Let's talk JOU.

What cards impress you so far? What seems overhyped? Are there any cards you can't wait to get your hands on?

ChiefBell says... #1

Now I saw the new spoilers. And I'm all like 'ooooh preetty land', 'oooooh pretty enchantment'. Wow so power, much diversity, such interest.

nighthawk101 says... #2

My personal favorites are Keranos, God of Storms , Gnarled Scarhide , Dictate of Kruphix , Hall of Triumph , and Ajani, Mentor of Heroes .

Mana Confluence is just puzzling. Why would Wizards EVER WANT TO PRINT ANOTHER, BETTER City of Brass ???

And Sigiled Starfish. You can't forget him. Or her. (Googles "starfish gender," is surprised)

nighthawk101 says... #3

More, because I was too lazy to post these in my first post: Godsend , Kiora's Dismissal , and Dictate of Karametra .

Sage of Hours is combo-tastic. There are something like ten different combos, but a lot of them use RtR.

I want Hypnotic Siren to see Standard play... but it probably won't.

But what I want to see most of all? CENTAUR TRIBAL, with Pheres-Band Warchief.

Pheres-Band Warchief (3)(G)

Creature - Centaur Warrior

Vigilance, trample

Other Centaur creatures you control get +1/+1 and have vigilance and trample.

3/3

ChiefBell I saw the land just now this morning and my immediate thought was "oh neat, City of Brass for my sliver EDH and Karametra's dictate for my Omnath, Locus of Mana (which might be morphed into simic Kruphix.)

Wizards you have spoilt us lowly EDH players!

The name Gnarled Scarhide just makes me think gnarlicide.

April 11, 2014 7:49 a.m.

Schuesseled says... #7

I reckon city of brass 2.0 will see a lot of standard play once shocks rotate. Might even see play immediately with MuD and monoblack to help play cards exiled by their spectres.

April 11, 2014 8:07 a.m.

ChiefBell says... #8

There's almost no reason to NOT use it really. Unfortunately I believe it will also power up esper control.

April 11, 2014 8:18 a.m.

Rasta_Viking29 says... #9

It powers up everyone.

Boros Aggro can play silly curves now, very scary. That's usually the one thing holding it back.

Any Midrange or Control deck can run 3 or more colors while giving less concern to mana restrictions.

EBay bids are at $12 a card right now, seems reasonable.

Dig out your Burning Earth playset red mages.

KrosanTusker says... #10

My first impression of the set? Scryfish is cool and I want a playmat of Kruphix's art or that of Dictate of Kruphix .

And, guys, Gnarled Scarhide in mono-B aggro? Pfft. Gnarled Scarhide in R/B minotaurs is what it's about!

April 11, 2014 9:55 a.m.

ill probably be running Mana Confluence in my Grixis deck. It helps out so much. Obviously the life loss sucks, but I think in most cases, the fixing iss more important

April 11, 2014 10:42 a.m.

Game Day Promo is amazing.

April 11, 2014 10:51 a.m.

KrosanTusker says... #13

I WANT IT!

April 11, 2014 12:40 p.m.

So far Iroas, God of Victory , Godsend , Ajani, Mentor of Heroes , and Launch the Fleet . Have impressed me the most. I'm liking this set a lot right now, and seems a big step up from Born of the Gods.

April 11, 2014 1:47 p.m.

SilentArbiter says... #15

Have you guys seen Mana confluence. Amazing a functional reprint of city of brass that is actually better because you don't lose life if it is tapped by your opponents.

T:Pay 1 life Add one mana of any color to your mana pool

Does not come into play tapped

pretty impressive

April 11, 2014 2:14 p.m.

Yeah there is like 3 separate threads for it.

April 11, 2014 2:52 p.m.

City of brass 2.0 chase rare for this set you guys think? At least, from what we've seen? I think so. I know I'll want at least 4, 5 for my EDH decks.

April 11, 2014 5:58 p.m.

