fate reforged, filter land reprint?

So it's been spoiled that hybrid costs will return for fate reforged which makes good sense in terms of flavour and it being a small set. But any set needs fixing when you have multicoloured spells and activation costs, so how about dem filter lands? Seems like they would suit a small set with this requirement and the block overall, would really help push three colour in standard to the max Other point being that dragons of tarkir will be drafted by itself, so when drafting khans & fate you'll get extra fixing something they've pushed since shards block fell short.

Currently they're close to if not equal in value to a shock land but see far less play in eternal formats. However they're still a staple and not one I would care to see rise in value.

I think they are a possibility for reprint. I wouldn't say they aren't a staple. While they are commonly used as a 1-of they are quite commonly used.

Well they did announce that fetches were a no go due to the cycle being balanced right now. By that logic, no filters either

Also Dragons of Tarikir won't be drafted alone. Khans is drafted alone right now. When Fate Reforged is released Khans and Fate will be drafted together. Finally when the third set, Dragons of Tarkir, is released then Fate and Dragons will be drafted together. Draft will always be one large set and the small set, with the exception of right now when Khans is the only set available.

Actually no, it was covered during the initial reveal of the block that the third set will be drafted by itself. It will also rotate out after the first two under the new system.

ah, i'm leaning towards the rest of the pain lands. It makes sense, as WOTC wanted to print full sets of dual lands

November 2, 2014 12:47 a.m.

They did announce they want to print full sets of lands, but do so in blocks. Nothing about core sets. It would make more sense to see the other fetches rather than the other pains

I'm not sure if I'm confused or if you guys are confused both those links take me to the rotation schedule for the new standard format not the draft format

abenz419 says... #12

actually I lied that second link shows the draft format and even says Louie Louie fate reforged. Luis is referring to the third set which we now know as dragons of Tarkir

i don't draft much so have a question, how long is a set drafted for in a competitive/official capacity at FNM, PTQ, GP etc? Is it only while the set is in standard or the most recent block/set? If so then how will it revert to a triple DOT once the first two rotate out?

Named_Tawyny says... #16

It won't. A set (or rather, in most cases except this one, a block) is drafted until the next block (or, core set) is released.

So in January, we'll go to KTK, KTK, FRF. Then in March(ish) we'll be DTK, DTK, FRF. And then come summertime, we'll be M16, M16, M16. after that (September 2015) it will be Blood Blood Blood, then in Janary 2016 Blood Blood Sweat, and then in March 2016 it will be Tears Tears Tears.

That is, unless they change something before then.

I don't understand any of this drafting nonsense at all.

Drafting & Sealed are like a double edged sword, on the one hand they're great formats that some even choose to specialise in that helps define the game and a great build around for a set release. But the flip side being that distorts set designs that are then predominately made up of cards that work in draft/sealed but don't see constructed play at all. None more so is this the case than for eternal formats which hurts the game in the long run imho as rarely is it worth buying packs or boxes over singles for a modern, EDH or legacy player due to the sheer amount of cards designed for draft/sealed.

Named_Tawyny says... #19

Well, that's one incredibly biased way of looking at it.

November 2, 2014 1:44 p.m.

Drafting and Sealed are there for more reasons than what you stated. First, some people don't have the cash to straight up invest in a competitive constructed deck. This allows them to play competitively for a lower price. Also, your statement about eternal players buying packs is somewhat misleading. Yes, it is a bad investment for them, but draft/sealed is not the reason. Cards printed in standard sets are on a much lower power level in general. Sphinx's Revelation was one of the chase rares from RTR, but despite dominating standard, it is pretty weak in Legacy. You also have to consider some other factors when discussing the non rotating format players. For example, just because someone plays modern doesn't mean they don't also play standard. So they may buy a box to get some standard cards (or maybe even just for the enjoyment of opening packs), regardless of the fact that they also play modern. Furthermore, some people invest in boxes. Khans, for example, has a pretty high number of value cards at the moment. I play legacy and edh, but I still bought a box as an investment. I pulled over 250 dollars in value, and I have everything I need to play standard now as well.

Back to the topic thread...had it actually been confirmed we won't be seeing the other fetches in this block? I know there was a ton of "no way we'll see fetches" until they were spoiled for KTR. I would prefer to see fetches than filter lands and to whoever said they are on part with shocks...you may want to check those prices because most filter play sets will run you close to $100 and set of shocks wont even take you past $50 right now.

See Flooded Grove, Cascade Bluffs, Sunken Ruins, Fetid Heath, etc. I think Graven Cairns is the big exception to this.

It was dubious as to whether we'd see reprints of Zen fetches. Reprints of Ons fetches was just a curveball. Wizards tricked us when they said that we wouldn't see Zen fetches again until 2015 but kept quiet about the other set haha.

It's unlikely that they'll put important land reprints in a small set that won't be opened much.

I think the current land base is probably as good as it's going to get for Standard for a little while... small possibility of completing the Pain land cycle in Fate Reforged, but I'm starting to doubt it.

The mana fixing in KTK is likely more than enough for draft when paired with the less multicoloured FRF. - However when it's FRF and 'Louie' they may need to have more fixing again (depending on color scheme of 'Louie')... they may just re-use the life-lands, or they may have something all-together new.

I'm just hoping for an enemy color completion to the Fieldmist Borderpost cycle by the end of the Block. (not that completion of the Fetches wouldn't be nice)
