Font Cycle

Check them out here. From a constructed standpoint, none of them are really playable, but from a limited standpoint, it looks like a really badly designed cycle due to the massive gap in power levels. Font of Vigor is absolutely awful. I have no idea why anyone would ever choose to pay 5 mana for 7 life. Font of Ire is an overcosted Lava Axe (which is saying something, because Lava Axe is hardly pushed in the first place). Font of Fortunes is mediocre at best. Then we get the last two. Font of Return, in limited anyway, is pretty solid. If a load of your bombs have died, just bring them back. Font of Fertility is just miles better than the others. I offers ramp and fixing, which are both very useful in limited, on turn 2.

I don't know about you guys, but this seems like an inconsistent design to me.

The payment is split in two, so I like it. If you can run enough creatures to protect you, more life could help you win a grindy matchup. EoT Lava Axe for four sounds good to me as well, because if one of these resolves you can bet their abilities will too.

Yeh, I think they should have tried to even them out as far as was possible. As it stands a few are ok and the rest are trashy

But they're also a cycle made completely for Limited. Sure some may be (much) worse than others, but they're common enchantments (meaning that you'll likely see a few of them) that trigger Constellation at a cheap price.

Well, they are all a bit overcosted, but they trigger the constellation ability, which might actually be a thing.

Also a point is that pretty much no one would ever counter them and even if they do, you spent much less mana than you would on a sorcery of the same power.

Still not sure I like any of them except maybe the green and the black one.

Interesting comparison:

Inspiration vs Font of Fortunes (1U mana cost, 1U activation, draw 2)

I actually played Inspiration in my budget UW control deck since I liked playing stuff in my opponents end step when he didn't do anything that turn.

With the Font I can still do that but give my opponent a heads up, also have to spend one more colored and have to do a pre-payment.

Then again, especially for UR the sorceries in the GY actually matter and since this is an enchantment, it's a lot harder to get back or re-use.

Font of Fortunes is basically equatable to Courier's Capsule ; it's card draw for decks that care about having as many enchantments as possible. It's a pretty narrow use, but it definitely deserves to exist and I'm glad they're printing it.

Divination and Rampant Growth are quite playable, while Disentomb x3 is fine in the board. The other two are bad, with Lava axe being better than Angels Mercy.

Hmm... Thinking about it, if you open a Silent Sentinel in your pool, you could go downtown in blue/white and draw your entire deck.

font of fortunes is alright, a divination would be better in it's place, but you only got so many cards to work with right.

Article about the fonts.

It pretty much says everything.

I just discovered an interesting play with the Font of Fortunes in my deck... I threw it in because I needed a decent play for T2... even without this interaction, playing the Font is good for card advantage on later turns.

T1: Island , Dakra Mystic
T2: Swamp , Hidden Strings untapping the 2 Land, cast the "Font of Fortunes". Attack (assuming they didn't play a blocker)... The copy of Hidden Strings untaps your lands... sac the Font (likely at end of opponents turn) to get early card advantage.

Hidden Strings was originally added to the deck because it allows T2 Notion Thief , or Dictate of Kruphix , or even just to allow you to both attack with and use the ability of Dakra Mystic .