Dalektable says... #18

I am absolutely in love with this set, such a nice follow up to the "meh" ness that was Born of the Gods.

April 11, 2014 6:01 p.m.

Crymson says... #19

I'm enjoying what I am seeing so far. Ajani, Eidolon of Blossoms, Mana Confulence and both gods are all good cards.

April 11, 2014 8:32 p.m.

So far I'm liking what I'm seeing. My 5 favorites so far as of 4/11/14 are:

Ajani, Mentor of Heroes

Iroas, God of Victory

Dictate of the Twin Gods

Mana Confluence

Launch the Fleet

I think the most over-hyped cards are:

Godsend

Keranos, God of Storms

Aelenium says... #21

Godsend is by far my new favorite artifact.

April 11, 2014 10:12 p.m.

APPLE01DOJ says... #22

Ajani, Mentor of Heroes is going to be a sweet flavor card in my G/W deck. I was hoping Karametra, God of Harvests would be.

Godsend will be sick in standard as far as fun goes. Will wait til price chills then pick 1 up.

My Golgari deck is getting it's Scry temple & God. I hope the god is somewhat useful with a CMC of 4. Would love some more G/B cards in this set.

Orzhov cards have some awesome artwork this go around.

Gnarled Scarhide is awesome just cause it's a 2/1 1-drop. Artwork is a plus.

Way better than BTG.

The whole THS-Block was a pretty huge disappointment. Standard is as boring as never before (at least I haven't seen such a boring Standard in a long time), everyone is playing medicore cards like Frostburn Weird and Nightveil Specter to get devotion. God how much do I hate this mechanic...

The overall power-level of the whole THS-block has been weak so far. No stand-out cards for Modern and/or Legacy (no, reprinting Thoughtseize does not count).

The things they revealed from JOU so far are not that exciting tbh. The new Ajani is krap (but therefore fits Standard perfectly), all the Gods (big and small ones) have been majorly disappointing (aside from Thassa, she kicks ass) so far. I had really high hopes for Keranos and yet they make him a 5-mana sorcery with no immediate impact on the board (yeah well, fits Standard perfectly I think...).

I really like the new 2/1 one-drop for black. Seems like Mono-Black Aggro get's some more punching power.

Ajani just dies to Skullcrack

I'm laughing my ass off since he was spoiled.

April 12, 2014 1:54 p.m.

EKGwins says... #25

Uhh TexasDice, I'm not sure where you got the math for that one. 5-3 is 2. If you mean his ult then whoever is playing him won't be using him right.

April 12, 2014 1:59 p.m.

TexasDice says... #26

Of course I meant the ultimate. It's not a very likely situation, but it would surely qualify for the best possible blowout in Theros standard.

April 12, 2014 2:07 p.m.

TheOne4221 says... #27

Simic ramping has become much more viable with Kruphix's interactions with the cards related to it.

Also Hydra Broodmaster. That thing will be nuts.

I'm just so happy for the new athreos! if you haven't seen him, you aren't magicking hard enough but here is a link.

http://mythicspoiler.com/nyx/cards/athreosgodofpassage.html.

he just fits so perfectly into my enchantment aggro deck Suck my enchantments that i cant wait until that card is put into this site so i can put him in my deck.

who else loves them some athreos?

April 12, 2014 4 p.m.

ChiefBell says... #29

All of the enchantments on the creature would still die. I feel him more in midrange.

April 12, 2014 4:03 p.m.

CaveShinobi says... #30

Athreos, God of Passage is the card I'm the most hyped for in this entire set. I hope to get at least 1 in the prerelease events, since I can already see that it'll be prohibitively expensive in the first couple weeks.

