So, what do you guys anticipate for Commander 2015 set? At this point I don't think that any info has been released yet. But Mark Rosewater has said on his Tumblr blog that 4 color legendaries are on the To-Do List, which I hope they will do this year.

Hjaltrohir says... #2

It will probably be either 4 color decks or 5 2 color decks with the other 5 next year.

ChiefBell says... #3

Don't they only do like one extra 'fun set' a year, and this year it's modern masters?

February 3, 2015 2:10 a.m.

cr14mson says... #4

They already confirmed Commander will be a yearly thing.

February 3, 2015 2:13 a.m.

Unforgivn_II says... #5

Yeah, just like duel decks, there are 2 per year. Last year had Conspiracy in the summer and Commander in the fall. I expect MM2 to take Conspiracy's place and we'll see C15 in November

February 3, 2015 2:17 a.m.

So far away :(

ChiefBell says... #7

Mm2 is May.

I'll admit that I would love for Wizards to make upgraded Legendary versions of the Nephilim creatures from the Guildpact set so that they can be used as commanders. Lots of people have wished that Ink-Treader Nephilim was legendary.

If it was two color, I'd like to see enemy colors first. I'd also like to see more focused decks this time around, like having there only be two general strategies with the decks. That's one gripe I've had with the commander decks they released. I get why they do it, so people have more customization options, but sometimes the three strategy thing made the decks weaker out of the box.

February 3, 2015 2:23 a.m.

Unforgivn_II says... #10

Yeah, May 30th. Thats basically summer. It'll be available during the summer at the very least, with stores holding drafts and such like they did with CNS

asasinater13 says... #11

I think it would be fun to see the 4-color decks and a 6th deck for colorless (or 5 color) because there's no way to make colorless and 5-color fit a cycle well, they'll have to either do incomplete cycles as their 5 or do more than 5 to make it work well, and I haven't seen anywhere that commander decks are locked in at 5 decks a year.

February 3, 2015 2:57 a.m.

kyuuri117 says... #12

Eh.. I guess I don't really care if they make it four color edh or not. I know there aren't many options for 4 color edh, but it just seems like it wouldn't even be that popular. At that point, it's probably just better to go five or three color, going for a theme with 5 colors or an actual competitive deck with three. Four colors just feels like the worst of all worlds in a format like EDH where each color provides so many options. Guess we'll see.

February 3, 2015 3:13 a.m.

asasinater13 says... #13

yeah, 4 color would be difficult, but it would be a good chance for wizards to use the (as maro has stated) very limited 4-color design space easily. I think selling decks with mana bases able to stand up to 4 colors would be interesting to see how wizards does, without printing all of the value cards in the landbase.

I also think it would be interesting for back to back years of 2-color, with a 6th deck for 5C and another year with one for colorless (personal theory I want to hold on to because it would be cool to see happen)

kyuuri117 says... #14

Though I will say I was super impressed with some of the mono-colored decks. The red, white and green ones were all designed super well, and are pretty damn competitive with some minor upgrades. Pretty excited to see what they come up with next.

pookypuppy6 says... #15

@ChiefBell: The "casual supplement" (like Conspiracy, Modern Masters, etc.) come in the summer, while Comander is now a yearly thing released in November. Last year Comander 2014 was released in November in the same year as Conspracy, of course.

I'm more into two-colour decks than four-colour, four coloured legendaries aren't at all attractive to me. I prefer the restriction of two/three colour decks in card choice and the resulting inexpensiveness of the nonbasic lands. It also gives the decks a chance to reprint the previous Commander two-colour legendaries like Skullbriar, the Walking Grave or Nin, the Pain Artist.

February 3, 2015 5:31 a.m.

ChiefBell says... #16

Cool. But they can't just keep doing commander right? Once they've exhausted all the colour combinations - what then? There are 30 colour combinations for reference - 5 mono, 10 dual, 10 tri, 5 quad.

February 3, 2015 5:42 a.m.

-Fulcrum says... #17

That's still 6 years of product, assuming they keep the pattern of 5 per year. After which point, they can repeat color combinations with new generals and decklists. I imagine WotC will release Commander product as long as it remains popular and makes money.

February 3, 2015 6:05 a.m.

ChiefBell says... #18

Well they've done 5 mono and 5 tri. I understand that wizards will do it for as long as they can from a money perspective but I sense it becoming a bit stale.

February 3, 2015 6:19 a.m.

