Despite being terminally lazy, I’m apparently the only one who’s allowed to start threads on this board, so here we are.
Three Tree City: Notably, also tokens.
Offspring: Very cute, although might be a little bothersome to keep track off
It always takes me a couple of days to catch up on previews. I got some time off today, so I'm almost up to date.
Another Mystery Booster Playtest mechanic arises!
Kaervek, the Spiteful + Maha, Its Feathers Night (not enough poetic, too much awkward in that name) could be interesting. Would it be good enough for Pioneer?
New art for Run Away Together by Omar Rayyan. He's got the right style for this sort of pastoral setting.

My friend is ready to rock for Frog Tribal and I have been voluntold to build her a deck. I must prepare myself...
So, any ideas for Flubs, the Fool because this is the target of her affection...and I am kind of baffled by this little guy.

golgarigirl my joyfriend is a bona fide frog boy, so I've been thinking much the same thing.
Impulse draw was my first thought, alongside Storm and Song of Creation type shenanigans.
Feels like this deck wants big and fast turns.

I have yet to examine any power level or even understand any of some of the new mechanics.... but the aesthetics are absolutely amazing and I love it... really reminds me of shadowmoor!

I love the art for Flubs, the Fool, and the nod to The Fool tarot card.
golgarigirl, I can definitely see a build using a bunch of Looting & Rummaging effects to storm off with a Mizzix's Mastery or Underworld Breach.
You could also sprinkle in stuff like Madness or Threshold to make use of discarding & having a full yard. Flubs is so funky and open-ended, I'm interested in seeing what builds pop up.

Coward_Token if you're not prepared for that, just wait until you find out what the keyword mechanic on the face of the Jeskai precon is ;)
I was fully prepared to not care about this set in the least, but the mechanics are pretty neat, even if the flavor is still a miss for me. The fursona versions of existing planeswalkers makes me curious if that was for fun or the lore implications of traveling to this plane; or more importantly, what happens when native residents leave. Would Mabel be a human if she went through an Omenpath? What about one of the larger predator animals? Is Maha secretly a dragon on other planes?

12/10 on this set all around, I cannot remember the last time a set felt this exciting and fresh! The story was pretty clumsy, with a vague "prophecy" just basically thrown at Ral at the very end, but was otherwise nice.
The Offspring mechanic is my favorite mechanic in a while! Really really sad that the Jeskai commander got it cause it feels like such a perfect fit for Bant tokens and lil guys type strats but such is the crumbling cookie. ):
Surprising no one I agree with Crow_Umbra- the most exciting mechanic is the raccoons! I think Expend feels new, and very flavorful for RG being colors that can produce extra mana, and it fills a whole new role for similar cards in the future that has been unexplored thus far.
Last thing I'll say is I have seen quite a few complaints online about the new tokens with mana costs and.... As someone who loves to make token copies of stuff this is nothing new and has been happening since Cackling Counterpart and even earlier cards before it. Seems like such a weird gripe to me?

I'm for this set so far. I loved Thrones of Eldraine and this is giving me similar vibes for quality. Power level doesn't seem crazy. The art direction seems way better than "everyone gets a trenchcoat" or "everyone wears a cowboy hat". The world itself feels vastly more coherent than the slop that was Thunder Junction.
More of this please.

Tsukimi my personal theory as to why Jeskai got the offspring commander deck and not Bant is that Bant shares too many colors with the existing double-ETB hallmark, Yarok, the Desecrated, and they didn't want Yarok to get all those tools and instead focused on developing Jeskai's ETB mechanics, which is cool!
Especially since we just got a bunch of Energy-ETB Jeskai creatures in MH3 0.0

Just checked and offspring is an ETB trigger, which only further cements this theory. You get sextuple times the ETB triggers if you pay an offspring cost with Yarok on the field. They probably didn't want to encourage that.
July 10, 2024 11:38 a.m.
TheOfficialCreator Yea that makes a lot of sense, just really bored with bant commanders as of late always doing generic/boring stuff that other colors usually have similar if not better access to. I feel like Bant commanders either swings hyper competitive (Rafiq, Derevi, etc.) or extremely group hug/casual and it'd be fun to see more commanders that fall somewhere in the middle.
Also been waiting for Bant to get something akin to a 1 power matters commander haha - buuut either way, the card itself is a really cool design space. Just feel that Jeskai already has so many versatile and interesting commanders already. (I know my bias is showing real hard)
July 10, 2024 11:43 a.m.
In other combos I have no idea what to do with, Ygra, Eater of All and Sarulf, Realm Eater have some nice color, thematic, and mechanical overlap. Munch munch!
July 10, 2024 1:28 p.m.
Bello, Bard of the Brambles Has the look of something different for for once. The power level is pretty amped up on that one as well. That will be a GOOD option for a commander for an aggressive enchantress shell outside of the usual Selesnya faire. Beyond that, he works in some other archetype shells too.
This dude has an aggressive CMC to boot.
July 10, 2024 6:25 p.m.
I think it was a good design choice for the colors as well to make the effect: "During your turn". It seems like should be fairly crappy when it comes to defensive play, at least when you have some pretty aggressive abilities like this.

I like Bello. Big artifact ramp into big creature make big heart big happy.
July 10, 2024 7:42 p.m.
Bello feels fresh and exciting and I'm looking forward to building my first RG deck with them.
July 10, 2024 7:44 p.m.
I have a Naya enchantress deck that will be very happy to make its' many 4+cmc enchantments into swingin pieces. While replacing Ohran frostfang

Torn between Bello and Zinnia. I think I might go for Zinnia, Valley's Voice and swap out Satya, Aetherflux Genius and the energy support from his deck.

