Ikoria Teaser
Spoilers, Rumors, and Speculation forum

So recently MaRo put a teaser post on Blogatog about Ikoria since spoilers arent due for a month with some of the more bizarre aspects of it (for example, were getting at least one dinosaur and a SQUIRREL) but one of the things he said really got me wondering what it was (and Im paraphrasing here) "printing a cycle that players have asked about for years" and I cant think of what it is.
It cant be the rest of the swords because theyd be too strong for standard, I cant think of any land cycles theyd do and I for sure cant think of what else theyd do. Any ideas?
I cant really see it tbh. I feel like the swords would be way too strong for standard.

I just assumed finishing the old filter lands, not the lorwyn ones, but the older ones.
March 19, 2020 10:15 p.m.
Cinder Glade and Sunken Hollow are part of an unfinished cycle
Maybe a Magus of the ____ cycle
Ikoria sounds wild so far
March 19, 2020 10:16 p.m.
greyninja that cycle is really new
I'm personally hoping for something out of left field

- " (...) since spoilers arent due for a month (...)"
I believe you have the wrong information, mate.
Ikoria releases April 24th. If we expect a usual spoiler season, it should be starting within a new days or a week at most.

RNR_Gaming despite the set name having "Behemoths" in the title, MaRo has called them "monsters" when referring to the Mutate ability; "build-a-monster" and "create your own monsters".
So... Monsters + Swords = Monster Hunter TCG
Yeeeeees pls

You know... The names of the five Commander packs all elude to the original Nephilim...
Like... almost too perfectly...
Nephilim cycle?? I know a lot of people are upset they aren't Legendary. If any set is going to have obscure creature types, it'll be Ikoroa.

I'm not exactly sure which of the type lines I like best: Dinosaur Turtle, Shark Beast or Elemental Otter. This is some serious simicing going on here.
MinotaurtheMatador: This indeed fits and would be pretty amazing.
March 20, 2020 1:57 a.m.
That fits perfectly and kind of helps with the whole "lack of four color commanders" deal.
March 20, 2020 2:24 a.m.
@shadow63 BFZ is almost 4.5 years old so it's not new but yea the game is 25 years old so it's all perspective
I'd be stoked to see the rest for sure. More duals to fetch for
March 20, 2020 8:11 a.m.
"And a cycle that players have been asking us to make for over ten years"
March 20, 2020 9:02 a.m.
@shadow63 got it, the OP just says "for years"
My bad
I still want that cycle finished
shakes fist in the air towards WotC
March 20, 2020 9:05 a.m.
I wouldn't be surprised to see for the commander product a new twist on the partner mechanic. Where you take two creatures (one or both legendary) and it partners with the other but they are augmented together adding there mana cost together and abilities to make one giant creature.
As to the asked for cycle the Nephilim does fit the bill as well. As most commander preconstructed decks have 3 potential commanders the partner mechanic also fits perfect with this.
March 20, 2020 10:17 a.m.
Otterly elementary, my dear Watson.
There's definitely some Simic Shenanigans going on with that teaser.
As for the cycle, I'll just wait and see what it is, but I'd love to see the Ultimatums from Shards Block. We (technically, since it's a leak) already got Abzan's.

Something to keep in mind is that MaRo says people have been asking for this cycle for "more than 10 years", so we are looking at anything from around Core Set 2010 or sooner. Maybe a few years after, if he is generously rounding.

shadow63, wow, time flies when one is having fun! I certainly feel old, now!
I am very excited about most of this, except for two things: first, why is it necessary to have keyword counters? This game has functioned perfectly well without them, before now, so this seems to be a nonsensical addition to the game, at this point; and, second, I really hope that "shark" does not become its own creature type, since "fish" is more than sufficient; it is already very weird that "snake" and "serpent" are two separate types, when the words have literally the same meanings, so I see no reason for "shark" to be a separate creature type from "fish."

