Apparently there was a leak, so wizards put out the release notes for the set early - link to the notes on bottom of linked article
Please discuss
Interesting set, with lots of fun/interesting commander cards.
Since this was actually released by wizards, it is no longer considered a leak.
Argy, did you see the video that Strictly Better MTG put out? I'm super stoked for this set too, what color(s) do you want to run in Draft?
April 18, 2018 7:59 a.m.
I don't actually Draft, but I can appreciate how good this set will be for it.
I would think most people will go for first, to snatch up the bombs.
I'll check out that video.

I am stoked for pre-release
The only limited format I play is Sealed.
I think green is going to be the chase color, but I come into a pre-release with no forethought as to what I will build. I just crack open the packs and let the pool dictate what I play

I was happily surprised when in my most recent email from Wizards it stated that we will get a Random Foil Stamped Promo Legend AND the usual Foil Stamped random rare/mythic... Im definitely going Saturday and Sunday.
Green definitely looks strong in limited especially with some really solid commons but you know who else has solid commons for a change? Blue.
Im not a blue mage by nature but there are a lot of aggressive and good tempo cards at common like Academy Drake and Academy Journeymage. They are good because I am happy to play em early and I am happy to play em late. I think In Bolas's Clutches will win a lot of games too, I mean 6 mana for their best permanent and it gives you two legendary permanents for times when that may be relevant... its a very good deal.

Blue is definitely the strongest color, followed closely by black IMO. Green has the bombs at common and uncommon, but I think it needs support from another color. White and Red seem like support colors.
April 19, 2018 10:09 a.m.
For the prerelease, do not bother with which color is better, since you have 0 control over the cards. The best thing to do for a prerelease is to prepare sleeved lands and extra sleeves for the foil legendaries/mythics.
In terms of gameplay, you need to know which cards are your bombs (actually very difficult to do in this set) and which are the best removals and combat tricks - both for including them in your deck, and for playing around them.
For the bombs, they really depend on what you have in your pool. Naru Meha, Master Wizard is nice as a baseline 3/3 with flash, but becomes a bomb if you have 3-4 removals/combat tricks for 1 and 2 mana.
For the tricks and removal, if your opponent passes the turn with an island and 1 other land open, do not tap out to play something. Play around the Syncopate.
Here is a helpful, printable list for prerelease:

This set in prerelease will be insane, usually, there is a controlled amount of things your opponent can do and you do not have to worry about much. However, I think this time around the games are going to be completely unpredictable, I can't wait!
April 19, 2018 12:14 p.m.
I think Paladin of Atonement is going to be excellent in EDH.
You get to put a +1/+1 Counter on EVERY upkeep, if you lost life last turn.
That will be around three to four counters for smaller pods. Even more for larger ones.
Then you get life when the thing dies.
April 19, 2018 1:23 p.m.
I'm at prerelease with yet again another shit pool of cards.
Conceded the last game as my Opponent's deck was so durdly.
It's a bit like Ixalan - the colours are all so strong, like the Tribes, that if you have a spread you can't make a very strong deck.
April 20, 2018 12:37 p.m.
Th cards look as good as they did in the spoiler images.
The card stock this time is REALLY good quality, too.
My LGS owner said this is the first time he has run out of buy a box promos.
He also said this is the most interest he's had in a set for a long time.
April 20, 2018 2:36 p.m.
Something strange I forgot about.
In two matches tonight my Opponents had equipment on a Creature I kept tapping with Icy Manipulator (play this card if it's in your pool - thing flat out won me games), but it never occurred to them to move the equipment on to another Creature.
Or the even better trick - equip a good attacker in the first Main phase, attack with it, move the equipment to a decent blocker in your second Main phase.
April 20, 2018 3:50 p.m.
A couple of other things I thought about.
The new Common symbol looks AMAZING. It really pops, and doesn't look a thing like the Uncommon symbol.
seemed to be a particularly strong colour tonight. Partly to do with how good most of the Sagas are, but also due to the fact that it allows quite a lot of Exile.
So if you can throw some decent cards in your deck, I would do so.
Flying Creatures seem to be particularly good as well.
The 7/7 that only untaps when you cast a historic card really needs the right type of deck to get the most out lof it. Both times it was played against me I just shut it down with Icy Manipulator.
The Angel that gives everything else Hexproof is also very good.

Argy thanks for the report! I still have another 20 hours to wait for my prerelease. Very excited!

Tap down cards are solid. During Amonkhet pre-release I snagged a edifice of authority and used it. While it doesn't tap things down the impact is the same. That single card saved my ass a number of times and carried me to a top 2 finish
April 20, 2018 6:23 p.m.
Argy, you definitely have me pumped for the prerelease! Thanks a bunch!
April 21, 2018 2:18 a.m.
Really nice to hear about the cards. Everyone is always complaining about how needs have been of poorer quality in regards to printing, it makes me worry for new releases some times - though I haven't really seen that much of a difference myself.
Also, the saga in the photo somehow looks even nicer than in the spoilers, which's also great.

