40 Promos: The Art
Spoilers, Rumors, and Speculation forum

So with the realization that there will be 40 different promo cards, I also came to wonder if each of those cards would have an alternate art? I really believe that that would be cool but I am just not sure if that is possible. What do you think? Could wizards do it? As a side note. Those would be a bitch to collect...

No, I mean can/will they have alternate promo arts for every single one of the 40 prerelease rares. It seems like kind of a pain in the ass, so will they do it. that's like an alternate art card for every rare in the set...

Yes, it was just confirmed by my uncle, Rose Watermarks, that there will in fact be alternate art for every promo in the set. I'm also getting word that every card in the set and every set incoming will also feature alternate art, like they did in the old days.

.... Haha..... wait was that last litte tidbit serious? Were there actually alt arts for all old sets for all cards?
September 14, 2014 8:42 p.m.
Servo_Token says... #11
Yep. I think Fallen Empires was the biggest set to have them, but I wasn't playing then so don't take my word on it.
Goblin Grenade and Hymn to Tourach are two of the most commonly played cards (that I have in recent memory seen) that have a bunch of arts from the same set.

Hmm... very interesting. I wonder why that is. It would probally bit of amoney sink to do that.
Did nobody else wonder this also? Am i a Storm Crow on an Island

I doubt the khans will have alternate arts, but if they do, they will be worth infinite dollars to edh players.
September 14, 2014 9:03 p.m.
Maro already said that each prerelease promo will have alt art and the prerelease stamp. People need to listen more.

The khans aren't the promos though. They can be the only mythic in your seeded pack, just like the guild leader could be the only mythic in your RTR seeded pack.
September 14, 2014 9:21 p.m.
The Khans can be your promos. There are 40 total promo cards, 8 for each clan, and 5 of those cards are the Khans. The Khans will have altered art and release stamps on them. Nothing I've seen has said otherwise.
September 14, 2014 9:35 p.m.
there are 8 rares in each clan, those will prob be the promos.
September 14, 2014 10:07 p.m.
I know I remember hearing/reading, somewhere Mark Rosewater say that there would be a pre-release date stamped on each of the promo cards and they would be foil, whether or not he said there was going to be and alternate are for each on I do not remember. It seems logical that they would since they normally do alternate arts for the promos and they're going to foil and date them like normal. It's only commissioning another 40 arts, which for them (in comparison to a whole set) isn't really much of a hassle.
September 14, 2014 10:08 p.m.
If that is correct, then the Khans will not be available as a promo.
September 14, 2014 10:09 p.m.
This does sound good for sure. Even if all of the promos aren't different art, I think it is pretty cool that there can be that much more variability in this prerelease

The Khans will be one of the 8 promos available in your colors. When you get your seeded booster pack your promo will be 1 of 8 cards. The khans are one of the 8 available but only of the color you chose. He also said in a video I saw that your seeded pack will contain your colors. He didn't get into depth on it or even stress it in anyway so it could have been a slip of the tongue and they'll only be heavy in our colors like the previous ones, but, I'm hoping it's true that the seeded booster will be only your colors because with all of the mana fixing in the set it'll make 3 colors really playable in sealed.

If this is true and given the record card sales of MTG and pre-release attendance of recent I would say the market will flood with these arts and they will drive the price down on the khans. You will be able to buy a playset for 10 bucks alt art. I wouldn't let mine go but i'm a gatherer. There have been many sets where the alt art foil promo is cheaper to buy at your LGS or online than even a non-foil regular issue. Ive always had an issue with even FNM promos being undervalued when you have to win 1st or 2nd place at FNM or get the random draw just to attain one. A month later that card cant be won anymore. You would think if only 12 to 14 FNM promos get issued per LGS per promo they would be limited and valuable but the market devalues them instead. Just wonder why, i'd rather show off alt art promos and keep em. Hope they do swag it up though.
September 15, 2014 12:48 a.m.
One thing to remember is the promos won't quite be as available in bulk as they have been when they did just 5, one for each color. With 8 different promos for each clan, even if one clan gets opened far more than the rest they won't all have the same promo card so there will inherently be fewer available and might make the good promos actually worth more than a bulk promo that was mass produced for a pre-release.
September 15, 2014 3:39 a.m.
looks like there's not promo-art for all 40. https://www.facebook.com/MagicTheGathering opened a prerelease pack, and Temur Ascendancy had the same art, albeit foil, as the visual spoiler.
September 15, 2014 1:20 p.m.
So, we only get one rare in the seeded packs now?

Plot twist, the alternate art versions were the spoiled ones, and the original art is now the altered art...

well all the promos are just rejected art, so there might be at least a good reject from each of them. the bigger question, what are the promos?
September 15, 2014 7:46 p.m.
That is the question. The good promos should actually have a little value now. It's not an alternate are but there should be fewer of them than the regular foils with the random 1 of 8 for each clan.

There are 8 rares per clan; I'd be shocked if those weren't the 40 promos.
September 17, 2014 7:33 a.m.
well then be shocked lol... because one of the 8 you can get for sure is the Khan of your clans colors, which is a mythic rare. So that right there tells you that the 8 rares won't be the 8 promos.
September 17, 2014 10:23 a.m.
Well we have a few rare cycles for each clan: Khan, Ascendancy, 5-drop, and 6-drop morph: so that's half of the likely promos. There are a few more watermarked rares, like Siege Rhino , Mantis Rider , Kheru Lich Lord , Butcher of the Horde , and Savage Knuckleblade . Then there are the rare 3-color clan instant/sorceries. It's the monocolors that seem more difficult to predict for promo-placement.

Sorry, I assumed that it was obvious that by 'rare' I meant 'rare or mythic'. I still expect it to be from amongst those. sigh
September 17, 2014 4:47 p.m.
Well of course it's going to be from among them, you named every rare in the set with the exception of like 5. Those 5 that you didn't name aren't going to make up all of the promos. Also it wasn't obvious you meant rare or mythic rare because you didn't really mean rare or mythic rare. If you did then that would mean you can't count because there is more than 8 rare/mythics for each clan. There is however 8 rares, which is what you were referring to, you were just wrong in assuming those 8 would be the promos. It's ok, really, there's no reason to be so ashamed by it that you try and make excuses. lol

pskinn01 The only problem I see with the 8 rares being the promos, is that then there will be 2 different promo arts for the intro deck rares and Rattleclaw Mystic .
September 17, 2014 6:34 p.m.
From the video that someone else linked to, showed there wasnt alternate art for the promos. Or the leaked art was the promo.
September 17, 2014 7:40 p.m.
It only showed Temur Ascendancy though, so some of them could have promo art. This art is the normal art, you can tell because it doesn't say "Prerelease" (or any other promo type) next to the card number, as the promos have had since M15.
TheRedDude Yeah, it's from a video of someone opening a Temur prerelease box. The link to the facebook page with the video is on page 2 of this thread.

All the ascendency's are confirmed promos, and one of MtgLion's videos show a Dragon-Style Twins , which could be a promo. I believe it is.
September 19, 2014 7:55 p.m.
I just watched MTGLion open some Prerelease kits, and it doesn't look like any of the promos will have alternate art. At least not from the 10 he got, one being Sidisi.
