Golgari in Journey, discussion

Spoilers, Rumors, and Speculation forum

Seeing as Golgari was shafted in Born, I'm really hoping we Golgarians get our god and our scry land in Journey.

I've theorized what to expect, and I'd love to hear y'all's input. What would you like to realistically see? Let's see.............

Pharika, God of the Underground

Indestructible

As long as your devotion to black and green is less than seven, Pharika isn't a creature.

At the beginning of your end step, if a creature died this turn, you may return a creature at random from your graveyard to your hand.

Temple of the Defiled

Land

Temple of Mystery enters the battlefield tapped.

When Temple of Mystery enters the battlefield, scry 1. (Look at the top card of your library. You may put that card on the bottom of your library.)

Tap: Add B or G to your mana pool.

Seems very similar to Deadbridge Chant

Pharika is probably the God of Poison or something like that. What mana cost were you imagining on her.

This should probably go in custom cards (or maybe speculation).

they have been really trying to separate the guilds and how work mechanically and how the multicolored cards in theros function, simic goes from +1/+1 counters to a wierd time manipulation thing, (Prophet of Kruphix / Courser of Kruphix ) golgari seems like a deathtouch based sort of thing, with pharika being the patron of gorgons, (almost all of which have deathtouch) and god of poison, i would expect something not graveyard based. but hey you never know, they did print Satyr Wayfinder and Graverobber Spider so maybe.

So far, Theros block has pushed G/B into a "graveyard matters" theme, with things like Commune with the Gods , Nemesis of Mortals , Nighthowler , and Satyr Wayfinder . I would not be surprised at all if the God played up this theme.

I imagined Pharika to be similar to Sheoldred, Whispering One , minus Swampwalking. But that would be a lot of text, wouldn't it?

I dunno, but I can't wait.

Scry land + God. Just give us another G/B cost 2 drop like Lotleth Troll that is decent and I'll be happy.

Personally I expect a Bitterblossom reprint as well.

I agree, Deathtouch or Regeneration would be a likely effect. Hopefully it's something like the burn or sac effect on Mogis though.

A golgari functional reprint of Sheoldred, Whispering One would be sick.

Drop the swampwalk & make it a 4 drop and it'll be nuts!

By the gods, I'm not talking about a functional reprint, it should be worse/differnt. Maybe something like Mogis, but on crack, ala:

"At the beginning of your upkeep, return target creature from your Graveyard to the Battlefield, unless target opponent sacrifices a creature."

It's a lot of black, but black was always the dominant color in Golgari.

Bitterblossom won't be reprinted. Faeries don't exist in Greek mythology.

My guess is that it will have some type of graveyard recursion similar to Phyrexian Reclamation .

The duel color gods don't seem to follow and previous cards abilities I think something in line with "at the beginning of upkeep target creature an opponent controls gets -X/-X where X s the number of creature cards and enchantments in your graveyard" would kind of fit the theme as well. It would be like the anti-Xenagos, God of Revels . A one sided indestructible The Abyss seems like it would be way to powerful.

So far, from what I've seen in the list of reprints in the duel deck, Jace vs. Vraska, Golgari still likes graveyard shenanigans, and counters also (Lotleth Troll , Slitherhead , Corpsejack Menace , etc.), and a few cards are give target creature +2/+2 and another creature -2/-2, so power-stealing could also be another thing since Gorgons are all low-power-high-toughness.

The two-color gods don't have activate abilities like the mono-colored ones, so giving a creature deathtouch is probably out of the question since gorgons already have it, and regenerating creatures could be pretty overpowered.

...so I'm leaning towards powering up creatures like:

  • Switch power/toughness
  • Give a creature +X/+X and another -X/-X
  • Put a +1/+1 counter on a creature, and a -1/-1 counter on another (a good combination of green beasts and black debuffs)

My favorites are the last two.
