Deathbringer Dragonlord doesn't impress me so much, I mean maybe if your playing Abzan Tokens with Ramp it's a boardwipe but 7 Mana for a boardwipe that's more situational than Extinguish All Hope AND costs more, no thank you.

Dr_Jay says... #3

"Deathbringer Dragonlord"

5

Creature - Dragon

Flying

When [Cardname] enters the battlefield, if you cast it from your hand and there are 5 or more creatures on the battlefield, destroy all other creatures.

Seems fun, and could be good at stopping some token strategies in DTK-FRF-KTK Drafts!

March 1, 2015 1:23 p.m.

DMR says... #4

So we have our first spoiler, Dragonlord's Reaper. 5BB for a 5/6 body and if you cast it from your hand, and there are at least 5 other creatures on the battlefield, destroy all other creatures. What do you guys think? Seems a little too expensive for my tastes, but it can be a major bomb in limited.

March 1, 2015 1:23 p.m.

Dr_Jay says... #5

DMR Don't you mean [Deathbringer Dragonlord]?

March 1, 2015 1:26 p.m.

KillDatBUG says... #6

That card is almost certainly a Limited bomb- It costs seven mana, and it doesn't always work, but when it does... It's absurd.

March 1, 2015 1:31 p.m.

AwesomeSean says... #7

What do people think Stratus Dancer is?

March 1, 2015 1:31 p.m.

DMR says... #8

Oops yeah haha, don't know where I got that other name from lol

March 1, 2015 1:31 p.m.

kyuuri117 says... #9

I think it's going to be a limited bomb and nothing else. It's not at all useful for control, and both midrange and control would rather pay an extra mana for Ugin. Unless colorless creatures with morph and manafest become a big annoyance, I can't see this seeing play in any Standard deck.

March 1, 2015 1:34 p.m.

ChiefBell says... #10

Uhhhh EDH?

March 1, 2015 1:36 p.m.

The_Raven says... #11

Wait.... Isn't that card really good in control? Board wipe and finisher? Yes please?

March 1, 2015 1:42 p.m.

ChiefBell says... #12

No hexproof unfortunately.

kyuuri117 says... #14

If you are playing control and your opponent has five creatures on board, somethings gone horribly wrong. And i'd much rather spend five mana to crux and hold up a disdainful stroke, nullify or negate. It just isn't efficient enough for UB control.

I mean, yea, it's fine in EDH. But I feel like saying "It's good in EDH" works for just about every other card ever printed.

March 1, 2015 1:59 p.m.

ChiefBell says... #15

Uhh it's fairly efficient. Board clear for 4 mana and then you get a 5/6 flier for 3 mana. Like that's really quite good in terms of efficiency.

March 1, 2015 2:01 p.m.

slovakattack says... #16

ChiefBell: My friend runs Marchesa EDH, and he's salivating over that card.

March 1, 2015 2:03 p.m.

kyuuri117 says... #17

The abilities taken by themselves are efficient. But they aren't by themselves, they are on a seven mana card. There is a bit of a difference there.

Think of it this way, what are you even going to use it on?

Abzan aggro, midrange and control don't load creatures on the board. They have 2-3 at most, other than Elspeth. If you play this against an elspeth, it just dies next turn anyway from the elspeth

Against Mardu, you are most likely going to be playing it into goblin tokens and a rabblemaster. At which point, if it's gotten to that, you are definitely under 10 life. You top this, and they just toss a couple of stokes at you.

Against Jeskai aggro, you are dead before turn seven if you don't clear the creatures. If you do, you don't get the wrath from the dragon.

Against Jeskai ascendency combo, this might be useful if you aren't dead

Against sultai control, well, they don't even have creatures other than wayfinder and a tasigur.

Against U/B control, it's just dead.

Against R/W aggro, well, this would probably be the best deck for the dragon to fight against with their brimaz and rabblemasters. But still, if you aren't dead to them and they have that many creatures out, you are probably in stoke range and probably dead if you drop the dragon.

Whatelse... ah, U/W heroic. Yea, dragon's no use here.

Probably missed some fringe decks but the point is, the dragon is not good at all against the current standard meta. Now, obviously it's going to change a bit with the release of DTK. But the general idea stays the same.

Go ahead and sleeve up a proxy and test it, but I seriously doubt it's going to be good.

March 1, 2015 2:25 p.m.

ChiefBell says... #18

This is in no way playable in standard. I never claimed it was. I was talking about EDH.

March 1, 2015 2:26 p.m.

kyuuri117 says... #19

I forgot G/R Midrange. I can see this being good against that to a point, but you still have to deal with Whisperwood Elemental at that point.

March 1, 2015 2:27 p.m.

kyuuri117 says... #20

Oh. Well, yea, my mistake then. It's fine in edh. I was saying that it's cost to efficiency rate is terrible in standard.

March 1, 2015 2:27 p.m.

JohnnyBaggins says... #21

If you're plying UB control and the opponent is willing to overcommit that much that Dragonlord works, you should win anyways. Yes, in my eyes, five creatures on the board are overcommit against control.
It's a brutal bomb in Limited, though. MAN DO I LOVE THIS CARD IN LIMITED.

March 1, 2015 2:33 p.m.

shinobigarth says... #22

Makes me wonder if we'll see any kind of Dragonspeaker Shaman guy, since this is gonna be so dragon heavy. Like a similar guy but 0/2 instead, or an enchantment this time.

