ceji3 I doubt a deck that is trying to cast , , & spells will be viable. Sultai has superior mana, Sultai Charm covers a lot of holes for , and the splash for is minor.
A based deck will benefit from a or splash more than . We do have a lot of cards to still see though.

I'd say Kill, Mill, Discard, Bounce is most likely for the UB Command.
I'm 100% Esper Control will be a thing. Or UW Control will be viable again. And I'm so looking forward to eventually being the control douche in my playgroup. The mana base will be painfully expensive, but oh well.
TheDuggernaught, yep, it has a strong Sphinx feeling to it, but dicarding is something entirely different than casting spells. Still, viable. I don't see it being played in Esper Control, simply because Silumgar from FRF seems to be the much better Control-Card, but oh my, a very viable card for UW control.
I like a lot of what we've seen so far and I'm excited for even more of that stuff. My hope of Ojutai being a possible UW control option might turn true. I mean, So far, Stratus Dancer, Ojutai's Command and Pristine Skywise read pretty damn controlling.

I just HAVE to do at least three Prerelease Events. HAVE to. In absolutely mandatory, if I want to play the RG, the UW and the UB box. Maybe I'll just do all five. Who needs money and sleep anyways, right? Right?
March 3, 2015 6:14 p.m.
Rasta_Viking29- It is perfectly viable and proper mana fixing makes it easy. You get access to both Polluted Delta and Flooded Strand which are great for color fixing and delve. It would have a more painful mana base with fetches, but it should run consistent enough with scrying as well. However, without green it does lose a lot of spells such as Satyr Wayfinder which help with fixing. Either way, both decks will be effective.
On a different note, does anyone else find some fun in basically doing the stock market exchange? Purchase low value cards right now, after seeing spoilers, and before people see its potential, and then trade them away when they are expensive? That to me is fun. I snagged 4x Keranos at 6 bucks each and traded them for 80+. got me about 60 dollars profit in trade value.

A guy at my shop bought ten Tasigurs when they were 1 Euro. He's still laughing hysterically once in a while when he plays one of the two he kept for his Sidisi Whip deck. Yep, the MtG Stock Market is a hell lot of fun, but I'm not really good at these anticipations because my weird mind wants cards to be good that eventually aren't really.

I think Jund dragons is definitely viable for standard. Come on! Just read thunderbreak regent. The whole set isn't even spoiled, and a lot of the new dragons are sweet. I hope this set is as good as Khans was.

Ojutai's Command is sweeeet. Where Cryptic is at worst Fog draw a card, this card is at worst Rest for the Weary draw a card. At best, Cryptic is Counterspell + Time Walk, where this card at best is Counterspell + Snapcaster Mage + whatever. I'm going to play it. :)
March 3, 2015 6:23 p.m.
Uhhhh but cryptic is at its best and worst on T4, this is only at its best when you have leftover mana for flashback AND snap caster. Which is far more situational and almost useless against those faster decks. Also this isn't counterspell bro - this is essence scatter. MUCH worse.
March 3, 2015 6:24 p.m.
nighthawk101 says... #12
For me at least, the Command would be a lot better if it was Counterspell instead of Essence Scatter. As-is, it's not terrible, but at bit bulky.
Although I am now excited about the prospect of a Dragon Command cycle...

@ChiefBell I'm not saying it's better. It's just sweeeeet.

I wonder if they finally give the tiny leaders their leader for UBG :>
March 3, 2015 6:28 p.m.
you're going to be waiting a while CaptainWoosh. Tiny Leaders JUST became a thing, and with this block being designed two years in the future there is no way for them to design such a card. Plus, I don't think they'd put a non-planeswalker wedge card in an ally set about dragons.
March 3, 2015 6:32 p.m.
I just don't think it's playable in a control shell in modern. Countering a creature spell - 'eh'. Gaining 4 life - 'eh'. Reanimation - sweet but super slow. Draw a card is always good.
March 3, 2015 6:33 p.m.
Isn't if fun when standard has its own cryptic command

