Future of magic expansions...

Spoilers, Rumors, and Speculation forum

Will magic ever be taken beyond the realms of pure medieval fantasy? Will guns perhas be introduced? Would anyone be interested in a plane where there is a alien vs. human settlers theme going on? I know that somebody had a cool western themed plane in a bottom thread. What other ideas jump to mind!

Dalektable says... #2

Personally I hope not, but i am a huge fan of the medieval fantasy theme with magic. It's a big percentage of why play the game, introducing more modern things is something i'm not really up for. I could maybe get behind aliens, just maybe, but really i like things the way they are.

Technically, the Eldrazi were aliens to Zendikar, and not only did they try to take over the plane but they also had the whole brood and tentacle things down. :)

Goblins have some impressive technological stuff.

Remember dwarves having neat images too.

Moved to S&R.

Honestly, moving outside of the current genre would just come off as gimmicky. It's not at all the atmosphere the game has established, and there's no way to justify an abrupt change without the system coming off as a cop-out or a shark jump.

Hunter_mtg says... #6

I could see some new technology if it was steampunky and still medieval themed I guess it would be good

Check this out, Gather the Townsfolk Yep thats right they have pistol like guns. Obviously these are not modern fire arms but they look like the early type of guns. So I suppose it kinda already happend.

Krayhaft says... #8

The humans in Gather the Townsfolk carry hand crossbows. You can see this in the art for Elite Inquisitor too.

Also, one of the Portal sets was set in a world where people invented firearms.

Going high-tech with theme would be too far off-base; I doubt you'll see anything more "recent" technology-wise than the Innistrad block (from which Gather the Townsfolk came from) and its gothic influences. Maybe some steampunk/gaslamp fantasy, which it seemed to me to be Ravnica's setting.

Putting too much technology into the set might distract from the Magic part.

Just going to mention this and leave Rocket Launcher ...

Ruric says... #12

IMO magic doesnt match that much with technology but you can also see Goblin Sharpshooter old art from Onslaught better

March 6, 2014 9:28 a.m.

nobu_the_bard says... #13

There's always going to be some random things that don't quite fit because they are hilarious. Usually in the hands of goblins, sometimes others: Orcish Lumberjack .

March 6, 2014 9:31 a.m.

Ruric says... #14

but basically in mirrodin and phyrexia you can see robots and that even more technological then guns Memnite , Steel Overseer

APPLE01DOJ says... #15

hope not, I would loose interest.

SharuumNyan says... #16

I don't like the idea of inserting more of Earth's history into Magic. I'm not fond of the Roman/Greek theme in Theros already.

March 6, 2014 1:42 p.m.

Ruric says... #17

what about mayan mythology? anyone familiar

March 6, 2014 1:46 p.m.

SharuumNyan says... #18

Lots of opportunity for brutal cannabalism cards in a Mayan set, but I'm not sure how the present-day Mayan community would feel about that.

March 6, 2014 3:07 p.m.

APPLE01DOJ says... #19

lol thought I was the only 1 who hated the greek mythology in theros.

Anything's better than the Kamigawa crap.

March 6, 2014 11:22 p.m.

Mythril_Sage says... #21

I LOVE the flavor and themes of the Kamigawa set. Heard it played terribly when it was out, but I definitely want a revisit because...Ninjas! XD They can just fix what didn't work the first time anyway.

Of course, I may be a lit bit biased? I'm crazy about oriental themes in stuff. =P

March 7, 2014 2:25 a.m.

APPLE01DOJ says... #22

well I rather have rat ninjas over dudes in speedos any day.

March 7, 2014 2:58 a.m.

Jirayamo says... #23

Ninjas...ninjas everywhere I rly would like them to come back

March 7, 2014 5:42 a.m.

Ruric says... #24

Jirayamo yeah its cool and samurais too, but just not that much legendary please...

March 7, 2014 6:45 a.m.

Schuesseled says... #25

I'd love to see them explore the whole "rigger" stuff they hinted at in Future Sight.

March 7, 2014 7 a.m.

Jirayamo says... #26

The new samurais could have the new ability jiu jitsu!

March 7, 2014 9:18 a.m.

Ragnarocker says... #27

Kamigawa was still better than that fake-ass Mirrodin crap that everyone adores.

nobu_the_bard says... #28

I'm just going to say though... I'd really like another set with Norse mythology, actually. I'm overly fond of it. Meso-American sort of design would be different and interesting, but I'd like to see a better designed set using a setting like Ice Age had. I really liked Ice Age's setting but compared to the cards you see nowadays they were so much more boring.