March 1, 2015 3:16 p.m.

Schuesseled says... #23

@slovakattack why, he only wipes when he is cast. Better cards for marchesa

March 1, 2015 3:54 p.m.

slovakattack says... #24

It's easy to abuse as a repeatable beater, and the nature of it's wipe can make it really one-sided in a Marchesa deck.

March 1, 2015 3:57 p.m.

Goody says... #25

It'll see Standard play, if not this rotation, then the next. Remember, only KTK and FTR are rotating at first

March 1, 2015 4:04 p.m.

Dracoson says... #26

I do like the indication of where it suggests the dragons are going, even if I'm fairly unimpressed with this initial offering. We're going from allied colored rares with monocolored uncommons to monocolored rares. Maybe even with enemy color uncommons (though, I suspect)? Hopefully the ETB effects of the others are more impressive or less restrictive.

March 1, 2015 4:28 p.m.

Jay says... #27

I don't think this will see EDH play at all. Dread Cacodemon and Reiver Demon are better. Sure, more mana, but better in most cases anyway.

March 1, 2015 4:47 p.m.

ZooGambler says... #28

I'm excited for dragons! I hope they make some good bolster creatures, so I can make a return on my high sentinels of arashin

March 1, 2015 4:48 p.m.

cjk191997 says... #29

Well I'm sure there is something good in this set but only this one dragon im not impressed

March 1, 2015 6:05 p.m.

Well, the Dragonlord could be quite good in a UB control deck, because they can play it when Bile Blight isn't enough and get a big body. and they can have countermagic up. Could be another win con...?

March 1, 2015 6:18 p.m.

Kryzis says... #31

I feel that this card will go into Scion of the Ur-Dragon decks. If on turn 6, your opponent is a Krenko, Mob Boss and has 30 Goblin tokens out, this would be a very reasonable pull.

March 1, 2015 6:25 p.m.

JWiley129 says... #32

Kryzis - That won't work as Scion of the Ur-Dragon wouldn't have ETB'd or been cast from the hand to trigger the ETB effect. I would still run it, but it's not as good as you imply.

March 1, 2015 6:33 p.m.

Asher18 says... #33

I really hope that Narset, Enlightened Master is a walker this set; we still need two more to get the "5 per block" thing

March 1, 2015 6:51 p.m.

Kryzis says... #34

Oh yeah, my bad.

March 1, 2015 6:57 p.m.

ceji3 says... #35

IDk how the dragonlord will see play in standard. It does a number against tokens but is insanely weak to like everything else.

March 1, 2015 7:18 p.m.

Kingzerker says... #36

Best case scenario it would've been a sideboard card in Sidisi Whip to break up the mirror match. However, that "if it was cast from your hand" clause all but ruins its playability in standard. At least for the near future, cause then again who knows what'll happen to the meta after rotation.

March 1, 2015 8:41 p.m.

shepherdofire says... #37

Taigam will be the "human leader/underling" for the jeskai and narset will be a walker

March 1, 2015 9 p.m.

jr92_2000 says... #38

It's the gameday rare, so it's no surprise that the card is bad. It might even be too slow/conditional for draft (it's certainly a prerelease bomb though).

March 1, 2015 9:37 p.m.

jr92_2000 says... #39

Sorry, I meant launch promo.

March 1, 2015 9:38 p.m.

shepherdofire says... #40

Can we drop talk on the Buzz kill of a Dragon and move on to speculation.

March 1, 2015 9:40 p.m.

cr14mson says... #41

why speculate when you have real cards starting to get spoiled?

March 1, 2015 10:23 p.m.

Asher18 says... #42

Narset walker

AHEM

three color Narset walker

March 1, 2015 10:25 p.m.

shepherdofire says... #43

Because the card that is out sucks.

March 1, 2015 10:25 p.m.

shepherdofire says... #44

And no. three color walker, no. It will have to fit within the broods. Ex Jeskai = Auzorious.

March 1, 2015 10:27 p.m.

HolyFalcon says... #45

Jump on the hype train everyone, spoilers are due tomorrow.

March 1, 2015 10:37 p.m.

AussieBloke says... #46

I was reading the new Uncharted Realms thing and saw that Narset was kicked out of the Jeskai for being a heretic, so maybe she does have a splash of red in her. Also, can we all take a minute to laugh at Zurgo, Helmsmasher in this timeline, Zurgo, Bell Ringer. Ha!

March 1, 2015 10:42 p.m.

shepherdofire says... #47

Yeah and he's not jacked like before lol

March 1, 2015 10:45 p.m.

Drathen says... #48

Not sure why people get all excited about the Dragonlord? I mean yes, its good in limited, but limited are usually lesser versions of what standard staples would be.

March 1, 2015 10:54 p.m.

mathimus55 says... #49

Because a good draft format is what is going to keep making Wizards money beyond the first few weeks of a set being out. The better a draft format is the more it will get drafted and it's worth it to make sure that evironment is fun. Plus not every rare needs to be a standard all star. That's why they have several sets to make up standard not just one.

March 2, 2015 12:19 a.m.

JakeHarlow says... #50

I'm sure the Narset walker will have some red in her. She has a strong fellowship (even a sort-of romance?) with Sarkhan, and I imagine that their connection to was at least part of that.

Hell, she could even be ...Deflecting Palm depicts her, after all.
