Apparently there was a leak, so wizards put out the release notes for the set early - link to the notes on bottom of linked article
Please discuss
Interesting set, with lots of fun/interesting commander cards.
Since this was actually released by wizards, it is no longer considered a leak.
We've already been there this season with Grixis Control, God-Pharaoh's Gift, and Approach decks.
Creature Control will also be tough to beat with cards like:
- Angel of Condemnation
- Angel of Sanctions
- Blossoming Defense
- Cast Out
- Heroic Intervention
- Ixalan's Binding
- Seal Away
- Thopter Arest
and some of the other new Angels.
Esper Control was huge during BFZ, with the fetch lands and Languish in the format.
Not to mention Dragonlord Ojutai, and Silumgar, the Drifting Death.
April 5, 2018 11:46 a.m. Edited.
That's true, the Simulgar/Ojutai decks were strong and were hard to play around in much the same way.
I still don't see how mid-rangey decks can hope to beat Second Sun. Come T7, if you're not going to counter it, you have maybe two turns to win, and they're just Fumigateing and drawing cards.
It's possible that there's a strategy with hand disruption and cards like Gideon's Intervention to prevent them casting Second Sun. Of course, they can remove it with Cast Out, and counter both these things...
Obviously, if they are all-in on that single win condition, it is beatable with a deck entirely focused on this match up... but that's not the kind of deck I want to play, and it's not a creative deck building exercise for me.
I see these sweet Jeskai wizardy decks and can't see them being playable without half the cards being counterspells.

I've just this moment finished testing my new Jhoira's Crew deck against Approach of the Second Sun, and it's been doing extremely well.
That's mostly because Vehicles don't give a shit about Fumigate, and there are too many Creatures hitting the field to Control them all.

I want to make deck around jodah that is 5 colors and is mostly bombs.
April 5, 2018 1:14 p.m.
Radha's latest incarnation. I feel like she's the best R/G tokens general there is, so I build around her The Warlord's Thunder. Goes infinite with Aggravated Assault and Hellkite Charger too.
And... Show
April 5, 2018 4:52 p.m.
Wizards, I see what you're doing.
Make us fall in love with Dominaria Legendaries.

I can't say I agree with classifying Rada as the "best" R/G token general, but she is definitely very powerful and looks like a fun build around commander.
Control is looking stronger day-by-day:
Also, this looks like a fun, big dumb finisher:
April 5, 2018 8:31 p.m.
In the new art for Unwind, Jhoira looks like Deborah from the show Everybody Loves Ray.
April 6, 2018 6:24 a.m.
I don't see that being the choice.
It's more how many copies of Essence Scatter, and how many copies of Unwind.
Correct answer?
3x Essence Scatter Mainboard, 3x Unwind Sideboard.

The thing is that my meta is very Control-Heavy. That may change post-Dominaria, but we will see

Wait...is this card depicting the rebirth of all of the Primeval Dragons? It isn't a saga so the art isn't representing events from the past. Does this mean we might see reprints of the others besides Darigaaz down the road? Be still, my beating heart.
April 6, 2018 10:36 a.m.
You should win the game if you use it to bring back he original Primevals. I just might build Dragon Tribal once more to accomplish the goal.
April 6, 2018 11 a.m.
Someone, somewhere, is going to take this and eight zombie knight tokens and alter them to be the Nazgul. plays the appropriate theme when the deck comes out
April 6, 2018 12:33 p.m. Edited.
Doesn't Zombie Tribal have enough support already? Would it be too much to ask for a Skeleton that's not restless drudges of unworthiness with an ability tacked on?
I just reviewed the release notes, and remembered that they removed regenerate. Drudge Sentinels is the new Skeleton. Its ability is overpriced fake regenerate. So yeah, it's too much to ask.
I won't rant any more here, but this annoys me.
April 6, 2018 2:01 p.m.
I enjoy a good rant.
Particularly a pithy one.
"restless drudges of unworthiness"
lol

Thanks much, Hi_diddly_ho_neighbor!
OH WOW OH WOW OH WOW!
Yeah, that's definitely them ... from left to right it's Treva, the Renewer, Rith, the Awakener, Darigaaz, the Igniter/Darigaaz Reincarnated, Crosis, the Purger, and Dromar, the Banisher.
High-def of Primeval's Glorious Rebirth Show
I'm SOOOOOOOO looking forward to more Rith EDH!

