So what do you guys think of that new red card, Treasonous ogre?
3RCreature - Ogre Shaman

Dethrone (Whenever this creature attacks the player with the most life or tied for most life, put a +1/+1 counter on it.)

Pay 3 life: Add R to your mana pool.

"Everything comes with a price. Especially revolution." Grenzo, dungeon warden

2/3

It feels like life for mana hasn't been done in a while, I just feel that his mana cost will keep him from seeing any real play outside of edh. Still a pretty cool card. If Anything it'll keep you from being the target of dethrone cards. :P

Going straight into my Purphoros, God of the Forge EDH deck.

This little guy is going RIGHT in the wife's Mayael deck. It's already based on multiple attack steps.

The big news is that the mana ability isn't a tap ability. Red Ramp that could go really nuts, especially in EDH.

That said, Dethrone is kinda disappointing. It's similar to evolve, but much less consistent. It's dumbing decks down, not slowing them down.

The 3 life = R ability is HUGE.

You have more life than your opponent... pay life... get mana... cast something.
Oh look!!! Your opponent is now at more life than you... Swing... Dethrone trigger creature gets bigger.

You have more life than opponent. Opponent swings with 3-4 Dethrone creatures which all trigger... you pay 3 life, and make your life total go below theirs... their Dethrone abilities check before resolving, and fail because they you no longer have the most life. (similar to Evolve triggering, but not resolving if the Evolve creature gets greater P and T before resolving)

So from this one card you get:
- Red Ramp
- Creature with an ability to make itself bigger (situationally)
- An ability that makes the "situational" ability always occur.
- An ability that can make it so your opponents "Dethrone" can never resolve when attacking you, so his creatures will not get bigger.

@Rayenous I don't thin it would work like your talking about. I'll use Experiment One as an example for evolve. If you notice in the reminder text from evolve it has a special little "if" clause. It's because of that "if" clause that an evolve trigger checks when it triggers and when it resolves. If it just said "whenever another creature with a higher power or toughness enters the battlefield under your control put a +1/+1 counter on this creature" then it would only check when it triggers and would still resolve regardless if the creature that triggered it was now smaller than the evolve creature. If you notice Dethrone doesn't have that nifty little "if" clause. That means it'll trigger every time that creature attacks the person with the most or tied for the most life and will resolve even if that person loses life and is no longer has the most or is tied for the most. Look up Experiment One on the gatherer and read the rulings at the bottom for a little more clarification on what I was saying. You'll see that the two abilities are worded differently and therefore will function differently.

Even if it doesn't work like that... pay the 3 life before combat, so that you're not the one being attacked.

That would fit nice in my Xenagos, God of Revels EDH
