Epochalyptik says... #3

Just trying to cut down on the number of miscellaneous FRF threads. We normally get a flood once spoiler season really begins. Sandsteppe Mastodon already had four or five until I started deleting the newer ones.

December 27, 2014 11:04 p.m.

JWiley129 says... #4

Epochalyptik - does this mean you'll be limiting the "OMG NEW CARD" threads? Or should we just post all about the spoilers here?

December 27, 2014 11:09 p.m.

Epochalyptik says... #5

I won't be hunting down all of the people who post threads in addition to this one, but I will be deleting all extraneous threads (meaning new threads for cards that are already covered here and by their own thread) so as not to clog the forums with redundant discussions.

December 27, 2014 11:15 p.m.

Epochalyptik says... #6

In particular, if people want to discuss the impact a certain card might have in a certain format, that's definitely okay (and would go in that format's forum). But I don't want to see new SRS threads popping up every hour with the same info.

shinobigarth says... #7

is Wizards gonna start dropping the spoilers regularly next week?

December 27, 2014 11:44 p.m.

Osang says... #8

I believe MaRo said that previews start on Monday.

December 27, 2014 11:51 p.m.

JWiley129 says... #9

Aside from the Ugin, Yasova, and Crux of fate, the regularly scheduled spoilers start MONDAY.

Because Valorous Stance and Sandsteppe Mastodon were leaks.

can we get crux of fate added to the site please

Hopefully I will enjoy this spoiler season as much as Khans.

So the Abzan mechanic is Bolster. Right now, we don't know what the other mechanics are, but here are some guesses as to returning ones:

Jeskai: Rebound/Ninjitsu

Mardu: Battle Cry/Bloodthirst

Sultai: Unearth/Retrace

Temur: Provoke/Amplify

More likely/Less likely. Not all of the mechanics will be returning, but we had Delve in Khans, so I wouldn't be sprites if at least one clan mechanic is a returning one.

December 28, 2014 8:36 a.m.

TheHroth says... #14

Jeskai had better have storm cards :3

December 28, 2014 9:47 a.m.

JWiley129 says... #15

nighthawk101 - there are some issues I can see with your predictions, one of which is the Temur mechanics. Amplify is only good in a tribal set, which Khans isnt, and Provoke was replaced by Fight as a way for green to remove specific creatures. There aren't any Ninjas, so ninjutsu doesn't fit the world. And Unearth doesn't feel Sultai, and actively fights Delve.

December 28, 2014 9:50 a.m.

Named_Tawyny says... #16

And I would be surprised if they introduced five new mechanics in a small set. (Although, since all three sets won't be drafted together, it's possible if not plausible)

Pretty sure Storm is a 10 on the Storm scale. ;)

December 28, 2014 9:58 a.m.

JWiley129 says... #17

When the scale is named after you, you better believe it's a 10. Storm, unfortunately, isn't coming back.

December 28, 2014 10:08 a.m.

KrosanTusker says... #18

Rebound, Battle Cry and Bloodthirst sound like decent predictions.

December 28, 2014 11:30 a.m.

raithe000 says... #19

Don't forget this set will rotate and draft independently with both Khans and Dragons of Tarkir. It will also almost certainly have morph, which has been said to be bigger than Khans. Five new mechanics + Morph was hard to fit into Khans, I doubt we'll see it in a small set. I'm betting that we'll see three new mechanics split among all five clans, with morph also returning. They'll also probably be anti-parasitic mechanics, so that they can be drafted with two very different sets, ones that may well not share any mechanics (other than morph).

December 28, 2014 11:39 a.m.

TheHroth says... #20

I know Storm isn't coming back...but I can hope ;p

Maybe Horsemanship can come back xD

December 28, 2014 12:29 p.m.

Named_Tawyny says... #21

I'm pretty sure Horsemanship is an 11. ha.

December 28, 2014 1:31 p.m.

Jay says... #22

I would love to see Retrace, but it doesn't seem like it'll be coming back. It just doesn't feel all that Sultai- it fits the colors, sure, but not their flavor.

December 28, 2014 1:32 p.m.

KrosanTusker says... #23

Retrace seems unlikely on the grounds that it can lead to repetitive gameplay very easily.

December 28, 2014 2:04 p.m.

SpaderAce says... #24

I have a question that I've been confused on since Khans. Is this set gonna have Grixis, Jund, Bant, Esper, and whatever the last one was? Or is it just the 5 clans from Khans? I've been hoping for Grixis for the longest time, am I getting it in Fate or do I have to wait until March?

