Hello, I have never attended FNM before. Can anyone explain what I could do if I was not participating in the main event (such as a draft)? Any suggestions for what I should do when I go for the first time?

The main event is often the only thing happening at FNM. Call ahead to find out what else usually goes on at the location you plan on attending.
If there's nothing else planned at the location and you don't want to enroll in the main event then you'll basically be in charge of your own experience. You'll have to find opportunities to play, trade, etc. with other people who are either also just hanging out (like you) or in-between rounds of the main event.

A lot of stores run casual nights for EDH or whatever you feel like, that may be more your speed.

My LGS, lately, has been offering Standard as well as Draft for FNM. They're also doing this new thing called Draftism, I haven't checked it out yet, but from my understanding its just drafting from previous synergistic sets. I believe they're doing Lorwyn block and something else this weekend, but it has been firing every night. I don't know how many other stores are doing that, but it may be another option.

My store always does standard as FnM but also will run commander tournament alongside the standard if enough people are present. Also on the first week of a new set they run a draft of the new set for FnM . Mon nights is draft and wed is modern

If the main event that night is a draft, you don't have to draft. You can always go to FNM and build your decks or play casually with friends. The last time I went to standard night, me and my friends played EDH in a corner of the shop after I finished building my standard deck.