Sometimes I realise I'm a Spike and that it makes me dead inside. I haven't had fun since 1992. I was born on 1992.
March 3, 2015 6:35 p.m.
Hey I was born in 1992 as well :D just had to toss that in there lol
March 3, 2015 6:43 p.m.
ChiefBell I don't really think this new UW Command is going to be very modern playable. However, it's kind of what control in the current standard wants. This sorta allows UW Control to drop the nyx rams and just run this. Life gain and cheap answers were the two biggest weaknesses of the deck... and well, this solves the lifegain one while keeping card advantage. All the modes seem useful, and I don't doubt this is gonna see play. At least in standard.
March 3, 2015 6:49 p.m.
im just happy this card will be in standard it makes esper and america both very viable options for control which both makes me happy because i would have fun seeing about a 50/50 split on control and midrange especially if this will change the midrange decks to not just abzan to deal with it
March 3, 2015 7 p.m.
i also want to point out that @ceji3 they dont need to do anything to make abzan more powerful
March 3, 2015 7:06 p.m.
JakeHarlow says... #27
I might be doing this, too. For fun. I still think Abzan and Boros aggro are the top decks.
March 3, 2015 7:48 p.m.
cjk191997- I never said they should. (or did i? Whoops if i did.) I just want more good abzan cards, because playing a deck from pre frf that still out performs frf decks is sad/funny. I would love to see some more of those decent cards tho, and if they print anything that bumps control, then they probably have to print a good abzan bump. I need a decent 3 cmc g/w dragon that i can play against crux.

I hope people are playing a 4 mana Essence Scatter in Standard. It doesn't even interact with the board and for that reason it'll see niche play. Remember how great everyone thought Utter End would be?

kyuuri117 I play UW control life gain and cheap answers were never the problem. It was interacting with what did resolve. This doesn't really solve that imo. Still waiting for that one card that can impact the board cheaply.
March 3, 2015 9:50 p.m.
silumgar command is probably going to be around 5 mana and have something like :
creatures get -2/-2 until end of turn
counter target non-creature spell with cmc 4 or less
target player sacrifices a creature
make a 2/2 zombie creature token

Atarka Command should be like:
- people die
- more people die
- die die die
- you win!
March 4, 2015 12:51 a.m.
Hjaltrohir says... #36
shinobigarth I disagree, I would say:
- people die
- more people die
- die die die
- Target creature gains double strike until end of turn

Holy Kolaghan Dragonlord batman!
"4BR 6/5Flying HasteOther Creatures you control have haste
Whenever an opponent casts a creature or planeswalker spell with the same name as a card in his or her graveyard, that player loses 10 life" (translation from mtg salvation card from genexcomics.com)
March 4, 2015 2:10 a.m.
correction it's "your" graveyard not "his or her" according to google translate.
March 4, 2015 2:14 a.m.
Hjaltrohir says... #40
dan8080 There is lots of argument about it. I would say their graveyard would be better than your but we'll see.
March 4, 2015 2:27 a.m.
nevermind the original translation I gave was right looking at comments from people who speak spanish the context I guess goes the "his or her" route (sorry for the spam just trying to clarify things)

bennybubbles says... #44
Im just gonna say that to all the people who think that you can't have both, you actually can. The legend rule only cares for cards with exactly the same name. Its only the planeswalker rule that cares about subtype
March 4, 2015 2:38 a.m.
Shame Kolaghan mk2 is an EDH flavour fail though, hes still pretty good for the mana, but having half the card be completely useless sucks. It would be better if it were in your graveyard, at least then spot removal etc that you may have played or artifacts would cause people to lose 10. EPIC art though, this tiny disappointment is certainly only a blip on epic spoilers thus far.
March 4, 2015 2:42 a.m.
I'm liking the idea of a potential grixis shell similar to UB control using kolaghan as the crippling finisher.
March 4, 2015 2:47 a.m.
Note: this was called an edh flavor fail. It's not. Mishra is similar rules and he's a very tricky General to play against when done correctly, such as stax.
March 4, 2015 2:51 a.m.
Also, maiden77, it only triggers from creatures and planeswalkers your opponents cast. Spot removal and artifacts don't trigger the last ability so the spot removal and artifacts you had cast would be irrelevant even if it were your graveyard.
March 4, 2015 3:45 a.m.
Souljacker says... #49
I just want to confirm that it's "his/her graveyard" and not your own. The word in question is "su", which translates to his/her.
March 4, 2015 4:12 a.m.
mishra is a combo-ish weird general that accidentally works in EDH with some support, not by design, as it was before the actual EDH support came from Wizards. But generals like Haakon and Phage and now this guy, all have rules that make them a fail for me for EDH, but this guy is a modern legend that could have been tweaked just a little, to not miss the mark. I didn't see the creatures and planeswalkers bit so thats even more narrow, and therefore worse. I just think Kolaghan 1.0 is better, this guy is a disappointment, but because half of him doesn't work in EDH, how is that not a flavour fail?

Am I the only one that actually really likes Pristine Skywing? Feels a bit like Prognostic Sphinx. Yeah, someone can just play another kill spell on top of your spell, but if your spell to give it protection was a draw or kill spell of your own, you still wind up netting card advantage over your opponent... and you are likely playing control. So you can probably win that "storm" battle all day.
