I would link the pictures, but I'll just leave this here
The new hydra out looks like the best pre release promo I've seen in awhile. I could see it seeing some play in standard, but it is a little too slow.

Iroas is very good. He is a solid aggro topper for red or white that will help push damage through. 2nd or 3rd best god so far.
April 7, 2014 10:47 a.m.
I don't see a place for my minotaur deck for Gnarled Scarhide, yea it's a one drop, yea In can bestow it on my opponent's creature but that's just not my cup of tea. Heroes' Bane will get a lot of play in G/R decks. Ajani's Presence is going into my U/W heroic deck. And Iroas, God of Victory makes me want to try our boros
April 7, 2014 10:54 a.m.
Thoughts on heroes' bane? I'm thinking it looks sooper good in limited (like sooper good), but that it just gets outclassed by Kalonian Hydra in standard. And even that isn't seeing much or any competitive play (sadly). It dies to removal. And as stupid an argument that is, a 5-drop 4/4 that does nothing for a turn is not what anyone wants to be doing when they could be playing a 5-drop 6/6 with reach that can be removal the next turn.
I play a deck with a bunch of ramp, and honestly even that isn't enough to get enough mana for this guy to be worth while. The only was would be through a Nykthos strategy, and at that point you should probably just run out a Mistcutter Hydra or Sylvan Primordial or just monstrous a Polukranos, World Eater .
I think it will see zero competitive play unless things come out after now to make him better.

New card spoiled. Not sure I like this one even for limited.
April 7, 2014 1:49 p.m.
Squelching leeches is a wingless Nightmare for less and at uncommon. Maybe it will see play after rotation after Desecration Demon leaves.
April 7, 2014 2:08 p.m.
I think people need to remember that intro pack rares, which are the prerelease promos, are never the best cards in the set. Hero's Bane won't see constructed play, but I might find a place for it in my commander deck.

Iroas will make things interesting, though I kinda like dawnbringer charioteers and the starfish will be prefect in my scry deck
April 7, 2014 2:57 p.m.
I can't find heroes bane. Help anyone? just trying to keep up with the conversation.
April 7, 2014 3:30 p.m.
Rasta_Viking29 thank you. And yeah dawnbringer charioteers is a bomb for sure. So I guess I'm picking white on release night. Lol although green seems strong too. God I hope I can go green white that night. Lol

We are due a red creature in around 10 mins.

So now we get a cycle of creatures that are based around wanting to play mono colors, hmm? Interesting.
April 7, 2014 4:49 p.m.
I wonder if we're going to get a Legendary dragon named Thraxes. The name of the new dragon spoiled certainly hints at that.
April 7, 2014 5:01 p.m.
Rasta_Viking29 says... #20
Thraxes appears to be the name of Purphoros's forge.
From the oracle: "The slam of Purphoros' hammer is its voice, the sparks of his anvil are its breath."

Am I the only one that thinks Iroas, God of Truimph is such a broken god? He makes it so they cant just chump block and you can attack each turn and not have a creature die.
April 7, 2014 5:10 p.m.
I don't think Iroas is broken. I think he is a decent god. Not as good as thassa though. Yeah the ability is pretty nice, but I think he can be worked around. The problem I see with Iroas as a card is he is terribly reliant on creatures, just like the boros guild, and that could be a problem in a meta full of removal. It'll be interesting to see if all the other gods are of similar power level.
April 7, 2014 5:21 p.m.
Extinguish all Hope is bad. Like really-really bad. I won't touch that in standard, especially not after Ravnica vanishes.
Also unplayable in commander, compare to Life's Finale , Decree of Pain and Black Sun's Zenith . Goddamnit Wizards, atleast make it an instant.
April 7, 2014 5:32 p.m.
I have a feeling a constellation deck could be a thing. Hero of Iroas would allow you to dump cheap auras for value. Plus you can use the cheap two and one drop enchantment creatures.
April 7, 2014 5:44 p.m.
TexasDice - I have to disagree. It's a build-around me card, and it's perfectly fair for it's mana cost. Sure it could be 2BB instead of 4BB, and THAT would be constructed playable, but I think it will see some play in the enchantment deck. Remember, WotC pushed all the enchantment matters cards to JOU for more punch.
April 7, 2014 5:44 p.m.
McSleuthburger says... #27
eh if anything I wouldnt surprised to see constellation decks start to pop up
April 7, 2014 6:01 p.m.
JWiley129, If you play mediocre creatures, just to make a mediocre card less bad, you'll end up with a mediocre deck. From the available enchantment creatures in Black, one rare is not even remotely playable in such an archetype (Nighthowler ).
So, why force a hard to splash wrath effect, that turns out dead in some boardstates and also forces you into a color with no enchantment support?
I was right about Prime Speaker Zegana and Flame-Wreathed Phoenix being unplayble in constructed. And I believe I will be right againt.

