Atarka, World Render (R/G Legendary Dragon)

Here it is, in all of it's disappointment....

Flying Trample

whenever a dragon you control attacks, it gains double strike until end of turn

6/4

I don't like it at all. The ability doesn't stack the way it does for the other dragons, it costs too much, and the 4 toughness means it is going to die to Stoke the Flames where the other dragons wouldn't. Am I missing anything? Let me know how you guys feel about this

EmblemMan says... #2

I dont really like any of the dragon and this is one no different

slovakattack says... #3

It does stack, though, as each dragon gains the ability.

January 6, 2015 11:59 a.m.

Each dragon attacking will gain double strike, yes, but it isn't like Dromoka, the Eternal, which will bolster 2 for each attacking dragon. or Kolaghan, the Storm's Fury, which gives +1/0 for each dragon attacking

This dragon beats Hornet Queen. That's not insignificant.

However it also dies to Stoke the Flames that's not insignificant either.

7/10 for having the potential to rule the skies but loses 3 for 4 toughness putting into red removal range. It's very, very strong, but has deep flaws.

Also this, mana dorks, and Xenagos, God of Revels. That 24 damage on T5.

January 6, 2015 12:05 p.m.

ChiefBell: I agree that he has potential, but I really don't like that he is in range of one of the most commonly played removal spells right now.

This dragon also plays nicely with stormbreath. I can see a deck that runs this guy, stormbreath, sarkhan as its main creatures with generator servant and mana ramp. Then instead of playing burn spells just run counter magic, Stubborn denial is an auto counter for any spell for 1 mana once any of these cards are out. What else can beat them in the sky? especiall if you did manage to have xenagos god out.

I don't think anyone does haha. But she's one of those threats that has to be answered or you lose. Every time she swings you run the risk of losing 60% of your life unless you answer her. You're also in red which has access to haste. She's no pushover. There is a difference between bad cards that are easily answerable and good cards that must be answered or you lose. The fact that she has to be answered or basically wins the game takes her 6 out of 10, to 7 , for me.

I'm a fan actually. The U/B I think will be the most relevant with Jeskai tokens being a thing, but trample and double strike is a real thing too. He crushes all other fliers in the format, I'm ok with him being weak to stoke considering if they don't have an answer he's going to steamroll at least once. Combine him with a Stormbreath Dragon that you should be running with him and damn...

January 6, 2015 12:13 p.m.

I don't think the u/b dragon will be great against tokens. It is 6 mana, you should be dead by then or you are winning anyway.

I guess im being a bit harsh on this dragon, but I personally am a control player, and I like resilient creatures. I don't normally play midrange strategies that involve playing a lot of "answer or die" type of cards

I think she'd be a little too good if she couldn't be stoked, as quickly as she can end a game once she swings. Ramp into her and give her haste in some decks and she ends games super fast.

And hey, if nothing else I'll stick her into my Prossh EDH deck. He could use double-strike coming from a card that can toss out tons of damage on its own in a pinch.

Flying Trample 12/4.

I'm with ChiefBell on this one... It has potential

I think in edh this guy will be decent due to double strike especially in Scion of the Ur-Dragon builds but in standard 7 mana is too much anyways...

ChiefBell says... #14

You realise in gruul this is easily T5 castable right? And can come out with haste right? And Hornet Queen is seeing heavy play and costs 7 mana too?

Hickorysbane says... #15

I think it'll see standard play. Of course there are things that deal with it rather easily. But if they hold Stoke for him they're not shooting down another dragon or your life total. If it was unanswerable it'd be / and be a control finisher like AEtherling. As it is now it's a midrange threat that I think will see play. Standard is pretty midrange right now. A cmc of 7 shouldn't hold back something like this, and especially not with a little ramp.

And outside of Standard...I'm kinda terrified to see this in my friends Karthus deck.

I'm stoked (see what I did there? :P)to get one of these and put it straight into my Prossh EDH deck. Re-occuring double strike is perfect.

January 6, 2015 1 p.m.

She's a beast. If she didn't die to Stoke the Flames or Sarkhan, the Dragonspeaker she would probably be too powerful. As is it definitely gives R/G the tools to hang with other midrange decks late in the game.

ZooGambler says... #18

Yeah she needed to be able to be stoked otherwise red would be dead in the water to this. Flying Trample Double Strike is pretty intense, Gruul will probably see some play to test this dragon out. Hasty double strike stormbreath just seems sweet. This guy is a must answer and my favorite/strongest dragon of all of them in my opinion.

I really was hoping to have the UW dragon be a little stronger as a finisher than a staller, but the art makes up for some of that. As does Reality Shift. Damn that card will be going in my deck so fast.

fucking epic for my Karrthus deck, and any other dragon deck tbh! :-)

I think it is the best dragon of the set so far, definitely a game ender if left alone

Ultimaodin says... #21

You realise that Atarka, World Render actually just straight up eats all the other dragons with the exception of Dromoka if Dromoka happens to be your only creature.Don't get me wrong, Dromoka is probably the strongest of them all but Atarka is a legitimate win condition by itself. Your opponent needs removal to this or they just flat die. The 4 toughness is clearly intended so red can actually deal with this. Else wise this would just curb stop red deck single-handedly.

All standard banter aside.. I'm already plotting a deck with Preyseizer Dragon, Scourge of Valkas, Balefire Dragon, Scourge of the Throne, and Dragon Broodmother. This could be a beast. I like it!

BotaNickill says... #23

Atarka is awesome, and I'll show you why. T-1, forest, Elvish Mystic. T-2, Mountain, 2nd mystic, and Generator Servant.T-3, play land, sac servant. play Atarka, World Render. swing 12. T-4, play land, play Xenagos, God of Revels, swing 24 Atarka. Good luck keeping up with that! Play Ranger's Guile to keep the creatures alive, and back it all with burn, ramp, and Stormbreath Dragon. Boom!

Well, maybe not a standard-warping, format crunching, over-powered card. She is nice for casual dragon tribal, and is a kick-ass commander.

February 6, 2015 1:11 a.m.

BotaNickill says... #28

I rebuilt my Gruul Midrange deck around this card. If played out correctly, Atarka can swing for 12 on turn 3, and again for 24 on turn 4. Ideally, it would go like this. T-1, play Forest, cast Elvish Mystic. T-2, play Mountain, another elf, and Generator Servant. T-3, Play land, sac generator servant, tap elfs, play Atarka, World Render with haste, swing 12. T-4, play land, cast Xenagos, God of Revels, swing 24 Atarka Wins!