Should I trade my foil stamped Darigaaz Reincarnated towards a Planeswalker deck?
April 21, 2018 10:25 a.m.
I should have explained.
People will pay good money for that to use a Commander, or to put in their five colour Commander Dragons deck as one of the 99.
Or to use if Brawl becomes a thing.
We cracked a non-foil version and our eyes lit up.
April 21, 2018 11:03 a.m. Edited.
I might go back to my LGS today to see if anyone is opening booster boxes. If so, then see if they crack a Lyra Dawnbringer and if they'll trade it for the dragon.
But of course it just depends on the person(s).
April 21, 2018 12:29 p.m.
Lyra Dawnbringer would make an interesting EDH deck, of course as an angel commander, but I think she would shine as a mono-white Prison deck with angels as the main threats. Of course in limited she's an absolute bomb

During deck construction at the prerelease, the person sitting across from me opened a foil Karn; I was very jealous of that, and I really wish that I had chosen the box that he ultimately chose.
I did not win any rounds, which, at this point, is hardly surprising but still frustrating; I have been playing this game since 2003, so why do I always do so poorly at preleases?
The event was not a complete loss, for me, however, as I did open a Hinterland Harbor, and I am seeking to obtian two of each dual land for my decks.
Also, this is incredibly minor, but I just noticed that Mesa Unicorn has cloven hooves, and that really bothers me; I understand that unicorns are fictional creatures, but they are essentially a variation of a horse, and horses have solid hooves, not cloven hooves, so seeing a creature is is essentially a horse with cloven hooves is as weird as, for example, a rhinoceros with skinny antelope legs.

Played in the prerelease, the set is a ton of fun (not in sealed though). I built a UW fliers deck that had 0 synergy, but tons of flying and removal. Finished 2-2 and was satisfied. Never saw my bombs Lyra Dawnbringer and Raff Capashen, Ship's Mage live more than a turn.
Also, some sealed pools were better than others. The first round, I played versus a Jund deck that went t1 Llanowar Elves, t2 Grow from the Ashes for a swamp, turn 3 Gilded Lotus and turn 4 Darigaaz Reincarnated.
I have to report that interest in the set was much higher than previous ones, I do not think I have seen this many people at our prereleases in a while and the set is indeed good. I am excited to give draft a try next week, or maybe a league even.
April 22, 2018 1:42 a.m.
We have the highest turn out they've ever had at the prerelease I'm at right now.
I'm today.
1-1-0 at this stage.
Played 2HG yesterday and went 1-1-1.
April 22, 2018 3:12 a.m.
Just realise that you have very slim chance of cracking what you actually need out of a Bundle.
From a monetary stand point it's generally better to just buy the cards you need.

I played in one event yesterday and my LGS actually had to turn people away because there were too many people showing up. It's great to see so many folks excited about the new set.
I played a that had everything a great saproling deck needed except for Slimefoot, the Stowaway and a good way to close out games. I went 3-3. I did have a wicked recursion engine between Whisper, Blood Liturgist + Deathbloom Thallid + Yavimaya Sapherd that allowed me to constantly reanimate my important creatures. I also pulled a Karn, Scion of Urza and I only lost once after playing him. His card advantage is ridiculous.
A few things that I have noticed after one pre-release so far. Flyers are insanely strong in this format making Mammoth Spider a must have in green. Sagas appear to be fairly strong as well. The Eldest Reborn is an absolute bomb. Lastly, the limited format is wide open. I don't think I played against a single deck yesterday that was a copy of another. Obviously draft will be different, but I feel the variety in sealed bodes well for draft.
I am about to try pre-release #2 today. We will see how it goes!
April 22, 2018 11:09 a.m.
Good going on the Karn crack, you lucky duck!
I closed out a 2HG game with The Eldest Reborn. It is amazing.
The games I lost or won today were due to flying.
Arcane Flight is useful to get you out of trouble.
In Bolas's Clutches is also excellent for both removing a threat, and giving you one.

I got myself a Karn last night
Still didn't do to great, 3-2 in the afternoon and 1-2 in the evening.
April 22, 2018 12:23 p.m.
I had a great day and won all my games 2-1 ultimately just fining second to someone who had 2-0s in his record.
Sadly I achieved nothing in terms of Cards and came away with only one thing of minor interest, a Helm of the Host. My sucky pool included the blue and green legendary sorceries, a self replicator (in foil, woop) and a Darigaaz which my sealed deck centered on. Removal was hard to come by.
Considering the variety of decks I played against, as someone else said speaks highly for the variety and quality of the set. I may whinge about having little removal but it seems like the set has just enough of every type of card in it in good proportions.
I would play sealed of this set every day!