December 28, 2014 2:14 p.m.

Named_Tawyny says... #25

Honestly? I don't think you're getting it at all this block. But from the spoilers so far (ie Yasova Dragonclaw) it looks certainly not to be going to shards in January.

December 28, 2014 2:21 p.m.

shinobigarth says... #26

Horsemanship didn't test well and serves to add more confusion for new players so I don't think so

December 28, 2014 3:02 p.m.

SpaderAce says... #27

I heard over summer that the final set was gonna be focused on the shards specifically, and I think I heard they were starting it in Fate which is why they were drafting the large sets with Fate, so whichever set you drafted determined which 3 color decks you had access to. Idk if this is right or if that was just someone speculating, but it made sense to me

December 28, 2014 3:48 p.m.

shinobigarth says... #28

SpaderAce perhaps Sarkhan and company's going back in time and changing things effect Tarkir in a way to sort of change up the clans colors at least to some extent so that the shards make some sort of appearance? some of the clans start dabbling in a color they hadn't before the future was changed, like Jeskai dabbled a little in black and so Grixis is their alternate color combo in the new timeline? Temur dabbles in white and gets Naya, etc?

December 28, 2014 4:27 p.m.

Jay says... #29

It would be cool if 4-color schemes existed through hybrid mana. For example, Jeskai went from to and so forth.

It could get confusing as hell, but would be a neat way to show the time travel changes and stuff.

December 28, 2014 4:32 p.m.

KrosanTusker says... #30

To paraphrase innumerable Maro quotations, four-colour is very hard to design because the defining feature of a four-colour card is the lack of something. While obviously we're going to get four-colour legends at some point, that's probably the only four-colour we'll see in a long time. A standard legal set would not be the right place for a four-colour theme.

Also, I don't think we'll transition to shards. That would be insanely complicated and confusing all for one standard environment: Theros pushing monocolour, Khans pushing wedges and Dragons pushing shards? I think perhaps not.

December 28, 2014 4:44 p.m.

shinobigarth says... #31

I'm not saying transition to shards. I'm proposing the clans dabble a tad in another color because the past gets changed. it seems like there should be some kind of "drastic" change happen other than the dragons coming back if only to show how little ripples in time can lead to big changes.

December 28, 2014 5:23 p.m.

nighthawk101 says... #32

JWiley129: I actually started off trying to create new mechanics for each of the clans, but decided to just put possibly returning mechanics instead.

Amplify came from my idea for the Temur mechanic: enhance (As this creature enters the battlefield, you may reveal any number of cards from your hand. It enters the battlefield with a +1/+1 counter on it for each card revealed.) This would power up creatures and thus synergize with Ferocious. I realized that it was similar to Amplify, so that's what I put.

I wasn't aware that Provoke had been removed, and after a quick check it's apparently a 7 on the Storm Scale. So, not totally removed.

Ninjistu was supposed to represent the speed and skill of the Jeskai monks. I didn't even register the ninja part...

Unearth was chosen due to self mill strategies. However, it is different than the Sultai theme of "the graveyard as a resource" so it probably wasn't the best choice.

The only other mechanic that I finished was the Jeskai one: Spellsling (Whenever this creature attacks, the next instant or sorcery spell you cast this turn costs less to cast.)

December 28, 2014 5:24 p.m.

nighthawk101 says... #33

Gah. "Enhance" should be [type]enhance (As this creature enters the battlefield, you may reveal any number of [type] cards from your hand. It enters the battlefield with a +1/+1 counter on it for each card revealed.)

I used angle brackets, which was a bad choice...

December 28, 2014 5:26 p.m.

shinobigarth says... #34

Spellsling sounds cool but would lead to essentially turning Lightning Strike into Lightning Bolt and other brokenness. i like the Jeskai having something similar to Ninjutsu only slightly different and with a different name, but it has something to do with casting non creature spells like Prowess.

December 28, 2014 5:41 p.m.

Just so everyone's aware, FTF is supposed to mark a transition to monocolored cards. It's not going to be the same wedge-oriented setup that characterized KTK. And we aren't getting shards.

December 28, 2014 9:18 p.m.

Hickorysbane says... #36

Jp3ngu1nb0y, that'd be a cool direction for the clans to take. There'd be soo many different colors of decks...like if every guild in Ravnica had been able to be at least mildly competetive AND three color things became viable. It could even make Chromanticore goodstuffs a better deck.

