With the announcement that the block formats will change post Khans, and that Standard will have 2 rotations a year starting in 2016, does this create room for a sanctioned "Extended" Standard format? For example purposes, let's say the 6 most recent blocks (once there are actually 6 two set blocks).

Yep. Extended is dead. Modern took it's place.

I highly doubt it, but that is an interesting idea... Modern does not have the same target audience as Extended. Neither does Standard, especially with the new changes. Some people are already concerned about prices, etc. with the cards rotating 6 months sooner. One "problem" the changes are supposed to help is that decks dominate the format for too long and people get bored or frustrated. If staleness was a problem before, no wonder Extended never caught on, it could only be worse! But if Standard gets "fixed" maybe some people will long for a format where they can still have a constantly changing meta, but with a larger card pool and without having to give up their cards so soon. Is that target audience large enough to warrant sanctioned events? ...probably not. But only time will tell.

>Modern is more of a "legacy-light". It doesn't rotate, and as new sets/blocks release, only a short list of cards get incorporated.
I'm just thinking that with the increased rotation frequency, extended becomes more appealing. One of the chief complaints I'm hearing about the new block format is the shorter "shelf life" of cards will increase the cost of playing the format (needing to replace decks more often).
Old Extended WAS basically just Standard Replay. With the new rotation schedule making standard more fluid and shifting. A New Extended could be a more stable alternative/addition.

I would think that WOTC would be more interested in promoting Modern. Maybe once it gets as stable with established players as Standard is with newer players, we'll see a push for a new format. I don't disagree that the Extended concept fills a nice niche in the constructed lineup, but it's just not practical at this point in terms of support or attention.

I miss Extended :(
They didn't ban Bitterblossom and later Jace, the Mind Sculptor right away like they should have. Extended being the same deck dominating every top 8 for several years killed the format.
It used to be a lot of fun prior to Lorwyn and one of the most diverse formats ever created when the DCI did a good job of managing the ban list. The card pool was large enough for new decks to pop up, but didn't have cards like Mana Drain or Lion's Eye Diamond dictating the power level of new cards rotating in.

Extended was a format. It got the axe because it was basically Standard Replay, and it didn't enjoy much popularity. And that was back when Modern didn't even exist yet.