I got third at my prerelease, going 3-1 with a Sultai build. Tatyova is insane. So is the Umezawa legend. The 2 of them were incredible for me. I unfortunately didnt get much use out of my promo Slimefoot but the 1 match I lost was against someone else using Slimefoot to success. I also love the green ramp card that has kicker. The fact that the lands enter untapped is incredibly relevant. Definitely going all in on green when I draft if I can.

So in event #2 today I took third (3-1). I basically played Esper flyers/control with two Woodland Cemeterys to splash for Tatyova, Benthic Druid. I was packing both Aryel, Knight of Windgrace and Josu Vess, Lich Knight (who I did manage to kick one game for the victory) alongside multiples of each of The Eldest Reborn, Cloudreader Sphinx, Academy Drake, Deep Freeze, and Aven Sentry. Also, flickering The Eldest Reborn with Sentinel of the Pearl Trident while the third trigger is on the stack is so broken. I only lost to the eventual winner who was running a good stuff deck that had bigger fliers (Lyra and multiple Serras)
A buddy of mine also went 3-1 with a voltron deck that centered around powering up Yargle, Glutton of Urborg, Kwende, Pride of Femeref, or Evra, Halcyon Witness with On Serra's Wings (he had 3), Dub, or Jousting Lance. He also ran a couple of Memorial to Folly and Tragic Poets to keep recurring his creatures and enchantments. It was by far the funniest/my favorite deck I have seen all weekend.

I opened a Benalish Marshal in one of my packs, and I am very fond of that card; I am very surprised that it took WotC so long to print a creature version of Glorious Anthem, but it is better late than never, in my mind. I do ave two minor complaints about it, however: first, it really needs to have an ability such as first strike, vigilance, or lifelink, as it is useless without other creatures; second, its name means that it cannot be reprinted in any set that is not on Dominaria, so I hope that WotC will eventually print a non-plane-specific equivalent of it, at some point.

OK so here is a really random coincidence. First pre release my promo legend was rona, disciple of gix... Boo. But I pulled a foil gilded lotus in the six so I figure that made up for lame legend. Today I open up ANOTHER rona promo and my non legend promo is gilded lotus... What are the odds?
Second but of weirdness. After going 2-2 day one I opened 2 prize packs rares were cabal stronghold and Mox Amber! Pretty cool. Today I went 4-0 battling a friend of mine in the last match. 2 of his 3 prize packs... Cabal stronghold and mox amber... Wow. I asked the shop owner if it was by chance the same box from the previous day and he said yep still had half a box left after you left" we then dubbed it... The mox box.
April 23, 2018 12:32 a.m.
Btw, you havent lived until you turn 1 Llanowar Elves into turn 2 Steel Leaf Champion. The look in their eyes when you have a 5/4 and all they have is a land... priceless.

Thats a good one. My favorite play was probably Danitha Capashen, Paragon turn 3 into a turn 4 equipped Blackblade Reforged into my opponent scooping.
Though redundant as it was attaching On Serra's Wings to a Serra Angel made me happy.
Also had multiple game wins when opponents scooped after I played On Serra's Wings on pretty much anything.

Just came home to TO, to comment about the colours ! Imho , the chase color in this set, was blue!! believe it or not, blue actually won me the pre release and i got to get some prize cards and trade my 'first place boosters' for an AMAZING looking mox amber promo. I splashed in black and i was gold! .everyone was going for selesnya decks, but apparently it failed :/ I am not stating that the other colours were trash, BUT , i would love to see someone deal, with Cold-Water Snappers, Opts, Divests, Deep Freezes, Unwinds, Dark Bargains etc. These are ALL bomb commons. At a point, i thought, that i was really lucky to open them , but i noticed , that nearly everyone had opened those cards.
Everyone has to agree though, that the sealed formats are the best! i cannot wait to draft this set !

Hi_diddly_ho_neighbor says... #43
Just an FYI. I did a couple test drafts on MTGO just for fun. From a very early on perspective, the format is quite slow. Green is insane at turtling up. Also, combining Windgrace Acolyte with Gaea's Blessing and The Mending of Dominaria gives you basically an infinite deck, alot of lifegain, and is extremely strong. You don't even really need The Mending as long as you have two of each of the other two cards.

HARDsofty, do you think that the webcomic of that name might ever return? I always found it to be very hilarious, so I miss it very much.
April 25, 2018 11:14 p.m.
I went to a midnight release draft and got some cards for I've got Spores while drafting. Made a Black/Green fungus and Saprolings deck! Also drafted Slimefoot! Single elimination and I lost in the first round, but had a fun ass time making and sacrificing saprolings!
Well, have some fun with Dominaria!
Argy says... #1
I think this set will excellent for Draft, considering how strong each of the colours is on their own.