December 28, 2014 9:19 p.m.

AussieBloke says... #37

This discussion is two pages long with no new cards revealed... I know nothin new has come out since Ugin, but this one thread for another 180 cards is gonna get long real quick. Please don't yell at me, I'm just putting it out there.

December 28, 2014 11:25 p.m.

JWiley129 says... #38

AussieBloke - don't you talk to me about numbers! We'll make this thread as long as we damn well please!

Also the M15 thread, once Epoch started it, was around 20-30 pages by spoilers end.

December 28, 2014 11:26 p.m.

shinobigarth says... #39

if it comes to it he can always make a 2nd one easily enough. and since cards will be spoiled in lumps, just put as many of your thoughts about different cards as you can in the same post.

Well, that certainly puts things into perspective. I do apologize for my earlier comment, I tend to be rather blunt when I have a hangover. That and waiting for these dam spoilers is driving me nuts. So, yeah, sorry again, I'll be good, just let me sit quietly over here in the corner and watch.

Karn Liberated is better as it is 7 mana so the tron lands can get it out T3 whereas Ugin would have to be T4.

Femme_Fatale the new spoilers for today were just released.

I can't wait to get the Soulflayer card, it is going to have some insane graveyard interactions with Entomb in the Eternal formats.

I still haven't quite figured out the manifest ability on Whisperwood Elemental yet.

December 29, 2014 11:13 a.m.

golffore297 says... #47

Manifest essentially means you take the top card of your library, no matter what it may be, and put it into play face-down as a 2/2 creature. If you look and see that it is a creature, you can turn it face-up at any time by paying it's mana cost. This means that you can not pay the morph cost if it is a morph creature however, as it does not come into play as a morph, just a face-down 2/2.

December 29, 2014 11:22 a.m.

nighthawk101 says... #48

Well, they went ahead and returned Delve, Ferocious, and Prowess... Don't know why I'm so surprised, it is a small set.

Dash looks pretty interesting, and Manifest looks sweet (Skaab Ruinator or Wren's Run Vanquisher, anyone?).

Also, what's with the watermark on Kolaghan? It looks like Mardu, but it has wings... Probably to signify that it's a Dragon aligned with Mardu.

December 29, 2014 11:22 a.m.

I play Temur, and I was already excited about Yasova. Whisperwood Elemental looks like a really good late-game threat that demands answers immediately! Sort of like Xenagos, the Reveler but a 4/4 body. Just putting a 2/2 out there every turn, and the confusion of not knowing which ones can be flipped or into what. I'm really really excited for Whisperwood and feel like it could be a solid 1-of or maybe even 2-of in my Temur deck.

December 29, 2014 11:29 a.m.

nighthawk101 says... #50

News from the articles:

Talking about Kolaghan: "She's part of a five-card legendary Dragon rare cycle in the ally colors (WU, UB, BR, RG, GW). Each of them has an attack trigger ability that happens whenever a Dragon you control attacks. They trigger themselves, but they also trigger multiple times with multiple attacking Dragons. "

On Delve interaction:

"Verheinous One 9B

CreatureNaga

Delve

If you delved a blue or green card to cast CARDNAME, it enters the battlefield with a +1/+1 counter on it and has hexproof.

4/4

...While this design didn't survive intact, there's something like it in the set!"

On modes: "There are three cycles of modal cards in Fate Reforged that begin "Choose A or B.""

"You've already seen Crux of Fate, which belongs to its own spell cycle."

"The Siege cycle of rare enchantments shows a spectacular battle between a clan and a dragon brood lineage."

Cards that survived mechanically, but not in name:

Maro on mechanic evolution:

"Set 1: The mechanic would just do its thing.Set 2: We could create a proto-version of the mechanic. Something that felt like it existed before the mechanic in Set 1.Set 3: We see the mechanic from Set 1 but not quite the same, because things went a little differently in this timeline.

...The mechanic was, of course, morph...

...After the exploratory team figured out the second set, it then found a way to do something interesting with morph in the third set. It turned out to cause a few problems that later had to get solved in Dragons of Tarkir design, but that's a story for Dragons of Tarkir preview weeks."

More modal cycles: "There's a cycle of creatures that offer you a choice when they enter the battlefield: put a +1/+1 counter on the creature or get some other effect."