Thanks for the high def image clayperce. I have been trying to figure out which one was which on the tiny card image haha.
Here ya go AgentGreen:
This card raises a few questions about interactions with Urborg, Tomb of Yawgmoth. Do basic lands that have been transformed into swamps count as "basic swamps"? Depending on the ruling that could greatly boost or reduce the is land's effectiveness.
April 6, 2018 5:25 p.m.
Yep--all basic lands will retain their "basic" type once corrupted by Urborg.
July 18, 2014 Ruling on Urborg, Tomb of Yawgmoth:
Urborg's ability causes each land on the battlefield to have the land type Swamp. Each land thus has the ability ": Add to your mana pool." Nothing else changes about those lands, including their names, other subtypes, other abilities, and whether they're legendary or basic.
Edit: Based on the flavour text, I think Wizards predicted players abusing this interaction.

Awesome, Thanks! Looks like I'll need to grab one of those for EDH purposes then.
April 6, 2018 6:01 p.m.
Yeah that new land needs to jump into my Ob Nixilis of the Black Oath deck right away.

I really like the new artwork for the checklands, so I shall purchase two of each for my decks, so that I have two with the original artwork and two with the new artwork in each deck. I also really liked how the article in which they were revealed spoke of the importance of good mana bases for the game, so I really hope that this means that WotC shall be making an effort to have usable dual lands more frequently in sets in the future.
April 7, 2018 12:44 a.m.
I'm considering using Marwyn, the Nurturer in Dispute.

Wotc can just stop putting art on cards now, because they'll never be able to top this:

That kitty art is cute, but it can't top the art of Harmless Offering
April 8, 2018 2:13 p.m.
I concur with AgentGreen. I have a very nippy orange kitten who I often call my little Harmless Offering. She makes that exact same face right before she does something sharp.

The Arcane Flight artwork would make for a fantastic playmat.

I honestly did not expect it to be mythic, but that is what we get. I like it overall and this is a powerhouse mythic for Limited.

Final parting is exactly what my seasons past deck needed. What a beautiful card.

I know Jeska literally blew Multani to pieces, and I am glad to see that he is alive and kicking, but I am a little disappointed in the artwork/look of his new form. I just pictured him to be more badass looking.
As a card though, this is one of the few times I am hoping a card is a bulk mythic. That way I can run him in my budget Jolrael, Empress of Beasts deck :). It also goes without saying that he will be a house in my Omnath, Locus of Rage deck.

Kavu Titan got a nice upgrade and a downshift in rarity. Also, yay Kavu are back!
April 10, 2018 11:17 a.m.
She's finally spoiled, and I must say I'm impressed with how she plays in the Command Zone. Tokens, voltron, or burn. She does it all. And to think it's rather hard to truly impress me with legendary creatures these days (tbh, Radha was cool, but Hallar just steals the cake for me).
April 10, 2018 12:18 p.m.
You only have to kill or Exile her to reset her counters, though.
April 10, 2018 1:29 p.m.
I assume it checks only "kicked" or "not kicked" and doesn't keep track of the number of multikicks. Wolfbriar Elemental
April 10, 2018 1:34 p.m.
Argy: True, which would mean protection for her is necessary. Command Beacon works as well.
legendofa: Yeah, she only notes multi-kicks one time, not as many times as you kicked the spell. Unfortunate, but she probably would be incredibly powerful if she were (though most multi-kicker spells aren't that great).

So at first glance I didn't notice the keywords sandwiched in on that Kavu...
Man if I can't win some games with mono green stompy I think I might retire. A 2/2 vigilance and trample that I can target with Rishkar, Peema Renegade or Verdurous Gearhulk if I cast it early, and a huge beatstick if I cast it late... don't mind if I do :)
Also its a total house in limited. First pick worthy even, though in this set a lot of things seem to be.

I think UW control will be the deck to beat. It's very hard to go under it as well, since you just run into Settle the Wreckage and then Fumigate. It operates almost entirely at instant speed.
If you're not playing hand disruption or counter magic, I don't know how you win vs Second Sun. And even if you are, it just has more removal and counter magic than you do.
I've never experienced playing in a standard where blue-based counter-control decks are a go-to (I think the last time was during Theros block or just before? - before my time) but I think we're going there now.
