Commander 2017 - Tribes revealed?

Spoilers, Rumors, and Speculation forum

So after looking for any other spoilers I noticed this:

http://magic.wizards.com/en/products/commander-2017

On the products coming page the background seems to confirm:

Dragons, Cats, Vampires? and unsure on the last... demons maybe?

Thoughts? :D

I don't really understand calling Cats a joke tribe. WotC certainly could have easily gone in a non-serious direction with them but they just never really did; they're almost all lions, tigers and other big cats or cat-people played entirely straight. One of the very few non-human recurring planeswalker characters is a cat!

Simply put, cats are one of the more well-supported undersupported tribes, so you wouldn't play it if you were looking for something stupid or funny to play (say, kithkins or imps), but you also probably wouldn't play it over another tribe if you wanted proper games of magic, because for the most part the tribe is pretty crappy.

In any case, since I skipped the group hug precon last year, I'm super excited to finally get myself a Ludevic, Necro-Alchemist, assuming it's reprinted.

I completely understand supporting an unsupported Tribe. I really do. I would just feel better about it if they decided to do all unsupported Tribes. They specifically said popular Tribes so Cats comes out of nowhere, and in my opinion, there are far more interesting Tribes that are more popular. We do have 23 other Tribes that are more popular, and far more interesting.

This just reminds me of Blizzard announcing Pandaren as the new playable race in Mists of Pandaria. Why take a joke/ridiculous idea and make it reality?

DarkLaw, I definitely get being frustrated because of the selections. There are a lot of cool tribes. What I still don't understand is why they are only doing 4 decks, considering there are a lot of tribes that need support. I honestly was a little disappointed the last tribe wasn't clerics, with some kind of a demon Commander or something.

Sounds like you should ask your group if you can use Westvale Abbey  Flip as your cmdr. Seems like that would scratch that itch

Speculating reasons why these tribes were not picked even though they are most popular.

Zombies - We are having zombie heavy standard deck and just had good zombie commanders such as "Gisa and Geralf" or the "Scarab God".

Goblin, Merfolk - Goblin vs Merfolk is coming out later in November so it would make the later seem stale.

Elf - 2013(?)

Sliver, Angels - They already have solid commanders unlike dragon which just had "Scion of Ur-Dragon"

Wizard, Ally - I thought were having race tribes which would make cleric a betrayal from wotc.

Not including those listed, Cat isn't really far off top.

And with Cat being GW, Vampire possibly RB or WRB, Last one will have blue and with race(?) being the theme not profession, I would think it has to be spirit. While with the leaked image ppl are speculating clerics but it's not inline and we had 2 partner cleric commanders from last year. And elemental are more leaned to RG so with blue heavy choice without merfolk in the picture it, should really be spirit or faries but I guess wotc could just give us the bird

iAzire I guess it kinda represents popularity(?) but i hope this helps

sad_hatter You claim that Angels have a solid Commander, I have to question which card/cards you are talking about.

The overall speculation tends to agree that the last deck is Wizards. That goes against staying with Race Tribes.

I agree with most of your assessments, although we still need an Esper Zombie Commander. Allies I think are good enough with General Tazri.

Faeries, Spirits, even a different Treefolk Commander from Doran, the Siege Tower would have been nice. I mean if we're going Cats, let's go Treefolk lol.

Well Wizards are definitely confirmed as the 4th tribe of C17 according to the Magic podcast from the Mothership today. Can't wait to see Edgar Markov!

iAzire Sapling of Colfenor. Underrated treefolk commander. It can even carry a Worldslayer.

Maybe Wizards printed the cat tribal deck as an answer to the Relentless Rats decks running rampant in the format.

Now, rat tribal is something I'd like to see. It actually does something other than play small creature get some vanilla tokens yada yada.

Like, at least G/R has some Hasty creatures. At least Trostani decks make Eldrazi tokens. Meanwhile, cat decks just make a few 2/2s with lifelink. Yawn. Maybe some cards in the precon will change my mind, but I'd be amazed if they managed to do that.

Aztraeuz says... #15

Lifelinking Cats going on a rampage? I guess we'll need a Sorin Markov to keep them in check. At least he fits with one of the Tribes. That would be a nice surprise reprint in a Precon. I seriously doubt it, but it would be cool.

DarkLaw says... #16

I'd love a Sorin reprint of any kind (except probably Grim Nemesis), but it isn't happening. Particularly with the original, it's the kind of thing that Wizards would stick in a Modern Masters or something - even though it's actually an EDH staple.

Then again, they did stick Daretti in the artifact deck last year, much to my shock.

Actually, I'm most concerned that they'll short print the decks like last year. The Breya and Atraxa decks have no business being $60 and $100. If they don't print enough and continue the quality set by last year's precons, it will just happen again.

By the way, when roughly does spoiler season start?

August 3, 2017 2:13 a.m.

SteelSentry says... #17

I believe spoiler season is next week, but there will be a series of story podcasts about each tribe weekly (the vampire one just dropped, they talk about vamps throughout Magic and especially Markov)

August 3, 2017 2:55 a.m.

Aztraeuz says... #18

Spoiler season starts right on normal schedule. Just check how early each other set is officially spoiled, check the official release date, and that gives you spoiler season.

People have been saying August 7th since forever as that fits the normal schedule. We have received official announcement that spoiler season starts on the 7th.

So Monday.

Wish they'd waited for a Naya Cat Legend, without Red, cats may as well be declawed. That aside, they are a fun and worthy tribe with a deep history and fully deserving of resurrection. Goblins, Vamps, Wizards, etc., are already well fleshed out, maybe Gremlins could use a Commander.

Ir0nI Arahbo has been available on xmage since yesterday and I have played several games until now...it's ridiculously strong imo, already managed one turn 2(!) kill, a few turn 3 kills and frequently the games end on turn 5. That was where I wanted the deck to go and I was honestly surprised that I managed to build it in such a short time and that it actually worked as planned. I even made Screenshots of the most ridiculous early game kills. I really don't miss any third colour in cat aggro, it's cool in GW