Iroas, God of Victory is also a neat card. King Macar, the Gold-Cursed is pretty awesome, too, but won't see play unless it's in a deck with lots of decent tapping/untapping engines, which I find unlikely to happen. Gnarled Scarhide is one of my favourite cards in the set, since it does everything you'd want in an aggro deck - makes you creatures more aggressive or clears blockers. I like Setessan Tactics as well. A great way to trigger both Heroic and Inspired which can become removal. Eidolon of Blossoms is nice, but I don't think there'll be any deck with decent support to run it, not to mention it's a 2/2 for 4 mana.

I'm not too excited for Godsend . It WILL see play, of that I have no doubts. But it just doesn't move me all that much, really.

Ajani, Mentor of Heroes is pretty neat. I don't get why so many people are hating on it for its bad ultimate, really. Sure, it's 5 mana, but Ajani can either pump your creatures with THREE counters or draw you a card. Now tell me you don't want repeatable pump/draw. Especially when the draw gets you creatures, enchantments and planeswalkers. Will definitely play in Bant Walkers, might see play in Selesnya/Naya Hexproof.

April 12, 2014 7:27 p.m.

UpsetYoMama says... #31

Agreed. I'm thinking Orzhov midrange will be best for Athreos. I'm also thinking about splashing white into monoblack devotion. I like the combination of Athreos, God of Passage with different cards like Pack Rat and Gray Merchant of Asphodel . I mean, think about blocking with the original pack rat and it dieing. Does your opponent want to lose 3 life or give you another 2 drop rat back?

Overall, I am hesitant about this set. There are some decent card reveals, but most of them are more interesting for commander than standard. Gnarled Scarhide makes me very happy because now my Minotaur deck is more viable, and Mana Confluence will find a happy home in my Esper control deck. Underworld Coinsmith is also nice, and I feel that paired with underrated cards like Herald of Torment it will be powerful.

Blakkhand says... #32

The new enchantress seems sweet. I like drawing cards.

April 12, 2014 7:37 p.m.

tman007 says... #33

My favorite is Keranos, God of Storms and Dictate of the Twin Gods . Keranos, God of Storms will be dirty in America control and Dictate of the Twin Gods is super fun with Boros Reckoner . I think Athreos, God of Passage is a great card, but over hyped in a Voltron deck because the auras leave anyway. All in all, I think this set is great, especially compared to BotG. I may buy a box, something I have never done before.

April 12, 2014 8:24 p.m.

trousseau11 says... #34

Athreos, God of Passage is such a fun and different card. I am super stoked for all of the shenanigans.

Athreos says NO to Supreme Verdict !

April 13, 2014 1:21 a.m.

I just have to say quickly, and I know there's probably a better place to say this, but It's really bugging me and this place seems pretty close, but Dictate of Kruphix is listed as having the casting cost 1BB in the system and in the colour pie chart in the deckbuilding section.

April 13, 2014 5:14 a.m.

ChiefBell says... #36

Submitted a fix CalmingRespirator :)

April 13, 2014 6:04 a.m.

Egann says... #37

Godsend ...yikes. It's a bit mana expensive for both cast and equip, but wow. Azorius control is going to be unstoppable with that.

Keranos, God of Storms is probably a better compromise between R and U than his cousin card, Melek, Izzet Paragon . Melek forces you to reveal everything you draw, which undermines half the point of running blue: your opponent doesn't know you have an instant. Now at least you get decent mileage for revealing a card and if you have a way to draw more cards you don't have to reveal them.

Other than that, as with all expansions there's some great cards and some WTF stuff.

I love the Ritual of the Returned. You really have to dig the zombies of theros and their misery.

I wish Theros had more flavor cards like this. Remember Innistrad? That sets design is brilliant...

April 13, 2014 5:01 p.m.

scottemery says... #39

Dakra Mystic is the card I'm looking forward to playing the most, well under hyped. Overall I am liking the new set greatly, a lot of strong, playable and format defining cards.

April 13, 2014 6:40 p.m.

Dritz says... #40

In what should be a surprise to no-one I'm looking forward to playing Iroas, God of Victory . I'm also a fan of the idea of dropping Dictate of the Twin Gods on the turn after, mid-combat, to punish people not working to block the middling dorks and such. It also seems fun to just drop it first main if you need the devotion for Iroas to come swinging in. Good times may be had there.

