Is anyone else as excited as I am for this card?
Not necessarily because of it's ability, but because it's the second "" merfolk ever printed; Razorfin Hunter being first. As soon as I saw it I assumed it would be a "merfolk goblin" part of the razorfin merfolk the same as the Razorfin Hunter. But it's not and that's exciting to see as it could open up some more red merfolk in the future. I doubt wizards will want to make merfolk any stronger though.
Anyway, I see it working nicely in with effects such as cipher, rebound and flashback. Hands of Binding, Hidden Strings, Distortion Strike to name a few. Will definitely be testing this in my deck

Do you guys think it'll see much play in the modern scene?
I will note that there have been Merfolk with activations which kindof count as Merfolk: Crackling Triton, Ceta Disciple, and Whirlpool Warrior.
Anyways, I don't think so? My first instinct is to try Jori in Storm, but then she only draws you one card. So the question is, "Is she good enough for Merfolk?" And when you think about it, Merfolk rarely casts two spells each turn nor does it want to. It'd rather AEther Vial its Merfolk into play. Sure it could get to a turn where you go Cursecatcher into Lord of Atlantis, draw a card, but I don't see that as a great line of play with a 2/3 do nothing in play.
I'm hedging on Jori En not seeing play, but she has potential to be sure.

I'm brewing her for Commander but I don't know what direction I want to take it in. :I

The problem with using her in EDH is that you're stuck playing U/R. Sure, chaining ponders together feels cool and all, but it's not doing much in the grand scheme of things. The whole spell-slinger style of commander really doesn't get you far. Value permanents are what you want to be casting, not some instants or sorceries. Ok, so why not pick a low curve and cast low-costing permanents? Hmm... Ok, but what? Play goblins? I mean, I think I'd rather stick with Krenko at that point even with the reactivity and draw given to me by blue. I'm struggling to come up with a strategy that would actually be decent.

I'm thinking something along the lines of what I did with my Intet EDH deck. Clone, copy, and steal effects. Jori's ability fuels my shenanigans, and I can add in mana rocks to help me keep the chain going.

Hmm. That seems viable. Wheel of Fortune, Whirlpool Warrior, Magus of the Wheel. Arjun, the Shifting Flame and Time Reversal are already in the deck, as is Day's Undoing. Dragon Mage too maybe, for wheel and aggro?

Dragon mage is pretty top heavy for a utility effect. And he takes a turn to trigger.

JWiley129 - I'll agree she doesn't fit into a merfolk deck
TheDevicer - I personally am a huge fan of card advantage and think what she offers is decent.
My main thoughts are a U/R (Izzet) Kiln Fiend style deck. So far in testing it in my deck it's been doing alright. Admittedly there are a lot better 3 drops, Electrolyze and Guttersnipe. Another problem she faces is against 8-rack. Once you hit zero cards in hand it's really hard to get any value out of her.

Yeah, I know, drawing cards is great. But then what? That's kind of my point.

You could work her around some cards with rebound (Cast Through Time) or buyback (Capsize). Makes it really easy to cast a second spell in a turn.

@canterlotguardian - Don't forget, if you're going to use 'Wheel' effects like Wheel of Fortune that you will draw the card from casting your second spell before the 'Wheel' occurs, so you may often just end up discarding your 'advantage'.

Oof. Yeah that is true. Guess I just have to make sure that the wheel spell is the first one I cast that turn.

I feel like if you're going to run her as a commander that you run cantrips with Empyrial Plate and Diviner's Wand maybe even Runechanter's Pike however i think if youre going to go that route that Tibor and Lumia might be better suited since you can easy give them flying with a blue cantrip. just my 2 cents.