Realistically though I doubt the next set will be top-down. They only seem to periodically do top-down design based on Maro's columns. Only recently are they starting to reconsider it as a serious angle; both Ravnica blocks were largely mechanics-driven, for example.

March 7, 2014 5:12 p.m.

Ragnarocker says... #29

You took the words right out of my mouth...keyboard.

Warstorm Surge . Indeed.

It would just be interesting to see if/how much of a role "gods" would play in such a set, what with such emphasis being placed on them in Theros.

March 8, 2014 1:03 a.m.

Krayhaft says... #30

There's already a plane that is Norse-mythology based.

The Immersturm on Valla is loosely based on Norse mythology, it seems.

March 8, 2014 2:21 a.m.

Ragnarocker says... #31

Indeed, the Immersturm seems to be the training ground in Valhalla where the Einherjar battle daily, die and are resurrected as preparation for Ragnarok. They just need to build up some more mythos around Valla (Valhalla).

MadScientist says... #32

I would love to see vikings, although the thought of aliens would be pretty cool too.

March 8, 2014 2:49 a.m.

Ragnarocker says... #33

The Eldrazi were closer to Lovecraftian eldritch abominations than aliens.

March 8, 2014 3:25 a.m.

Zialon says... #34

Yeah, keep the Asian stuff in Yu Gi Oh and Weiss Schwartz and Vanguard.

March 8, 2014 11:08 a.m.

Krayhaft says... #35

I'm a huge fan of Eastern mythology, it's just as deep and expansive as Western mythology is. Magic needs to do more of it, but it's too bad they messed up the Kamigawa block.

March 8, 2014 11:19 a.m.

KrosanTusker says... #36

Schuesseled riggers were a joke, they were never going to follow up Steamflogger Boss . They were just mixing in some "never going to happens" in with the hints at the future.

Although I think I read on Blogatog that because so many people were asking about it that they were considering whether to actually do riggers after all. Maybe in Conspiracy!

March 8, 2014 12:59 p.m.

TransMarx says... #37

I would really love a Meso-American themed set, you can have leonin Jaguars, and some crazy sac outlets! I am going to be honest I just want a Nayaish jungle realm with big beasties plus the temple aspects of Zendikar lol

now to the real talk next block seems to be set in the East possibly Mongolian inspired?! Magic the Gathering just trade marked:

  • Warlords of Khanar

  • Khans of Takir

  • Dragons of Takir

March 8, 2014 3:39 p.m.

Ragnarocker says... #38

I like it. There's already a Khan-era Mongolia inspired Plane in Planechase, can't be arsed to search for it.

March 8, 2014 5:29 p.m.

Ragnarocker says... #39

Oh yeah, Mongseng.

March 8, 2014 5:31 p.m.

Schuesseled says... #40

KrosanTusker I know.. Which is why I'd like them to follow it up with some actual cards and lore.

March 8, 2014 6:16 p.m.

Ruric says... #41

It would be nice to go back to chinese mythology like in three kingdoms,

Also i do think god creature type. Has come to stay an we should see it on future with the indestructible characteristic

March 8, 2014 11:20 p.m.

balmung014 says... #42

Well I don't know about mythology but I do know that we will be returning to Zendikar. Unlike what we previously thought from near death experience the eldrazi still rule Zendikar, However the story since Zendikar has had some holes in it especialy about some of the planes walkers.

Anyway with Kiora trying to call up legions of Kraken and other sea creatures to fight the eldrazi, GIdeon going for help on Ravnica it is clear that the battle continues. Wither their is a story to go with it is up in the air. If we do go back though three planes walkers we will most likely see is Sorin, who helped seal the eldrazi in the first place, Kiora a native trying to fight back, and gideon who hs gone for help andmost likely will bring another planes walker with him.

they do need use same mytholodgy twice since eventualy their won't be a lot of ideas, heck it would be nice if for two blocks and maybe one time they stayed on the same plane, not like the shadowmoore lorwyn block.

Heck a return to dominaria, I mean Phyrexia is back on the board one block to prepare and another to attack new Phyrexia.

Sorry for babbling

I like the idea of a Mayan or Aztec set. There's a lot of potential for good cards there. I'm also not opposed to a revisit to Kamigawa: I'm a newer magic player so I wasn't around when it hit the first time. All this said: I hope the next set has nothing to do with History at all. I'd rather see a Magic exclusive world. More room for originality and creativity from the Magic team.

Zialon says... #44

I'd like to revisit Arabian Nights. Loved the flavor there.
