Chandra's Conundrum

Spoilers, Rumors, and Speculation forum

Just wondering... Kaladesh is Chandra's home plane, so it would be obvious to print a new one, right. But Chandra, Flamecaller was just printed in Oath of the Gatewatch, would this be weird? Opinions!

We've had multiples of individual planeswalkers in Standard before. Just look at RTR-THS standard when M15 came out. We had Ajani, Caller of the Pride+Ajani, Mentor of Heroes+Ajani Steadfast all at the same time.

This is fine, at least to me. Chandra used to have (and maybe still does) the least amount of printings in a non-core set by the original Planeswalkers. The last time she was printed in a non-core set before Oath of the Gatewatch was Worldwake. That's a long time, and I think she's due for some more spotlight in central events (and more printings).

I'm just hoping that her return home will allow her to get more training from her parents, so she can start to do new things... like creating Thopter tokens?... or interact with artifacts in some way.

She's still have some burn, of course... can't take that away from her.

Something like... "-1: Put a 1/1 Flying Atrofact Creature token onto the battlefield, then exile the top card of your library. If that card is an Instant or Sorcery, you may cast it this turn."

You know.... something with more utility.

Well I'm going to assume the woman on the cover art for Kaladesh is Chandra's Mother, as the name of the second set has already been announced and is referencing the civil war that happened on Kaladesh that resulted in the death of Chandra's parents, who died during their involvement in the rebellion, as is hinted by flavor text and all the other lore text they provided during Origins.

So if Chandra shows up at all it will likely only be in the art and as a reference. At most maybe as a creature or some sort of "enchantment."

+1 makes thopters, -2 burns creatue/players equal to the number of artifacts you control?

JWiley129 says... #7

Rayenous - Her parents are dead. That's part of the reason her spark ignited.

May 16, 2016 4:21 p.m.

Also note - a planeswalker doesn't necessarily need to appear on their home plane - Gideon didn't appear on Theros, Liliana never appeared on Dominaria, etc. until Origins.

I'm pretty confident we'll see chandra on kaladesh, I think the issue is what's driving us to there big-picture/gatewatch wise. Like I'm assuming wizard's new storytelling model will have some kind of story reason for the transition between the two.

I'm going to assume that Kaladesh and Aether Revolt are both prequel stories to A) show us more detail of Kaladesh beyond what Origins showed us and B) further explain why there was a civil war that led to the death of Chandra's parents and ultimately ignited the spark of one of the more influential Planeswalkers in the multiverse.

The woman on the front is saheeli rai and she's a new, presumable artifactish, planeswalker.

TMBRLZ says... #12

I began to gather that after reading some more posts on the site.

Perhaps she's the one who ends up leading or starting the rebellion?

May 16, 2016 4:39 p.m.

Khans of Tarkir gave us Sarkhan. Dragons of Tarkir also gave us Sarkhan. That's two in the same block. What's your issue?

So the gatewatch vacations on kaladesh after icing the eldrazi? Seems legit.

May 16, 2016 8:44 p.m.

MtG sets happen in chronological order. They won't do a flashback plane for no reason. If we were going to the past Wizards would be explicit about it. Story is one of the areas they are trying to stay extremely cohesive with.

Basically, this is a new conflict on Kaladesh. Perhaps it's been brewing since the uprising that killed Pia and Kiran and ignited Chandra.

Alright. Hey. Alright. Good job, guys. Let's just not come in tomorrow. Let's just take a day. Have you ever tried shawarma? There's a shawarma joint about two planes from here. I don't know what it is, but I wanna try it.

- Gideon, probably

It seems more like a positive resort vacation where the Watch can crash and drink a few pina coladas served by steam-punk butlers. Small riot breaks out, they just go meh and planeswalk away.

Story of Kaladesh Confirmed.

When I saw the title of this thread, I thought that a new card had been revealed: with that being said, does anyone think that "Chandra's conundrum" would be an awesome name for a card?

Also, I definitely think that the plot of this block shall involve Chandra returning to her home plane and leading a revolt against the totalitarian government that rules it, as the idea of freedom fighters opposing a tyrannical regime always makes for a great story.

May 16, 2016 11:01 p.m.

PistonGolem says... #21

That would be a cool card. Think about it... Chandra sparked the flames of rebellion, does she support the rebels or the artificers? (Hint: Why would she support the artificers who wanted to cut her throat in front of a cheering crowd?)

Fairly positive that's false (the chronological part). I take your argument and raise you a Rayenous (who knows far more than I do about MtG lore).

A new Chandra's been confirmed in the 'Ramp of Approval' article that confirmed Planeswalker decks, but only as a new card for her Planeswalker deck.

"Each Planeswalker Deck will have a brand-new planeswalker card, obviously of the Planeswalker the deck is themed around"

They'll also be Standard legal: "Planeswalker Decks will be playable in Standard"

There might also be another Chandra in Kaladesh's main set, but regardless, we'll at least have one new version of her from her Planeswalker Deck.

TMBRLZ - Actually, it was stated by Wizards they they will be keeping the story arc fairly consistent in terms of time line. Even the story line of Conspiracy is supposed to be things which are happening in parallel with the stories which follow the main Planeswalker protagonists.

It is not impossible to see cards which reflect things from the past, but it should be rare... they would have to be relevant to the current story, as well has have a 'sub-story' in which it is revealed. - 2 recent examples: 1) Sorin visits Olvia, and tells her the story of Nahiri's arrival on Innistrad and the events leading to Nahiri trapped in the Hellvault. - 2) Tamiyo reading stories from her scrolls, allowing her to summon/conjure items/abilities form distant times on distant planes. - Both of these could allow for printing of cards which represent 'past' events.

I can't see them going to Kaladesh, and not have Chandra go there, so we can expect her... but it will be in a time where her parents are already dead, and many years after Chandra was thought to have been executed... or more accurately, appear to have exploded seconds before she was to be executed.

I'll have to go reread Chandra's Origin story to brush up on a few details.

I am excited for "bringing back/debuting a mechanic MaRo's been trying to do for ages".

Likely contraptions... but he's also mentioned that he wants to see 'poison counters' again... not likely poison though, as it doesn't seem to fit the Plane.

I think it's Affinity! With artifact lands. Cause that can't possibly be busted again.

Also, I'm thinking that or may be the antagonist colors of the block.

If these colors play a similar 'leadership' role as seen on Ravnica, they would be the colors which have banned fire magic (and probably necromancy, and possibly other forms of magic they can't otherwise control).

Given what is known about Kaladesh and its government, I would expect a white and blue major antagonist, since the governing body is absolute and controlling and seems to dislike emotional, impulse, and individuality.

I also believe that it would be very interesting to have Tezzeret appear in this block, because he has not been seen in some time and it would be interesting to contrast his style of artifice against that of Kaladesh (also, would it not be an interesting twist if he brought Phryexian oil to the plane?).

May 17, 2016 3:09 p.m.

Jazzyboy says... #34

I hope they don't bring Phyrexians to Kaladesh. We'll see the Phyrexians again when we revisit Mirrodin. Meanwhile, Kaladesh can have it's own antagonists with an original storyline.

A civil war between the current ruling government and those who want to bring back natural forces and magic would be interesting. The conflict between mages and non-mages might be reminiscent of Dragon Age's story, in which mages are subjugated due to the non-mages' fear of their power.
