Anyone who missed the major announcement today about the changing of standard rotation and set structures:
http://www.magicspoiler.com/mtg-news/beginning-fall-2015-magic-blocks-will-two-sets-changes/
Here is my topic: What is going on with the code names of the two sets after Tarkir? They have pointed out that Blood and Sweat are one block and Tears and Fears are another, but look at the carryover between them, it's shaped strangely.
From a simple structural standpoint
[BLOOD]Block1setA-[SWEAT]Block1setB
[TEARS]Block2setA-[FEARS]Block2setB
matches their description of the new structuring, however there is something here that im hoping you will have noticed by now about these code names and their groupings. TEARS, while it matches FEARS in a pairing, also satisfies the end of a three part pattern that goes BLOOD SWEAT TEARS. I cant possibly believe this is unintentional, but the ramifications are quite interesting as its a new presentation structure that we havent seen before. The closest we have is the Lorwyn block. Given the fact that we have had two new planes in a row now, it would not be surprising for Blood to be a Return to _.
What say you!? Is there another way to read this? Are you aware to which where we will be returning? Have you a guess? Have at it!
The blocks used to be:
- Blood
- Sweat
- Tears
- Lock
- Stock
- Barrel
(According to Wikipedia before the announcement was made)
I'm guessing they altered the names to fit the new block structure.
Yeah, they did do something similar with Lorwyn block. I think it was supposed to be:
- Peanut
- Butter
- Jelly
But they split it into two blocks of 2 and just changed it to:
- Peanut
- Butter
and made Shadowmoor block:
- Jelly
- Doughnut
I could be wrong about that last bit.

Re: Doughnut
that fits this structure spot on in the sense that set 4 in the sequence has a relationship with 3, but not with 1 or 2, while 3 has two relationships, one with 1 and 2, and one with 4.
ergo, the main questions as I see them: is it then a super block like lorwyn? is it a return to lorwyn?

There would be no reason for a 4 block Return to Lorwyn since the Aurora and Shadowmoor don't exist anymore. Plus there's a lot more demand for Return to Zendikar.

C'mon man...we haven't even had khans yet and you're concerned with a block we literally know nothing of.

In other words, "Look, we already had code names, we're not changing the stupid code names just because we ripped asunder the entire face of Magic, capisce?"

It could also be that these set names have been released for quite some time, and they didn't want to spoil their changes to standard early. They could left it at 3 names that go together i.e. "Blood - Sweat - Tears", so that they could keep the new changes under wraps.
In the wake of their announcement they are now freely able to change the names how they please, but they already named the third set of the upcoming block "Tears", so they just went with Tears and Fears.
