In light of recent leaks of Koz and Wastes I figured it was worth showing this new article to people who don't normally check this kind of thing.

I think it's funny. It wasn't even that big of a leak. It's the same as someone posting a leak every other day for a couple months before actual spoilers -- this time it was just all at once. I don't think it's right and I don't condone the behavior, but the reactions of the MtG community over this is truly hysterical.

Although the article mainly mentions the 'colorless mana', I think the article's release is largely due to the fact that 9 out of 10 Mythics are already spoiled/leaked. - They couldn't mention the Mythics because (as mentioned in the article), the do not comment on leaked cards.

Since their plan about showing the world their newest set was spoiled by a party pooper, they put extensive work into 'ranting' about leaks... Within their ranks a storm is raging, causing this article to crack through the crust.I can understand their feelings, which resulted in this article. But strictly taken from a business perspective this will only fuel the discussion and 'endorse' future leaks... poor judgement...

PartyJ

Wizards releases many of their 'spoilers' to third-parties as a way to 'support' those in the magic community for their furthered endorsement.

When these leaks occur these parties do not benefit from the draw to their sites which the spoilers bring. - As such, it is harmful to others in the Magic community as well.

Also, if these third-parties have no article to run, they may end up running articles on non-magic topics. - Possibly even competing products. - Additional (though admittedly, likely small) negative effects for Wizards.

Spoilers are a huge source of advertising for Magic, and 'stealing' their thunder for your own site is the same as shooting them in the foot... they'll probably live, but "Damn, it's painful!"

Sure, it brings about 'additional discussion', but its 'additional discussion hosted by non-Wizards affiliated sites'.

I feel the article was an appropriate and well-worded 'warning' that they will take action to protect their intellectual property.

I feel the article was an appropriate and well-worded 'warning' that they will take action to protect their intellectual property.

Breaking the usual stance on how to (not) react into the public world still feels like a useless move. I believe they would do a better job at putting this energy into initiating (counter)measures to avoid leaks like this in the future. A well-worded warning never stopped any form of crime, but serious actions do! Most people will find this article informative and/or amusing.... which kinda misses the obvious purpose of the article.

"A well-worded warning never stopped any form of crime"...?

Really? - It's actually quite a deterrent for those who don't realize that what they are doing is a crime.

Even a simple 'Trespassers will be prosecuted' sign is enough of a message to let people know they have stumbled onto someone else's property.

Sure, if one knows they are doing wrong and still has intentions of continuing, the message will probably be lost. - But that is often not the case, especially with 'intellectual property' laws.

PartyJ, how long do you even think it took them to write this article? i highly doubt it took away a noticeable amount of effort from finding the leakers. Also, the guy knows that not everyone will take the article seriously. That was the gist of the last few sentences

I found it to be quite amusing, almost like a tantrum. Although I am very happy the expeditions were leaked. I dropped my case order because, well I don't want to chance opening one of the terrible expeditions, and without the expedition lottery opening packs is usually pretty bad overall (the last year was an awesome exception, but reality set back in with ORI and BFZ). So I guess in a way, the leak caused Wizards to lose my sale.

Leak was done from the inside. Maybe if WotC didn't treat their employees like shit they wouldn't need to deal with the leaks

How does WotC treat its employees like shit? I know the artists r extremely underpaid for their work.

Apparently they've actually improved over the past couple years. Several years ago everyone not in R&D had extremely low pay, poor health insurance, and few benefits. The level of micromanaging and the tyranny of middle management were also very bad.