Gidgetimer says... #19

They have done all 10 tri-color combinations. Before they started with the yearly release they did the wedges in 2011. I've only ever seen MaRo say that they wouldn't do 4 color legendaries because the design space turns into being about what is missing than what is there. I personally don't care since past 3 color I feel is excessive to try to make a cohesive deck.

I would like to see the 2 color decks made and would like to see enemy colors first since I think it is a more interesting design space. I also want to see a new legendary since I don't like any of the current ones.

February 3, 2015 6:53 a.m.

ChiefBell says... #20

Indeed! They have already done all 10 tricolours

February 3, 2015 6:59 a.m.

pookypuppy6 says... #21

@ChiefBell: I kinda agree with vault about the length of the product line, but I also think that after, say, 6 years or so, there is a possibility that people will be interesting in more of the same colour combinations, particulatly the wedge-coloured generals (wedges being both typically underserved and generally v. popular as colour cobinations of course). I wouldn't be surprised to see another wedge-themed Commander release, and I certainly wouldn't be unhappy to see them.

Also, what do we guys think about Planeswalkers Comanders in the future? I didn't get all into the planeswalkers on their first time out in Commander manly because I'm not all that into mono-colour. But two-colour planeswalkers designed for Comander play does leave me salivating a pinch.

maiden77 says... #22

there is not such thing as stale EDH ;-). I have only been playing it for around 8 years, and i always discover, or rediscover a general and build a brand new deck around it. I have an EDH cube that yields new and exciting decks all the time. I think as long as Wizards can keep printing new and interesting cards and legends, it will live on, theres a hell of a lot of colour combinations and then there is the possibility of 4 colour as stated, plus we could have new variations like artifact creature legends, or enchantments etc. Theres a crap load of design space that I think will just keep increasing and keep the product interesting. IMO each and every Commander deck has been great and unique, and somehow the mono colour feel the best, contrary to popular belief about mono versus multi colour in EDH. I hope I am at least partially right, and it keeps going, nice and fresh. FOREVER! :-)

Rayenous says... #23

I don't think there should always have to be 5 decks... though they probably want to produce close to that, so they make more sales...

I think 2 themed 5 color decks (Slivers?, and Child of Alara board wipe?), and 1 colorless would be interesting. - If they come to a decision on colorless mana producing basic land.

Also, they probably could do 5x 5-color decks. Any combination of...
Slivers - Sliver Hivelord
Scarecrows - Reaper King
Elementals - Horde of Notions
Dragons - Scion of the Ur-Dragon
Atog...? - Atogatog
Gods - Karona, False God
Creatureless (man-lands) - Child of Alara
Political - Cromat

Any decks that don't have enough creature types, can use Changelings to round things out.

February 3, 2015 8:38 a.m.

cr14mson says... #24

lol at people who say 4-color is too much. try running 5 color EDH. it's fun...and evil nasty :D

Once they've exhausted the different color/less combinations, they can either repeat the popular ones, or go tribal (mixed mono and dual), or even release Tiny Leaders 2018!

February 3, 2015 10:10 a.m.

MagicalHacker says... #25

I really hope they make the 4-color legendaries (whenever they do it) designed so that it can be used without having all four colors, that way, people who feel that 4-color decks would be awkward for EDH can play them with 2 or 3 colors instead.

There are tons of ways to do that, with colored abilities in the rule text like the fate reforged khans and original mirrodin, with hybrid costs like from lorwyn-shadowmoor, with cards that don't need to be cast like oloro, and even new things like Phyrexian mana legends.

February 3, 2015 10:36 a.m.

K34 says... #26

I second Rayenous's idea for 5 different 5 color decks, that sounds awesome

February 3, 2015 12:35 p.m.

asasinater13 says... #27

I think there should be colorless at some point, even if it's just to add a basic(ish) land to the decks, or at least a any number of this in deck" land for it. maybe like some number of 5C and a colorless? three 5 color and two colorless would be cool. limit the options for purchase, but like, the Child of Alara deck would have to be expensive to make it worth playing, getting the good lands into the deck would put too much of a price cap on it compared to other decks, unless wizards has all the decks get a higher price tag (singles wise, not msrp wise)

asasinater13 says... #30

also with something like 2 colorless and 3 5C, it allows a reprint of eldrazi (at least one of the colorless could be eldrazi) which would be good and work well with mm15 having emrakul, because speculation I've seen and just thinking about it using 3 spots of the small size of mm15 for eldrazi is unlikely

Didgeridooda says... #31

I have a few ideas of things I would like to see.

They could do a duel deck commander release. 5 color vs. colorless.

Tribal EDH. They could have many creatures dual hat creature types, and run a sideboard that allows for 2 different tribes per pack.

