Also added, how do you think Devotion with dual colored gods will be treated?

Dorotheus says... #1

Even a boat.

Although it is possible, I highly doubt that Xenagos will become a boat. A chariot maybe, but not a boat.

Just a piece of trivia: MaRo originally wanted to a do a Dark Jace for this block. I guess it's Xenagos going to the dark side instead. As the theme is gods, heroes and monsters, I can't wait for NYX even more. MaRo also mentioned creatures in that set will be a bit (just a bit) beefier

GoldGhost012 says... #4

Dark Jace? That's something I would really like to see how it fits into the lore, especially since he's the new Guildpact, and what he says goes.

December 30, 2013 2:12 a.m.

no comment except b.s

Anything that gets rid of Jace at this point... I'd be okay with. I'd like to see any other colors get represented that need to, ie -wedges and shards, and a single 5 color PW in the far future.

I do remember reading about MaRo saying creatures will be bigger in an effort to slow down the game... but we're seeing Worldspine Wurm as a 3x in some Green Devotion decks... so I have no idea what that even means anymore.

I'll just point out, since some people seem to be basing part of their argument on this, that "Temple of Abandon" doesn't mean "Abandoned Temple"

The Temple Of Abandon is where people -act- with abandon: They party, they drink, they have a good time.

It's a clever play on words on their part that there's also a great empty chair sitting there waiting to be filled, but that's not the ONLY thing the phrase means.

Wizards has gone extensive lengths to set up that Xenagos will become a god, not having him as a card in Journey would be pulling the carpet out from under us for no good reason. I also don't think he'll inexplicably become black, given that black on Theros is set up with concepts of tragedy and acceptance of fate. Xenagos fits quite nicely in the R/G mindset of throwing a hatchet into the established order of the world so he can feel big and special.

I loathe the notion Bolas will be involved because the last time there was an actual villain who wasn't involved somehow with Bolas was in Shadowmoor with Oona, which was 5 years ago.

On that note, Ajani will probably be G/W. He's not gonna be mono-white with Elspeth in the same block. I don't see him going full-on RW again just to give Elspeth words of encouragement before she German suplexes Xenagod off of a cliff. Green fits because it's more laidback and fitting with a mentor character than Red.

December 31, 2013 10:05 p.m.

as for the Lesser god devotion I saw a fanmade concept that was something along the lines of

"If your devotion to Black is at least 5, (Card Name) is a creature with flying"

"If your devotion to White is at least 5, (Card Name) is a creature with Lifelink"

There's some formatting issues there but I liked the basic idea that they count the devotions separately, and you can get a better god if you can satisfy the devotion for both colors.

It's also my best answer for how to have hybrid permanents not break the gods whilst not running into the issue of making hybrids the only way to activate a god.

Uh, I'm pretty sure Griselbrand and the demons on Innistrad weren't affiliated with Bolas, nor any of the Guilds on Ravnica.

December 31, 2013 10:20 p.m.

Hence my stipulation of "actual villains"

Griselbrand wasn't the villain of Inninstrad: He was trapped in the Helvault doing nothing until Avacyn Restored and then he was immediately killed off by Liliana. With Inninstrad there wasn't so much a concrete antagonist as there was a lack of heroes.

Even less can be said for Ravnica, like, who is honestly the primary villain of Return to Ravnica? The Maze? Lazav? Ral? The main conflict was which guild could win a foot race that would magically fix the gang fights gone out of control.

December 31, 2013 11 p.m.

Dorotheus says... #12

I thought it was gunna be a ploy so they could go back to Ravnica a final time in like, 10 years, for Ravnica Restored.

But we're getting off topic!

December 31, 2013 11:09 p.m.

GoldGhost012 says... #13

The reason Griselbrand isn't the "primary antagonist" is because, as you pointed out, he was locked in the Helvault. The entire Innistrad block is basically the falling action from that point. There's a noticable lack of heroes and villains we're used to in the block, as you again pointed out.

Lazav is definitely the primary antagonist of the RTR block. He attempted to turn the Maze runners against each other, wanting them to each unleash the Supreme Verdict against each other that would destroy the district they were in (and maybe Ravnica itself?) and erase all hope for a Guildpact. Lazav would then turn all the guilds against each other and when they were all weakened, destroy them and take over Ravnica.

Really I could argue that there hasn't been an "actual villain" since Alara, which, coincidently, was Nicol Bolas himself. There was a power struggle in Mirrodin/New Phyrexia between the 5 Phyrexian factions and Tezzeret, and Zendikar was a block about exploration, with another lack of real heroes and villains.

Maybe they will bring the champion mechanic back for Born of the gods. Seems fitting with the heroes and stuff.

December 31, 2013 11:32 p.m.

Dorotheus says... #15

Champion kinda kills Heroic though.

December 31, 2013 11:34 p.m.

It'd be interesting to see Totem Armor come back as it protects Heroic creatures from the removal that will come in Born of the Gods as well as the removal currently floating around.

It kind of elbows Bestow out of the spotlight though so I don't think it's actually gonna happen..

I could see ajani putting in a cat token, or something of the like, maybe elemental. Maybe a 2/2 lifelink cat, and then could come in and destroy target non creature permanent, like bramblecrush...

