Wow, what a card.

It's much cheaper, I'll give it that. I think it's going to see play in the recent BW Human decks. It'll be really nice with Xathrid Necromancer .

He's cheap, but his static ability doesn't seem all that great to me. I don't know a single opponent who would not pay 3 life to prevent you from just returning Obzedat, Ghost Council to your hand. And if it's a cheap creature that doesn't mean much, they would just choose to put it back in your hand. Although it works well with Pack Rat for discard fodder in that scenario.

It's also interesting that it specifies creatures you own. Is Wizards considering cards like Hypnotic Siren and Ashiok, Nightmare Weaver to be relevant for this?

Also of note; the creature still dies, so Ashen Rider is something to consider. Once again though, that works best in a reanimation shell, where you might want the creature in your yard. In which case sending him back to your hand might be a downside.

Although he does seem pretty good in BW humans. I guess I was just hoping for something reanimate-y.

So I have a regular W/B midrange deck and I'm not sure if I should run athereos or not.its your standerd midrange deck, and the best option I have to take out for him is 2 Sin Collector . What do you guys suggest taking out if I do add him?

Athreos seems really good in Orzhov/Esper Humans against control. It changes the control players math completely, since casting a Supreme Verdict against three creatures (or more) becomes really expensive.

Probably a two or three of. If not, Athreos is atleast another sideboard option against Esper.

Intriguing though, Athreos works so well against Supreme Verdict but does NOTHING against Anger of the Gods . Demons and Dragons aka Rakdos Control is happy about another favorable matchup now.

GoldGhost012 You know, you say it jokingly, but I think that's what is going to end up happening. Which is sad, because I looove obzedat but holy shit this card is amazing and I need multiple playsets...along with keranos.

I have a different deck in mind for Athreos, He is going to work perfectly in my Deathbringers. I imagine the synergy with Blood Artist and Dusk Urchins is going to be fantastic! Will probably end up dropping Sorin, Lord of Innistrad for him. The deck isn't standard at all though so you may not wanna check it out if that's what you're looking for.

Standard applications look kinda bleak for him in my opinion. I don't see him being anywhere near as competitive as Iroas or Xenagos and he doesn't fit well in black devotion decks. I could see him working decently in B/W Humans but I don't know how I feel about it.

This is disgustingly good, I almost feel like it should be 4 mana. @CrazyLittleGuy: This is clearly meant for Orzhov aggro, not midrange.

Out of curiosity, If you were playing him as a commander would the paying 3 count as commander damage? It doesn't say that it is Athreos doing the damage, but the damage is caused by him.

TexasDice says... #19

No mummersfarce. First, its not damage, it's lifeloss. A payment, specifically. Second, only combat damage counts as commander damage.

Can't wait to play him!!

April 12, 2014 6:42 p.m.

@ChrisHansonBiomancin Yeah, I know. I was just tossing out ideas, I can tell he's meant for BW (or even Esper) humans. Once again, I was just hoping for a reanimator card honestly.
