I just realized that there is some new art in the spoilers, most prominent in
http://www.magicspoiler.com/mtg-spoiler/valor-in-akros/.
Anyone have any idea if this is where the art is headed?
For each block the art director chooses artists they feel best encapsulate that style. For Origins it appears they are going for a more CGI style, which is completely within Wizards rights. I doubt that all art will be CGI from now on, since some popular artists still use traditional methods.

Eh, depends. I think that if wizards likes this art style then we will see it more often, as I asked. Anyone know where this is headed?

I just told you that the art will vary between CGI and traditional. Go here about halfway down where they talk about how the art changes from block to block.

That's so cool that the FRF basics are the ancient versions of the land from KTK and DTK. Now I want to collect all the Khans block basics.

The cg art style looks terrible. All the pictures on the boosters depicting the plainswakers look like they are from a children's mtg show like beast wars.
Stay away from cg wizards! I like traditional art!

I guess it depends on the available artists, the methods they use and public opinion.
Wizards won't just do something "because they want to", they listen to the player base quite frequently and try to do the best for all players. If there was a big consensus saying "the new art is bad" they would try to fix that.
A lot of people I speak to like the new art as it allows for crisper, more defined images. Just because an artist does a traditional piece for a card also doesn't mean they can't hand it over to a graphics guy to increase the level of detail and crispness to allow for a higher quality image overall.
Wizards are going to do what they think is best overall for the game. When it comes to art that comes down to if the community enjoys and appreciates it, which I think most people do as the higher quality images allow us to see more clearly into the world being depicted. However each set does seem to have its own style of art, so the CG thing in Origins may not be present in BFZ as they want to reflect the artwork originally shown there.

I noticed a similar thing. If you just look on the page here a similar CGI art style was being used.
