I really hope the mockup got the name right.

this card name alone makes me want to play Mardu just so I can say his name all the time

Ohthenoises says... #4

God that's a powerful dude, turn everyone into Glissa, the Traitor ? Sure!

September 2, 2014 5:41 p.m.

GoldGhost012 says... #5

That's pretty powerful for an intro pack rare.

September 2, 2014 5:42 p.m.

GoldGhost012 says... #6

For those that are interested, the intro packs also have these rares for Sultai and Temur, respectively:

avalanche tusker....blech. I'm not going near that in constructed. Maybe in limited...maybe?

September 2, 2014 5:54 p.m.

VampireArmy says... #8

I'm not a fan of its casting cost but meh

JWiley129 says... #9

The name? Definitely top 10. This is a Limited BOMB and might see play in Constructed? It'd definitely see play at , but I don't want to THINK about that world.

Blizzicane says... #10

Cat Demon that is all.

September 2, 2014 6:05 p.m.

Ohthenoises says... #11

VampireArmy It has haste. That speaks for something. If it didn't have haste I'd completely agree.

September 2, 2014 6:07 p.m.

VampireArmy says... #12

Hm...i look at everything from a modern perspective so that could be why i find it hard to enjoy mardu very much right now

September 2, 2014 6:09 p.m.

-Fulcrum says... #13

Ankle Shanker may indeed be the best name ever, but I don't know about its viability in constructed. It's a little slow and irrelevant to what aggro wants to do and doesn't seem to really do enough for midrange. Could be good in a token build, but that's all I can really think of.

NixTheThird says... #14

Smoke your modern, I see turn three Generator Servant into SHANK plus some other one drop... that just happens to be deathtouching and first striking. I mean, just give me a moment to dream:

Oh no, Sultai is wiping the board with -X/-X shenanigans!-Mardu Ascendancy , Athreos, God of Passage

Oh no, Sarkhan, the Dragonspeaker is totes traitor!- Utter End , Hero's Downfall

Oh no, Azban is being rude and putting up chump blockers!-Mardu Ascendancy AGAIN, Archetype of Aggression

Oh no, I need to change my boxers... MARDU AIN'T GOT TIME FOR DAT.

StuntmanTheThird thanks for being inspiring bro. I'll try to be more imaginative

pskinn01 says... #16

this is a limited bomb.

1st pick If opened 1st pack, you then have your colors, and they are all known for small creatures and removal.

May even go into my edh angel deck as a support card.

jr92_2000 says... #17

Can't I just keep my Legion Loyalist ?

Handing out first strike/deathtouch is pretty damn powerful combination, but you'd definitely have to slow the clan down to play this guy.

NixTheThird says... #18

I like to spend time in Magical Christmas Land when I can, Vampire Army...

But no, in the end, 5 cmc for a 3/3 with haste that basically makes it nearly impossible for your army to be blocked? That's not exactly the worst top end card for an aggro strategy. It lacks the game ending slam of the very best aggro top end cards and it won't pull you out of a losing situation very easily. These are all true knocks against it, however, it does suddenly make all those little 1 or 2 toughness aggro minions very, very relevant in an otherwise stable board, and brings it home when all you need is a few more points of damage.

What I'm really not sure of is this cat demon dude and his uncomfortable attraction to Delve... better be soem crazy delve cards coming up.

Wellp, wrong VampireArmy

pookypuppy6 says... #20

So apparently first strike and deathtouch, a combination that im Magic terms normally associates to masterful assassins (Nirkana Cutthroat ) and demons of deathly power (Master of Cruelties ) now refers to... shanking ankles? Didn't realize everyone's weak spot was a bit higher than an Achilles' Heel.

tempest says... #21

pookypuppy6 ahaha.. nice. i guess they were infected with rabies or something...

September 2, 2014 7:26 p.m.

So, this card is sweet. Goblin Rabblemaster and him will have good times.

I knew what this thread was before I even clicked the title (already saw the preview).

Glad we think alike Ohthenoises lol

Ohthenoises says... #24

sylvannos SERIOUSLY! Best name EVER! Reminds me of someone referring to goblins as anklebiters.

TheGamer says... #25

Ok, so basically he says "im gonna attack, and if you block you're gonna die". Seems a little too good imo. I have a feeling he'll see play, but the question is where?

5 mana is a lot for Aggro, but its super good! I dunno. I LOVE the name, I LOVE the flavor, I HATE the fact there is reminder text, but other than that he seems cool. But like I said, my only issue with tis card is where is this gonna see play?

September 2, 2014 9:28 p.m.

GoldGhost012 says... #26

I'm pretty sure he has reminder text because he's the front of the intro deck. He has a different image and will most likely have no reminder text on his actual Khans of Tarkir card that comes from the booster pack.

September 2, 2014 9:31 p.m.

TheGamer says... #27

Oh, that makes sense GoldGhost012.

September 2, 2014 9:33 p.m.

pskinn01 says... #28

is there a typo on the reminder text? It says it "deals damage before creatures with first strike." Either it is a typo, or it makes it OP.

September 2, 2014 10:08 p.m.

GoldGhost012 says... #29

It's a mockup. It was misread.

September 2, 2014 10:09 p.m.

ChiefBell says... #30

It's a really good top end to aggro. Basically saying: 'I turn my creatures sideways and if you block them you lose next turn and if you don't you lose this turn'. Which us threatening enough to warrant 5 mana I'd say.

The other 2 aren't bad. The sultai one goes well with delve, obviously, and the temur one forces a block if your choice which could be useful against bothersome combos or utility creatures (Kiora's Follower , Brain Maggot , other)

September 3, 2014 1:35 a.m.

Meh it could find a home. If I'm running 5 drops in an aggro deck it better be durable and be a threat on it's own, this fellow isn't. He also lacks true evasion. Elves, satyr tokens, Elspeth tokens, and Soldier of the Pantheon are chumping all day. Stormbreath Dragon , Sarkhan, the Dragonspeaker , Underworld Cerberus , and the new Roc are better 5 drops for decks in his colors.

TheRedDude says... #32

I'm going to test him, if only to shank peoples ankles

September 3, 2014 9:17 a.m.

Uzumaki1 says... #33

Now a 2/2 that's very annoying was oplanning on running him in a midrange deck with elspeths

September 11, 2014 9:56 a.m.

abenz419 says... #34

I actually thought this was a pretty solid card for an intro pack rare as a 3/3... now, not so much.
