legendofa: Unlucky Lands?

The Swarmweaver: In 60-card formats, you can play an extra copy of this to get some more tokens + have both a creature & artifact card in the graveyard for the purpose of delirium

Shardmage's Rescue: IDK why they've modified the hexproof templating from e.g. Airtight Alibi

Grievous Wound: I like how the art for this was too good, so they decided to add a pair of headphones in the upper right corner to hold it back

Tyvar, the Pummeler: Magic did not need fanny packs.

Ethereal Hockey Armor: Yeah...

For most of the "Double Exposure" card, most of the card have some monster or omnious object overlayed with the actual subject of the card. But Niko's just has them screaming...

Coward_Token Unlucky lands sounds pretty good.

Piranha Fly feels almost like a seed card for some upcoming set. It's a pretty unremarkable common with unusual typing. Are Insects and/or Fish going to mean something in the future?

Bloomburrow had a lot of Fish tokens, and the Swarmweaver boosts Insects, so maybe?

From Overlord of the Mistmoors, I'm guessing there's going to some more cards that makes flying Insect tokens in the form of moths

Fear of Abduction is straight up a grey.

IDK why it needs a drawback either

Vanish from Sight: It didn't last long this time, but it's still kinda funny that between the ending of NEO, Planar Disruption, and this card, those two can't seem able to stick together.

Innocuous Rat: I liked it better when it was called Sinuous Vermin

Friendly Ghost: surprised this doesn't have flash

Most Valuable Slayer: [groans]

Flesh Burrower: I like this art at least, the extra body mouths are neat

Abhorrent Oculus: The flashlight humans aside, this art is still really cool, and it's neat that the actual card synergizes with manifest dread's milling

So uh ever since the spoilers started proper, me and others have been pretty down on this set. Does anyone have anything nice to say?

I like it. I could just go without all the poopy puns...but that has been every set for the last so many years.

They have some decent power, they hit the mark on 80's-90's horror (unlike when they tried the Wild West), they have some innovation. Jund gets a neat dude with graveyard synergy while not NEEDING to be another Jund GY or sac-theme. Tonally, if you like cheese-camp slashers from that timeline (I do).. then a good amount of the cards, quotes, theme, & characters are on-mark

I don't love all the ghostbusteresque equipment, but I already knew that would keep being a theme.

I like the Moth-themed demon (funny enough I had been ragging on the idea of a butterfly/polymorph-themed DEVIL with a cult following, before this)

Mechanically I like "glimmers", though: creature dying & turning into an enchantment is not a new idea, just more utilized in this set.

Again, I like this set, though, from a more critical & conceptual standpoint I agree that diving into tropes too much can be off-putting... Not as off-putting as the bounty of stupid-a$$ puns printed on cards :) - where some nerd designer thought "I made a funny"... When they indeed did not make a funny, they didn't even make a cute. I get the sub-culture of MtG puncraft, but let the players make the puns & stick to printing good cards. They could have legitimately printed a card that sounded like a magic spell... but instead they print some pun/phrase.

Tyvar/murder hobo should be dealt with as most murder hobos are dealt with in this horror genre. That is: overembracing the murder hobo side & being all dark-soul possessed by one of the many murder slashers. That is a staple idea (usually the physically imposing jock gets possessed).

I also can't stand the cutesy/flippant cheerleader card, the only redemption would have been another card that showed what happened after the flip :) ... which should go without saying, in that genre

Enduring Courage (MV 4!) + Bello, Bard of the Brambles + Goblin Bombardment

September 10, 2024 7:24 a.m.

This set is driving me insane. The aesthetic of a giant haunted house that impossibly has a creepy cabin in the woods in it is really neat. The room mechanic is also really neat. The “check it out it’s the 80’s” feel is not great. Some of this stuff is really cool, but also effectively none of it fits my haunted house deck. That’s largely my own fault because I’m the one who decides what my theme would be, but the cards that WOULD have fit are all white or red or green. It is almost exactly the same as when I made my witch deck, prior to the Harry Potter and harvest festival sets... and the stuff that would have fit was green and white. Color Pie discussions aside: I feel like the color themes have been weird for a while now too. There will be cards I see that I will enjoy seeing... but not much here for me again. Aside from the Pinhead guy who’s totally not Pinhead. He’s going in my torture deck for sure.

Of all the cards to get excited about.. I love this: osseous sticktwister. In my Breena, the Demagogue deck this weenie is going to be a freak'n terror!

Lifelink on a 2cmc body. With an endstep dilemma type of ability based on its' power! +4/+4 early-game is not an uncommon occurrence in that deck

Oh and fours years after Charge of the Forever-Beast, I'm annoyed that they're insisting on making green creature removal that doesn't require actual creatures on the battlefield by printing Monstrous Emergence.

They really threw a bone to the commander deck. I haven't seen them incentivize group slug so well in a long time. Though the commander decks are not the most affordable things around.

I wonder if having card draw stapled onto a sluggy commander will turn some people onto the play style.

My Atla deck is one of the better punisher sluggy, red chip-dmg decks that I have seen function & turn the tables on controlly themes. I imagine this deck can effectively use some of those concepts in a different way. Some goofball cards that I love could function nicely: Chandra, Awakened Inferno & Magmatic Force would be great
