It's a weaker Admonition Angel, yay, though to be fair, Angel is a Mythic. I'm sure it'll be pretty good in Limited, but I'm not too impressed.

Hmm It's alright.

August 27, 2015 7:29 p.m.

It's meh. Landfall hype, but I'm not impressed so far.

He'll work great in Patron of the Moon edh!

August 27, 2015 7:47 p.m.

WicKid52 oh my God yes and I have a Patron deck already built.

canterlotguardian: Is it a combo or a control build? My list runs waaayy more towards the combo side of things.

August 27, 2015 7:51 p.m.

Mine's combo with control elements to protect it.

i like it! could be good in EDH, but could also be good in standard mono-U control

Limited bomb.

It could seriously see some Standard play. It's fairly strong at dominating the board, and if they play something bigger than it, this card can just tap it down every turn. I like it.

Eh. In Patron, I'd rather just play Roil Elemental.

GreenGhost says... #15

This can't just tap down a threat every turn. It can tap down a threat for two turns every three turns at best. This only is that effective in mono blue.

NoPantsParade says... #16

You do get instant speed tapping shenanigans with Polluted Delta and Flooded Strand.

True I didn't consider that.

I want Roil Elemental ... That is my second favourite card ;-;

A 4/5 for 5 flyer with upside, seems good. Could be fun in a deck with Pearl Lake Ancient.

August 28, 2015 12:35 a.m.

I see sideboard potential for this. But then again, a 4/5 flyer that can tap down blockers isn't a bad finisher.

For Standard the sphinx's power level is on par with an intro deck rare.

In draft it is the type of bomb that can dig you out of hole by allowing you to do multiple relevant thing on each turn with it's landfall ability.

August 28, 2015 9:16 a.m.

Rasta_Viking29, I would not be surprised if it was an intro deck rare.

canterlotguardian: Link for deck?

August 28, 2015 11:26 a.m.

It's not on TO yet. Shock and awe xD I'll see if I can put it up later today.

The actual card aside, it's neat to see landfall that cares about what type of land enters. Notably, it doesn't have to be a basic island. If this type of effect is on a more Constructed viable card, we can trigger it with shocks and whatnot in other formats.

August 28, 2015 12:11 p.m.

Femme_Fatale says... #26

It can't be put up canterlotguardian, as the BFZ set isn't in the database.

August 29, 2015 12:08 a.m.

@ Caes

Especially when considering that other cards will get extra effects for other land types entering. A shock land could trigger two effects that watch for different land types at once.

I'm considering running it over Icefall Regent in mono blue. Regent's protection is nice, but this has a better body and potentially taps down more stuff if you crack fetches on their upkeep. Icefall Regent seems better overall, though.
