Double Masters

Today, WotC announced a new set named Double Masters, apparently, a set that focuses on cards that double certain things.

Obviously, I am glad to see a new Masters set, although, with such a specific theme, I doubt that it shall contain too many of the cards that I am hoping shall be reprinted. The first two cards that WotC has revealed from the set are Doubling Season (which is very appropriate for this set) and Blightsteel Colossus, although I am not certain how that card works with the theme of the set.

Here are some of the vital details of the set:

Double Masters

Release Date: August 7, 2020

-332 cards

-24 packs per booster box

-15-card booster packs, with two rares and two foil cards per pack! (And, yes, those foils can be up to two additional rares.)

-Two non-foil showcase box topper cards included in each booster box

-Available in English, French, German, Simplified Chinese, and Japanese

Double Masters will be available on Magic Online starting August 6 (ONE day early!) for $6.99 per booster. It will not be redeemable.

What does everyone else think about this? What cards do you imagine shall be in this set, and are you excited for it?

Weird timing to announce the set.

I guess Primal Vigor, Parallel Lives, Anointed Procession, Zendikar Resurgent, Mirari's Wake and Alhammarret's Archive seem pretty much set. Same goes for Consecrated Sphinx.

Atraxa, Praetors' Voice shall also be reprinted in this set, which is nice; I already have a copy of her, but anything that shall reduce her price is good. Since she is being reprinted, I really would like to see reprints of both Riku of Two Reflections and Sen Triplets, since they has never been reprinted, and, thus, are now very expensive.

They are not likely to be reprinted in this set, but I shall still hope for my top three most desired reprints of Akroma's Memorial, Vedalken Orrery, and Rhystic Study, and a reprint of Dromar, the Banisher would be nice, as well, since he is the only primordial dragon who has not yet been reprinted.

berryjon, WotC explicitly stated that they would not be reprinting any fetchlands in this set, but did assure players that they would be reprinting those lands in another set, this year (although they did not specify which fetchlands that they would be reprinting).

shadow63, Rhox Faithmender and Archfiend of Despair render both Boon Reflection and Wound Reflection obsolete, but the other cards in that cycle would be nice.

Also, I would like to see True Conviction, Furnace of Rath, and Gisela, Blade of Goldnight in this set, as well, since they all double damage that is dealt.

I dont see how making a creature version of a card makes the enchantment versions obsolete

May 21, 2020 7:21 p.m.

DemonDragonJ says... #8

Kaalia of the Vast is also being reprinted in this set, which is also very nice!

shadow63, perhaps it was wrong to say that the creatures render the enchantments obsolete, but their advantages are numerous: first, they can attack and block; second, creatures generally are easier to cheat out onto the battlefield, resurrect, and duplicate (which is why I am so eager for there to be a creature version of Warstorm Surge), meaning that players will generally prefer the creatures over the enchantments, unless they have a deck that is specifically dedicated to enchantments.

DemonDragonJ in edh it's the exact opposite usually people want the enchantment because ots harder to kill

May 21, 2020 8:42 p.m.

DemonDragonJ says... #10

shadow63, I cannot speak for every player, but I shall accept creatures being able to kill for the reasons that I stated, previously; in my mind, their benefits outweigh their drawbacks.

I think the double masters name is more towards 2x rares and 2x foils in each pack. Plus the 2x first picks out of the packs in draft. I don't think "doubling" effects are the focus, i think they were added for flavor reasons. In other words doubling wont be the main/only theme in the set.

May 22, 2020 9:45 a.m.

DemonDragonJ says... #12

pskinn01, that makes sense, and would explain the inclusion of Blightsteel Colossus, which has no apparent connection to the theme of the set, but I still think that Mitotic Slime, Stunt Double, or Splinter Twin would all be suitable choices for this set.

I hope Masters-esque sets like this are here to stay. Ultimate Masters and Myserty Booster were both amazing and good for the budget playerbase(I now own 4x Tireless Tracker 'cos Mystery chopped its price by 2/3). Double Masters should be pretty good either way, at least reprinting a solid number of high value cards.

Anyone staring at Steam Vents and friends? '2' life? And if they reprint them, it's... 2^2 reprints. That's double doubled.

Calling it now but my guess is Clarion Ultimatum because they like reprinting bulk rares

May 22, 2020 4:20 p.m.