Phaetion, wedge-colored ultimatums would be very awesome, but how reliable is that supposed leak?
March 20, 2020 11:33 p.m.
"And a cycle that players have been asking us to make for over ten years" i'm not sure if players ever asked for these and they defo do not fit plane lore but would be really sweet: Urborg, Tomb of Yawgmoth& Cabal Coffers
March 21, 2020 8:44 a.m.
TypicalTimmy says... #23
We would probably see wedge ults when we return to Tarkir, probably in around three years from now, but Phaetion you mentioned a leak? Do you have details about it, because I can't find anything on it anywhere.

Is that a new rule on the site or something? I thought we posted stuff all the time once spoiler season hit?
Huh. Well, alright. Sorry I asked. Didn't know things changed on here.
March 21, 2020 9:56 a.m.
I want Licids back.... No one has been clamoring for that. Also, creatures that turn into equipment would be great (like a singing sword), since I'm working with cryptic clues, these are more things I love spitballing.
March 21, 2020 10:14 a.m.
MinotaurtheMatador: Pretty much what shadow63 said. I can't discuss it, but I digress.
March 21, 2020 11:24 a.m.
I mean, I think any and all leaks recently have been fakes, but I think that its either the Ultimatums or the Nephilim cycle at this point.
Unless theyre doing something utterly ridiculous that like two extremely vocal players are asking for, like tricolor lieges or something.

lordlovat, I would very much like to see such lands, because it is ridiculous that WotC has not yet printed such a cycle (and, while I am discussing that, a full cycle of Nimbus Maze lands would be very awesome, as well).
TypicalTimmy, I suspected that that supposed leak was fake, but I still am disappointment to know for certain that it is, since it contained a very awesome mana-generating artifact that could have replaced Gilded Lotus in 4- and 5-colored EDH decks.
March 22, 2020 12:48 p.m.
DemonDragonJ says... #32
SynergyBuild, the Shadowmoor/Eventide filter lands are almost entirely better than are the Odyssey filter lands, so there is no need to reprint the latter cycle, but a reprint of the former cycle (all ten of them, not merely five of them, or at least the allied-colored lands) would be very awesome.
As long as I am mentioning that, finishing the Horizon Canopy cycle would be nice, since it currently has six cards, which is rather weird for this game.
March 22, 2020 12:51 p.m.
The leak being fake makes me both sad and furious. I almost want to grill the "leaker" for trolling me. That list looked so good, and now it's just risen my expectation for that one precon too high for my liking.

Note that those posts by Mr. Angry_Bob in the custom card forum linked earlier are from 2008. So, it seems to have been someone who maybe just saw some cool cards and ran with it.
Regardless, I'm upset that we don't have any official spoilers yet. Normally we get unofficial leaks this time around and they begin official spoilers; sending out preview cards, showcasing mechanic videos, etc. I wonder why they are waiting this time? Kind of seems odd.
I haven't been this excited for a set since Tarkir. Kaladesh peeked my interest, and Amonkhet revved my engines with bringing back Minotaur. Ixalan made me giddy with Angrath, but overall these were just highlights of sets and not the set as a whole I was excited over.
I completely sat out Shadows over Innistrad and Eldritch Moon as well as Aether Revolt, and practically all three Ravnica blocks (Guilds, Alliences, War). I bought a single fatpack of Throne and I bought nothing of Theros aside from like five collector packs at Walmart.
Magic has just felt like a grind lately, and the cost is difficult to keep up with.
So Ikoria, a set built for players like me, reignited my interest. I'm a supporter of Alpha Investments on Patreon and have been in talks with Rudy because I'd like to support him by buying the complete set of Precons + probably just two booster boxes.
I don't think I want to spend $220 for 24 packs when I can spend $160 on 72 packs (two booster boxes vs one collectors box)
So I mean, I've already set aside some $350 for the Precons and two boxes for this set because it's the only one I've actually gotten excited for in years. And it just so happens to be the one they change up their spoiler calendar for??
Feels mega bad, man. :(