Kinda hate Dawn's Truce. Is white Heroic Intervention that big a deal?
Don't like Hivespine Wolverine being able to fight on ETB, even if it's only vs tokens. Green fight n' bite should strictly go on noncreature cards (except vs flying).
Feel like Otters got a color identity just to compensate for Lutri, the Spellchaser being banned in commander
July 13, 2024 8:12 a.m.
The Season cycle looks solid to me. Powerful and flexible without being overpowered. They won't go in every commander deck of their colors, but they'll be good fits in the ones they do go in.
Innkeeper's Talent is going to be really good in a lot of decks.
Diresight seems like a new staple.
Gossip's Talent also looks pretty good in the right kind of deck. Surveil 1 for any creature entering your battlefield is gonna be quite good.

Iridescent Vinelasher and Mistbreath Elder seem absurdly powercrept. Mistbreath especially.
Like uhh, I usually like my one-mana 2/2s to have drawbacks, not bonuses ;n;

TheOfficialCreator kinda Greenbelt Rampager territory, no? Might be breakable tho with cheap etb creatures

sergiodelrio yeah I misread the first half of its ability at first. It's still really strong as it never forces you to bounce itself. (I thought you could choose not to bounce the other creatures)

More bad predictions and random thoughts.
Baylen, the Haymaker is a great name. Literally making hay while swinging haymakers. Baylen is balin' while bailin' you out.
Got some discard with Bandit's Talent, always happy to see that.
Darkstar Augur is my pick for hit of the set. Reasonably costed, lots of card advantage, and an evasive attacker. Lots of good stuff. Starfall Invocation's up there, too.
My next theme deck is cards that are just fun to say. Start with Polliwallop and Hypothesizzle.
Wick, the Whorled Mind feels like Commander bait, but it's probably there to tie in WOE for a Standard Grixis Rats deck. Fair enough.
July 13, 2024 5:03 p.m.
Helga is interesting but as someone who always reads the story somewhat disappointed to see the card doesn't match her character very well.
July 13, 2024 10:55 p.m.
This definitely goes infinite with something, right? This is like Pestermite with half of the Splinter Twin already built in. You can probably do something silly with Heritage Druid, Glimpse of Nature, and Arcane Adaptation. Then do something with Raise the Palisade to act like a Paradoxical Outcome combined with Wrath of God.

Can someone explain the flavor of rats being into snails? Besides the pseudo-grixis legendary there's Thought Shucker and Lightshell Duo

(Also, if this wasn't a Standard set, Wick would totaly have "Amass Snail 1")
July 14, 2024 7:39 a.m.
Coward_Token Rats in bloomburrow have psychic powers and they use those powers to bond with and sometimes control insects. They're featured in a lot of rat cards for the set.
Also if I am not mistaken those snails in particular are the brain parasite snails which feels extra flavorful

sylvannos Sprout Swarm if you have enough frogs/birds/otters/rats you go infinite
July 14, 2024 7:45 p.m.
sergiodelrio says... #35
To be more specific:
T1: Land, Birds of Paradise OR Gilded Goose
T2: Land, Play 3 creatures that are Bird/Otter/Rat/Frog like Elusive Otter, Silver Raven or more Birds of Paradise/Gilded Goose
T3: Land, pass the turn - then, in response to something or at opponent's EOT - flash in Valley Floodcaller... you now have 5 creatures to Convoke + Buyback Sprout Swarm, untap the creatures, repeat a million times.
T4: untap with invincible army that goes both big AND wide
July 15, 2024 5:54 a.m.
sergiodelrio says... #36
Sorry for triple posting but in my example above I somehow missed that you could just pre-combat go off on T3 and then attack with 3-4 hard-to-block creatures that each have a million power and toughness, yea.

Karn becoming a cartoon talking tree is unexpectedly wholesome
Rabbits not being some kind of red is weird, haste is a natural fit for them. IMO should have traded their color identity with the mice.
Eluge, Shoreless Sea: "each turn" and instants! Enjoy your free counterspells, eventually.
Portent of Calmanity: Not bad for e.g. Atraxa, Grand Unifier and Loot, the Key to Everything
July 16, 2024 5:15 p.m.
Eluge and the "floodmoon" merfolk from MH3 are exciting for merfolk EDH cause I really love the idea of playing to the strength of islandwalk - but most old flood counters forcibly change the land to only an island (which doesn't feel great) this new direction for flood counters makes it fun to have island payoffs without shutting down people's mana.
Also Jackdaw Savior is a slam dunk in Giada angels, and honestly makes me want to build a deck around it. Maybe Derevi bird typal? Time will tell.

Dragonhawk: Sorry, but at this point dragons being shoehorned into every plane just because they're popular is a pet peeve of mine.
July 17, 2024 4:17 p.m.
Crow_Umbra says... #41
Dragonhawk was finally confirmed as real?
It seems like it's one of Kolaghan's brood. I kinda like that a "regular" dragon becomes Legendary because it's so alien to the inhabitants of the plane.
July 17, 2024 4:26 p.m.
Octomancer is my new favorite card! What a fun design space exploration, Oprah Octopuses! The Bant subcommander looks like an interesting take on group hug as well.
While I am all for answers to Treaure tokens considering how ubiquitous they have become Bloodroot Apothecary feels like... way too much.

Bloodroot Apothecary -> All is Dust, or something. Feels like it could be a black card.

More signs of Gruul getting some enchantress love if anyone else caught the enchantment-cascade wolf

Thank you for holding it down Coward_Token. The rest of us should draw straws for starting the next thread.
I'm very excited for Raccoons in general. I've wanted more of them in MtG, especially since New Capenna didn't quite scratch that itch for me. I haven't made a Gruul deck yet, so I'm looking forward to trying something new.
