014 4:33 p.m.
ThisIsBullshit says... #45
sylvannos ah I gotcha now. That actually is pretty annoying not gonna lie.
Wolfsbane706 that happens to me whenever I play a proxied card and get shit for it. It's like "welp sorry I can't afford thirty dollar cards" idk it just kinda makes me mad.
November 4, 2014 5:48 p.m.
Another thing that annoys me is when people say I only won cuz I had better cards, and if they could afford good cards they would've won.
Bitch, the only money I spend on magic is entering fnm, and I get these cards from playing well and winning. Not only that, but I play with wack-ass decks anyway. I'm a good player, I win off of that and get better cards.
November 4, 2014 7:39 p.m.
@Jp3ngu1nb0y: I've only encountered that once where the guy got all irritated over my deck's value.
I've traded for and won all of my high-end cards (Zendikar fetches, Mana Crypt ). Or, I've had them for a long time (Force of Will , Wasteland ). The worst was when some kids were badmouthing one of our younger, better players. They went on about "His parents just give him money."
The truth is he borrowed his friend's Jund deck and won multiple $100 cash tournaments and bought his own Jund deck. He then played that deck for as long as it was in Standard. He always had around $300 store credit he would use to pay for his entry fees. Essentially, he never spent a dime of his parent's money or his own. His entire deck was something he won.
Budget can be a real impediment for a lot of people. But that's why you play the best deck available to your budget in formats you're good at. I played Maze's End exclusively to the point I was able to trade for Sphinx's Revelation s to play U/W Control. I turned about $20 into multiple Modern decks with fetch lands, Dark Confidant s, etc.
Not saying this is an option for everyone. However, you really shouldn't judge people based on how valuable their deck is. It's often an excuse to play poorly.
November 4, 2014 8:21 p.m.
JakeHarlow says... #48
Yeah, it's just jealousy is all. People get jealous and also, like sylvannos just mentioned, whine about their lack of success and blame it on the fact that the opponent's deck costs more. It's childish but people do it.

I forgot this one but one of the worst is when people who don't play Magic get all condescending like "Dude what is wrong with you why would you spend five hundred dollars on a deck". It's my money, I spend it how I want.