I am really hoping that a new WW or RW two drop gets printed that is along the power level of Precinct Captain or Fleecemane Lion as I feel like they still are being too blah about actually giving aggro a truly reasonable shot considering the obscene amount of removal that sees play right now.

Also, I'm still sad that Legion's Initiative never got enough support to make up for its somewhat obnoxious combination of abilities. I'll likely still try to make it work but it is terribly hard to justify playing a variety of things when there are few worthwhile ETBs in red, but, you don't want to play a ton of white creatures. This is further compounded by Iroas, God of Victory preventing damage (making the +0/+1 not amazing) and Brimaz, King of Oreskos and Precinct Captain both making tokens which don't like the mass bounce on the Initiative.

April 13, 2014 7:37 p.m.

Korombos says... #41

ooooo Dritz , Legion's Initiative looks like it might go very well with the new constellation cards like Forgeborn Oreads . Maybe a monowhite one will gel perfectly.

April 13, 2014 7:48 p.m.

Ohthenoises says... #42

Dritz Want a good one with Twin Gods? Boros Reckoner + Boros Charm + Dictate of the Twin Gods = Instant death.

You keep redirecting the damage back to the reckoner just like you would for the infinite life combo and then you finally direct it back at the other player for lethal.

Best part is, it's instant speed so you can respond to someone blocking.

April 13, 2014 7:53 p.m.

Dritz says... #43

@Korombos

Yeah, I'm really hoping that the rare versions of Constellation in R and W are worth playing. I am hoping that they are roughly on the 'coolness' factor of Eidolon of Blossoms at the least, that would make me quite happy. haha

@Ohthenoises

Ah, I'm hoping that there will be a reasonable aggro list that wouldn't mind curving out at 5 or that there is a good R/W midrange list that would like to curve into Aurelia, the Warleader (yet another card that I like but is overshadowed by so many things. haha) so that I can play that fun old shenanigans. Hell, it would be amusing to just go full 'Murica about it just to play as many infinite combos in an aggro/midrange shell as I could get away with. It likely would not be competitive but it would be amusing, regardless. haha

April 13, 2014 8:02 p.m.

GGtop says... #44

Um... HELLO!!! King Macar, the Gold-Cursed is the most OP black card i have seen since Dark Confidant !

April 13, 2014 8:16 p.m.

Inspired's whole implied clause of "You have to wait 2 turns to use this effect" really limit it though.... I'd love to see a mana dork with inspired though.

April 13, 2014 8:33 p.m.

UpsetYoMama says... #46

@GGtop Completely disagree with you on that one. King Macar, the Gold-Cursed is nice, but costs 4 and has to become tapped and untapped. So you either have to attack with him and survive (and he doesn't have haste) or build something around him to tap and untap him. Dark Confidant is cheap to cast and its effect automatically triggers.

I don't think it will see play in standard, although it would be fun to abuse in EDH. I do like the flavor of the card, though.

April 13, 2014 10:16 p.m.

miracleHat says... #47

@GGtop, have you seen what Griselbrand does?

April 13, 2014 10:22 p.m.

2 hours till Pharika is spoiled hopefully. Fingers crossed she's playable in standard.

April 13, 2014 10:25 p.m.

Grimaldii says... #49

I really like the idea of King Macar, the Gold-Cursed as some sort of bizarre ramping mono-black edh general, with loads of untapping effects.

April 13, 2014 10:49 p.m.

Im thinking Athreos, God of Passage will see a ton of play. he is really good. I have already built a shell for him. He is in the perfect colors for his ability. im thinking orzhov humans with Xathrid Necromancer and Cartel Aristocrat to really abuse the field. the aristocrats also have the unique ability to sac creatures and shut off devotion to deal with targeted creature removal like Silence the Believers and what not