DemonDragonJ says... #16

dbpunk, I would like to see all of the original five ultimatums reprinted, since only Cruel Ultimatum and Titanic Ultimatum have been reprinted, before.

May 22, 2020 6:05 p.m.

DemonDragonJ says... #17

I say it every time that a new set is announced, but I would like to see Reflecting Pool in this set, to help decrease its price, and, although it is not expensive, Meteor Crater has never been reprinted, so a reprint of that card would be nice.

May 22, 2020 8:27 p.m.

299.99 pre-order on the WotC MTG store front on amazon, its WotC's own store(not fulfilled by amazon). enjoy. ready your wallets. almost in a depression. and this comes up... im sad.

This whole virus thing did one thing to me: remove FNM, 90% of my social life. Tho I drafted Ikoria Friday. Pulled 2x Lurrus, which was nice, and got 2nd with Cycling.

Still sad, though. I wonder if Doubley's gonna sell.

May 24, 2020 10:33 a.m.

DemonDragonJ says... #20

cassualbuilder, how can they justify that high of a price, when only a smaller number of cards have been revealed, thus far?

May 24, 2020 2:05 p.m.

shadow63 says... #21

Ddj because wotc knows what's in the set

May 24, 2020 2:58 p.m.

dbpunk says... #22

Also because this is another cash grab set like the secret lairs and most master sets have been.

May 24, 2020 4:22 p.m.

DemonDragonJ says... #23

I would like to see Godsire, Meglonoth, and Uril, the Miststalker reprinted in this set, since none of them have ever been reprinted, before.

dbpunk, most of the cards that have been revealed, thus far, are excellent cards that need further reprints to keep them affordable, so I would not dismiss this set as a "cash grab" (but I do fully agree that the Secret Lairs are definitely cash grabs).

May 25, 2020 midnight

shadow63 says... #24

Any set that they charge more then the price of a standard booster is a cash grab

May 25, 2020 6:44 a.m.

DemonDragonJ says... #25

shadow63, the higher price is likely (hopefully) due to the fact that this set will have a much higher average power level than a standard-legal set.

May 25, 2020 8:52 a.m.

I do like what I am seeing out of the reprints so far, but....

DemonDragonJ, there is absolutely no reason any 15-card booster set should sell for more than a basic standard pack. It costs the same amount of money to print a Black Lotus as it does a Forest. WotC has always claimed that they "ignore the secondary market", but time-and-time-again WotC increases the price of "premium sets" (aka, sets with high value cards in them). It's 100% a cash grab and unless they come out and say the packs will cost the normal-to-reasonable price, I will be extremely disappointed in WotC due to the current circumstances.

Now, with all that said, this set is slightly different since it will have 2 rares and 2 foils per pack. A reasonable cost would then fall somewhere between $7-$9 a pack. However, I don't have high hopes so get ready for these packs to sell at $15+ (using Ultimate Masters as a reference point).

Also, there is a rumor that the partners may get reprints in this set.

May 25, 2020 11:03 a.m.

Sorry for the double post, but also....oof that Mana Crypt alter. It looks terrible next to the others.

May 25, 2020 11:08 a.m.

So I just noticed that WotC has already given these packs a $16 price tag on their amazon store. Welp, I guess when they say "this set may not be for you" they are meaning 90% of the player base right now....

May 25, 2020 11:49 a.m.

DemonDragonJ says... #29

Hi_diddly_ho_neighbor, I actually can understand your feelings on this matter, because, not long ago, WotC printed judge promo versions of Reflecting Pool and Rhystic Study, which means that they are not likely to reprint them in "normal" sets at any time soon, despite the fact that both of those cards are very popular and expensive at this time, so that felt to me like an admission that they do not care about keeping the game affordable to average players.

May 25, 2020 12:05 p.m.

DemonDragonJ says... #30

What are the chances that the five allied-colored talismans (Talisman of Progress, Talisman of Unity, and so forth) will be reprinted in this set, with artwork and flavor text that makes them consistent with the enemy-colored talismans from Modern Horizons?

May 25, 2020 10:18 p.m.

dont forget about the next modern horizon set. thats still in the works. DemonDragonJ i bet you will see them there next.