February 3, 2015 3:45 p.m.

5 color tribal decks would be nice, but I'd like to see all new legends in the commander slot. Don't just reprint Horde of Notions or Sliver Queen, just to pull two out of the air. Do five-color generals that are Commander exclusive.

February 3, 2015 4:49 p.m.

kyuuri117 says... #33

Don't honestly understand the hype on five color decks. Doesn't appeal to me at all, and really hope they don't waste their time on that. Horde of Notions is really just Naya with some extra fill-ins, Child of Alara is really just Esper control with some extra fill-ins, etc. Just doesn't make sense to me.

Not saying there aren't exceptions. There always are. But the POINT of multi color decks is to add power at the cost of consistency. However, at some point, the power level CAN'T be raised any more, while the inconsistency ALWAYS gets higher with more colors. /shrug, to each their own I guess.

February 3, 2015 4:59 p.m.

Didgeridooda says... #34

One with an ability that states his commander tax is 1 instead of 2 would be cool.

February 3, 2015 5 p.m.

MagicalHacker says... #35

Honestly with the way 4-colored decks could be unappealing to lots of folks, I could see them doing 7 decks, the last two being colorless and 5-color.

I really hope they just print lots of the best colorless lands for the colorless deck (see MagicalHacker - Karn, Silver Golem).

February 3, 2015 5:56 p.m.

K34 says... #36

What would be nice is if they actually printed good lands in all of them. And I mean more than just 1 or 2. A mana base makes or breaks the deck.

February 3, 2015 8:06 p.m.

Didgeridooda says... #37

How about a new basic land that is colorless?

February 3, 2015 8:19 p.m.

kyuuri117 says... #38

Didgeridooda That's... not a bad idea. As long as it wasn't a colorless "artifact" land, it probably couldn't do any harm.

February 3, 2015 8:42 p.m.

kyuuri117 says... #39

Granted, there's probably no real point since all of the five basics can already tap for colorless, but it probably would be popular with the artifact fans for the art alone.

February 3, 2015 8:42 p.m.

You can't have normal basic lands in a colorless commander deck

February 3, 2015 8:46 p.m.

kyuuri117 says... #41

Really? Why? Land isn't a spell and doesn't have a color identity, and you can use off color fetch lands in edh decks. That doesn't make sense.

February 3, 2015 8:49 p.m.

Didgeridooda says... #42

Basic lands have a color identity even though they are colorless cards.

February 3, 2015 9:01 p.m.

Basic lands technically have the text that says "tap: add ? mana to your mana pool". So since it has the mana symbol on it, it has a color identity

February 3, 2015 9:01 p.m.

kyuuri117 says... #44

Ahhhhh, alright, that makes sense

February 3, 2015 9:02 p.m.

Didgeridooda says... #45

The mana symbols on a card count towards color identity.

February 3, 2015 9:03 p.m.

asasinater13 says... #46

maro confirmed that someone found a way to make an "have any number of this land" for colorless but I don't think it's a land type. commander decks seem like the place to put it.

February 3, 2015 10:48 p.m.

jasz says... #47

my moneys on a set of the dual colors it makes the road map for the next two years easier for woc, and they have previously stated that the difficulty with four color cards is that they become less about the colors synergy and more about the color they are excluding or hating on, also i would bet that later commander sets would theme less on color and more on specific mechanics like combining bolster and populate or possibly even tribal like they did with green in c14 to keep a repeating color combination fresh or go with a strategy that is not typical of the combination like agro green white for example.

February 4, 2015 1:23 a.m.

jasz says... #48

i think a cool way around the colorless mana problem for a colorless commander deck would be to have a commander that states that lands you control are colorless rather than their color identity, it would be some strange wording and would have to be static even when in command zone/graveyard etc but would fix the problem. although it would severely limit what your general could be for a colorless deck, but with so many of the best cards imo being artifacts or colorless it might balance it out.

February 4, 2015 1:32 a.m.

MagicalHacker says... #49

Or they could print a bunch of colorless utility lands in a colorless commander deck. Easy, simple, acquirable mana base.

February 4, 2015 9:45 a.m.

nobu_the_bard says... #50

Not that it matters, but I'd like to see an asymmetric deck lineup sometime, just because it'd create more variety in the differences between the decks. Like, one each of monocolor, dual color, tri-color, five-color, and colorless. I apologize if someone else stated that, I didn't read quite all of the posts above.

Personally prefer they stick to using legendary creatures as commanders though. C14 was an interesting occasion but not something I want to see again any time soon.