MinotaurtheMatador, I know that feeling, since I have not participated in any prerelease events, recently, since I rarely ever win them, and I always purchase single cards, never booster packs, since it is rare for a set to contain more than several cards that interest me.
March 22, 2020 8:33 p.m.
Yep, the feelbads on most boosters have been too hefty for me... Though with this more EDH-compatible marketing push. I may find some gambles that make me feel less empty. I actually liked a lot of what Theros offered for me. Dominaria was the last time I actually went for bulk-gambles. That one had so many uncommon legendaries & felt like a spiritual return to my beloved "Legends" expansion, such nostalgia for the days when you opened boosters & always had fun to be found. For now I just kindof chisel away with singles... but maybe this one will have potential
March 22, 2020 11:13 p.m.
Yeah, I haven't gotten much from the recent sets since ELD. A lot of this was my EDH Project, but it also was fatigue and not liking any of the new EDH options. Since I enjoyed the precons a lot more than ones I built, that's what I went with. Not to say I didn't build decks, though. The Women's Day SLD had me interested, but time's my enemy, and I fear it's caught up to me before I can really enjoy the new decks I took the time and effort to polish (The Virus didn't help much, either). At least the precons are timeless and, after the initial cost, requires little expense.
March 23, 2020 8:52 a.m.
Honestly Im a bit excited for this set because Im a huge lore fan and I like seeing new Planes more than old ones. Especially planes with interesting flavor behind them, like Ixalon was.
Also, like were definitely going to get some cool, flavorful creatures. Like a dinosaur turtle and a nightmare squirrel (which Im totally calling Rocky Horror, if you get the joke)
March 23, 2020 6:24 p.m.
DemonDragonJ says... #39
TypicalTimmy, such a creature would not be remotely intimidating, in my mind; it would certainly be hilarious, but not at all intimidating.
March 23, 2020 9:59 p.m.
I like the cut of your jib Timmy. It reminds me of the argument of Ghost Pirate vs. Pirate Ghost.

Perfect! one more Squirrel to put in a squirrel deck!
March 24, 2020 1:26 p.m.
I think we are going to see the return of Banding or something similar to banding or the mechanic for contraptions, except for monsters. This has "causal set" written all over it and I doubt it will be standard legal like how unsanctioned was a disappointment.
March 24, 2020 5:10 p.m.
RNR_Gaming says... #43
I mean I still think it'll be swords. The commander product allows for them to up tick the power of new cards because they wont affect standard or modern.
March 24, 2020 5:16 p.m.
SquirrelPenguin says... #44
the page on the link says: "and a Nightmare Squirrel (Yes, a Squirrel in a Standard-legal set!)" to quote it exactly.
March 24, 2020 5:23 p.m.
RNR_Gaming the one issue with that is that they wouldnt put that powerful of cards into a precon though. Also they probably want the swords to be available to modern players like the rest of the cycle.
March 24, 2020 7:03 p.m.
RNR_Gaming says... #46
Uh commander product doesn't impact any other formats but legacy, Commander and vintage. Unless that's changing with this set, the commander product is the product to amp things up in.
March 24, 2020 8:55 p.m.
DemonDragonJ says... #47
dbpunk, the fact that Sword of Truth and Justice and Sword of Sinew and Steel were printed in Modern Horizons and not a standard-legal set suggests that WotC considers such cards to be too powerful for standard, so, if they print any further cards in that cycle, they will likely be in Commander 2020, and not the main set of Ikoria.
March 24, 2020 9:16 p.m.
The commander decks are going to be like other commander sets. Its just theyre being released together and are correlated.
March 25, 2020 1:46 a.m.
Also DemonDragonJ, thats what I mean. They dont want them in standard, so they wont print them into Ikoria main, but they want them in modern. So probably theyll reprint the rest in the next Modern Horizons set (something Im sure theyll do in a few years) or when they power up standard enough. But they wouldnt print them in a nonmodern set for that reason.
March 25, 2020 1:52 a.m.
TypicalTimmy - The premise has UNset written all over it. Make your own monsters? This is obviously not a set but just a joke or a boardgame of some kind like how Unsanctioned turned out to be.
RNR_Gaming says... #2
Probably the swords. How else are you going to fight monsters?
