Your Infinity War references may begin

cdkime I am assuming the lack of a pluralization could signify many, many things. For example, if Nicol Bolas was the only one fighting on his side, then it would be his spark that is referenced, or it could be a double meaning with spark referring to an single event that sparks the war, etc.
I am assumng a lot of walkers will be roaming about in this set, but I would doubt that everyone has them, because they are a mystic, so unless a Dominaria style sswitch to how you open packs happens, not many players will get mythics.

It's totally a crossover set between the Transformers CCG and Magic. ;)

SynergyBuild - While every past planeswalker has been printed at Rare (barring those in Lorwyn, which predate Mythic Rare), that does not preclude Wizards from making walkers at different rarities in a future set. If Wizards wanted to heavily push planeswalkers, there is nothing to stop them from printing a number of rare planeswalkers (or common for that matter, but I think that would get old pretty quickly).
I don't expect that to happen, and think a large influx of new walkers could be problematic for Standard, and might get old pretty quickly in Limited. However, I will also not be surprised if this set is a planeswalkers matter set, as we have seen with all other permanent types.

I'm guessing that war of the spark may refer to Azor's spark, inside The Immortal Sun? Anyone else get those vibes?
January 10, 2019 2:48 p.m.
When you pull your clothes outta the dryer in the dark, they create a spark. Planeswalker laundry! I always lose my left socks.
What if there is a special spark that can be "granted" to a guild instead of an individual? And each guild has to prove itself worthy of said special spark? Now I don't follow the lore a whole lot and I could be way out in left field with this but...ya never know.
Play Mirage Mirror more.

It would be interesting if they printed all the planeswalkers as simply legendary creatures due to Bolas' machinations and the effects of the immortal sun. Bolas maybe trying to steal their sparks to fuel his ascendance back to godhood. Oooo maybe a type of flip-card.

I personally do not believe that any of the planeswalkers, apart from Dovin, shall remain loyal to Bolas; Domri is too wild and chaotic to be loyal to anyone but himself, Ral does not yet realize that he is being manipulated, and will not be happy when he learns that he is, Kaya has a sense of honor, and likely will not agree with Bolas's plans, and Vraska will almost certainly defect when Jace restores her memory. Dovin, however, is found of authority and control, as is Bolas, so they are natural allies, at least until one almost certainly attempts to betray the other.
I also believe that Liliana will turn against Bolas at a critical moment, enabling the heroes to emerge victorious, but likely at the cost of her life.

Dovin's Acquity's flavor text hints at an Anti-Gatewatch League or Legion of Bolas or something. The Gatewatch hasn't had any cards in a few sets, they should come back somehow and battle them in this next set. Also a bunch of Kaladesh artifacts and Amonkhet zombies should show up from Tezzeret and Bolas. I'm super psyched.

I'm guessing they're not gonna try to push walkers more (hopefully not) but I could see something like Bolas handing out Sparks using some new ability like an inverse of the immortal sun as "salvation" from the destruction of Ravnica.
Also, totally believable that it would be a Justice League vs the Legion of Doom situation.

Rzepkanut - I think the most notable part of that flavour text is not what it says, but what it does not. Liliana is also on Ravnica, but Bolas seems to be keeping her allegiance a closely guarded secret.
Further, Tezzeret not being mentioned is curious. I suspect this means Tezzeret is not on Ravnica, and thus might escape whatever fate befalls Bolas. He is a pretty popular bad guy, so it makes sense to keep him readily available.

cdkime - probably no-one besides bolas and the GW knows about Lili's situation. I think that Dovin is only listing the planeswalkers currently on Ravnica as guild leaders and adds Bolas, implying he is on the level of a guild leader or an 11th guild all by himself.
I really hope Bolas survives this, as he is a good Magic villain, though that will mark his 5th failure, if I am counting right. And even if he dies, that has not stopped him before.

Errata: the watch doesn't know about Lili's deal either.

Quick aside, why did they release it now. When they said they wouldn’t release the set name with the others, a lot of people presumed it would be for Eldritch Moon reasons (tells to much).
This isn’t anything like that. Most people knew, and Wizards may have even confirmed, that a super-battle for Ravnica centered around Bolas was going to happen in the next set. Maybe the set symbol gives something away, but they could have given us the name anytime, and not give anything away.
Also, this was released at the end of previews from the last set. They didn’t even let people admire the set they just previewed, and haven’t even released yet. It feels rushed, just like so many other things this (past) year.
Overall, really interesting name, but questionable release of this information

Can't help wondering whether spark (singular) refers to some sort of Mending v2 and related to all the sparks being E Pluribus Unum.
Also wonder whether we'd get some sort of "half-planewalkers" or "planeswalker ascendants" or something, being a simple, lite implementation of Loyalty abilities on normal creatures (e.g. +1 for a puny ability)? Would avoid them having to flood the game with full planeswalkers, while keeping the flavour.

So correct me if I’m wrong but isn’t karn tagging along with them. Karn who (again correct me if I’m wrong) has Urza’s spark, one of the most powerful. If the Imortal sun can back him into a corner then bolas can take control of it and then have three old sparks in his possession. Azor, Karn and himself, and as may fantasy tropes go you need three of something to make it more powerful.

I thought karn lost urza's spark and was why he was trapped on new phyrexia until venser gave him his spark.

Slight correction, it is listed as War of the Spark. The lack of plural might have some significance.
Nothing all that exciting there, it basically is just affirming what we already know what would be happening.
I am curious if this is going to be a set that heavily focuses on Planeswalkers, and has more than the smattering we usually receive. I am not a fan of planeswalkers as a card type, but it would be kind of fun and different to play a Prerelease where everyone has walkers running about.