All I know is I can't wait for the new Vraska in Journey to Nyx.

January 2, 2014 11:53 p.m.

Dorotheus says... #19

I very much second that, but I sadly don't see it happening.

January 3, 2014 7:32 a.m.

APPLE01DOJ says... #20

U don't see the Gorgon planeswalker making an appearance in the Gorgon block?

January 3, 2014 10:33 a.m.

Dorotheus says... #21

As much sense as it makes, no I don't TT
BUT I am veeeerry hopeful.

January 3, 2014 10:44 a.m.

Seeing Vraska would be cool... seeing Pharika is going to be cooler :d

January 3, 2014 11:08 a.m.

shinobigarth says... #23

Vraska is a junior varsity walker, i cant see them printing a new version of her so soon, even if there are other gorgons in Theros. if they did though, Journey into Nyx would be the soonest.

MaRo said no demigods.

huh?

January 5, 2014 7:51 p.m.

cschiller says... #26

MaRo said demigods aren't a thing, but we are going to get ten dual color gods.

January 5, 2014 11:05 p.m.

Dorotheus says... #27

source...?

January 6, 2014 12:28 a.m.

ShadowLand says... #28

Yeah, no kidding cschiller, you gotta back that up with a source. When and where did MaRo say this?

January 6, 2014 1:33 a.m.

Can't find a direct source, but I know I've read it either on his blog or somewhere else the difference between refrencing the Dual colored "Minor" gods over calling them demigods. It's just for specifics really, it doesn't matter what you call them, there are 10 of each color combination and they are gods and not as significatn as the single colored ones.

I did get to find this which he refrences them as minor gods which I'll quote under from wizards.com /magic/magazine/article.aspx?x=mtg/daily/mm/272

"We have ten more gods, all minor gods, coming in Born of the Gods and Journey Into Nyx (five in each) and the creative team did use the Greek gods as inspiration. Note that rather than just make direct correlations, they took bits and pieces from different gods. Thassa, for instance, is a combination of Poseidon and Athena. That said, when the dust settles, there are a lot of Greek gods and only fifteen of Theros's gods, so not every aspect of every Greek god will be represented."

ShadowLand says... #30

Fantastic MadDreams, thanks for that!

January 6, 2014 2:47 a.m.

shinobigarth says... #31

just a minor subtype detail that hardly matters. i really wanna see some Greek "superheroes" at some point like Perseus or Hercules (Heracles technically).

January 6, 2014 3:13 a.m.

cr14mson says... #32

BNG set would be your best bet for that. The theme is gods, heroes, monsters. Theros already released the 'gods'. although there will be multi-colored ones in the next sets (5 per set), they are considered minor. Dunno if we'll be seeing any Greek superheroes though. No such indication, unless maRo has been holding out on his Theros podcasts. if any, expect more Heroic and Bestow cards. the latter supposedly to debut with BNG but they needed something to 'target' their Heroic cards - something about card math/economics

January 6, 2014 6:31 a.m.

Dorotheus says... #33

Well lets look at the Non-God Legends we have now, and deduce what we can about who might be already represented, and who isn't yet popularly represented.

Anax and Cymede
Anthousa, Setessan Hero
Daxos of Meletis
Hythonia the Cruel (Obviously Medusa)
Medomai the Ageless
Polukranos, World Eater
Triad of Fates
Tymaret, the Murder King

Btw, there better be a UB Legendary Siren in NYX.

January 6, 2014 6:54 a.m.

shinobigarth says... #34

i think Anax and Cymede could possibly be Leonidus and his wife, Akros is supposed to be Sparta i believe. not entirely sure who Daxos is supposed to be if he's based on somebody.

January 7, 2014 3:27 a.m.

Erechtheus could represent Daxos of Meletis since Meletis seems to be Athens, and Erechtheus is the only hero I can find/think of who could represent Athens. That, or Achilles, though Achilles is not tied to Athens.

January 7, 2014 9:59 a.m.

shinobigarth says... #36

oh dude if they do an Achilles, he needs to be indestructible except during certain circumstances, something to represent Achilles' heel. maybe indestructible as long as he's equipped or enchanted...?

I was super excited to see the spoiler and find that Xenagos did become R/G, but it is still a significant possibility that his colors change for Journey into Nyx. He seems to have a darker persona and has more darkness around him. Also with the spoiler art for Journey into Nyx, it shows statues of Erebos and what I believe is Pharika broken on the mountainside. I am assuming that he takes on black, and loses either red or green.

Another possibility is that he destroys the other gods and forces Elspeth and Ajani to take the Journey into Nyx to get them back. Just speculation, because I know that they will make bicolored gods for all the guilds, so we will definately see another round of 5 mythic rare gods in the Journey in to Nyx set. From the art though, I do believe that Ajani will definately become G/W.

January 15, 2014 10:27 a.m.

shinobigarth says... #38

you were surprised to see that he was the R/G god? really?!?! what is wrong with you people?! haha

and to tack on your idea of him getting black, what if they did a couple Shards colors and made him a Jund god (B/R/G)? probably not but would be cool.