May 26, 2020 12:30 a.m.

DemonDragonJ says... #32

cassualbuilder, has WotC stated that there shall be a second Modern Horizons set? I certainly would like there to be, because the first was excellent, but the players should not become too hopeful unless WotC confirms that there shall be such a set.

May 26, 2020 7:54 a.m.

shadow63 says... #33

CasualBuilder I kinda doubt it. Modern horizons was all cards that were new to modern the talismans are already in modern

May 26, 2020 9:50 a.m.

DemonDragonJ says... #34

Why does the promo version of Mana Crypt have flavor text when the regular version does not?

I know that they are not likely to be reprinted in this set, but I would like to see both Undermine and Recoil reprinted, to keep them available and inexpensive, since Absorb was reprinted, recently.

Chromatic Lantern would be another nice reprint, to keep its price low and its availability high.

May 27, 2020 6:51 p.m.

DemonDragonJ says... #35

The various "split cards" from numerous sets in this game would be great additions to this set, as they would fit within its theme.

May 28, 2020 12:34 p.m.

DemonDragonJ says... #36

Neither Ashes to Ashes nor Dust to Dust have ever been reprinted, and, although they are both outclassed, today, I still would like to see them reprinted, with new artwork.

May 29, 2020 12:20 p.m.

DemonDragonJ says... #37

Another card that I would like to see reprinted in this set is Righteous Aura, since that card has not been reprinted in a long time.

May 29, 2020 8:27 p.m.

DemonDragonJ says... #38

Forgive the double post, but I thought of more cards that I would like to see reprinted in this set.

Cromat and Maelstrom Archangel have never been reprinted, so I would like to see both of them reprinted in this set, if possible, and the locus lands would be nice, since many players seem to favor the Urza lands over them, when they are usually far superior.

May 29, 2020 8:55 p.m.

TriusMalarky says... #39

DemonDragonJ I know in Modern ppl use Urza lands over Locuses because Cloudpost is banned.

May 30, 2020 7:39 a.m.

DemonDragonJ says... #40

TriusMalarky, but this set is not intended for any specific format, nor will the reprints in this set change the legality of the cards, so there is no reason to not reprint the locus lands in it.

May 30, 2020 8:27 a.m.

DemonDragonJ says... #41

Darksteel Pendant and Book of Rass are both cards that I would like to see reprinted in this set, as well.

May 30, 2020 8:44 a.m.

DemonDragonJ says... #42

At this point, I admit that I am essentially mentioning random cards that I would like to see reprinted, but Overabundance is a great card that could use a reprint.

May 30, 2020 11:18 a.m.

TriusMalarky says... #43

You realize at this point that you're not just spamming random cards, but you're also spamming cards that are so worthless that if they were any cheaper they'd be squirrel pants. Like literal pans for squirrels.

These cards are bulk rares at best. That's exactly what we don't want in any Masters set. They should be shoving Fetches and Shocks and Fastlands and Jaces and everything in a pile. That would be optimal.

But they'll probably give us more bulk rares nobody needs.

May 30, 2020 12:56 p.m.

DemonDragonJ says... #44

TriusMalarky, most of the cards that I am mentioning are very expensive (such as Akroma's Memorial or Vedalken Orrery), have never been printed in the modern card frame (such as Dromar, the Banisher, Book of Rass or Overabundance), or both (such as Rhystic Study) so I feel that there is nothing wrong with desiring reprints of them; perhaps, if I mention them sufficiently, an employee at WotC may see my posts and realize that there is a desire for those cards to be reprinted.

May 30, 2020 1:32 p.m.

DemonDragonJ says... #45

Mark Rosewater said that he was writing his preview article for this set, so does anyone think that spoilers for it shall begin, soon, or is it still too early, especially with Jumpstart spoilers having ended only recently?

June 28, 2020 3:53 p.m.

DemonDragonJ says... #46

The fact that Utter End was reprinted recently makes me hope that WotC shall soon reprint Anguished Unmaking, since that card is becoming expensive, so it very much needs a reprint.

Doubling Cube would perfectly fit the theme of this set, and it has not been reprinted since Tenth Edition, which was now over a decade ago.

Worldly Tutor is the only card in its cycle that has not yet been reprinted, so I definitely would like to see it reprinted in this set.