Rasta_Viking29 says... #29
Flame-Wreathed Phoenix
is far from unplayable. It just doesn't work all that great with Desecration Demon
still hovering around right now.
April 7, 2014 6:14 p.m.
TexasDice - From what you said, I'm going to assume you're a Spike through-and-through. With that perspective in mind, I can see why Extinguish All Hope isn't a good card. I acknowledged that 6 mana for a pseudo-wrath isn't great, 4 mana would be better for constructed play. But not every card needs to be constructed playable. But I'll enjoy that card anyways, because Magic is a game, and games are about having fun.
April 7, 2014 6:43 p.m.
Rasta_Viking29 I naturally meant unplayable for now. Right now, it is really amazing for budget decks. I don't know if it will boom next season, but I can't close it out completely in the future.
JWiley129 You are mistaken, but also close to my train of thought. The EDH player in me is more disappointed than the standard contestant. My mind is craving for a playable replacement for Damnation, since the card becomes more expensive with every new set.
Back on topic, I like the constellation mechanic. Rares like Eidolon of Blossoms promise fun drafting around maximum value. I'm on the fence about Dawnbreaker Charioteers though. I think the card is a bit too good in Sealed, especially if it turns out to be the white pre-release promo.
April 7, 2014 9:30 p.m.
I want a foil copy of extinguish all hope for the art alone.
April 7, 2014 9:57 p.m.
I like Keranos. In an Izzet burn deck, at the top of the curve, he lessens the effects of land draws in the late game by giving you an extra draw, and double the output of your burn spells. Five mana might be pushing it for him to show up in constructed, but he seems like a swell card.
I also like flash-Howling Mine .

Dictate of kruphix really looks like something I can get behind. Just going to ahve to figure out where it works best. Come onnnn more good simic stuff!
April 8, 2014 12:21 a.m.
I'm liking the Dictates. Dictate of the Twin Gods will be great in a Gisela, Blade of Goldnight commander deck. Keranos is pretty cool.
April 8, 2014 12:22 a.m.
Dictate of the Twin Gods is pretty cool, both for the effect, and the fact that Mogis and Iroas are fighting.

JOY!
I don't care what anyone says, R/U has a kick ass god. It's perfect for an Izzet counter burn deck. I'm am totally going to brew up a Modern deck for Keranos just for the hell of it.
April 8, 2014 12:24 a.m.
Well that's sure a card. Big note - due to the wording this gets around hexproof, hell it even gets True-Name Nemesis .

Looking at Godsend thinking Soldier of the Pantheon points it at any huge creature in limited saying "this...is my BOOMSTICK"

Dictate of the twin gods is a better Xenagos, God of Revels
Keranos looks sweet. Presaling for $25 on SCG is bonkers though. I see this as a better Assemble the Legion , together they'll be great.
Dictate of Kruphix is repeatable card advantage at 3 mana, providing 2 devotion, and allowing mana for Dissolve to be left open till EoT.
BW creature looks good for W/B Control in Limited,

So, I thought Underworld Coinsmith read "Pay 1 life, each opponent loses one life" without the mana cost and freaked out for a second "NOOO THEY BROKE THE FORMAT, EVERY DECK WILL BE TURN TWO WINS WITH THIS CARD FOR A WEEK UNTIL IT GETS THE BAN HAMMER" but then I looked again and gave a big sigh of relief.

But on the other side of things, I am going to brew around Keranos until I make him work. Izzet burn/control, it's going to be a thing just you watch. (Well, by "a thing" I mean I'm going to run it) Not to mention he is going to look SICK foiled up. Probably going to brew up an EDH deck around him as well...I just really like him, okay haha. I'm actually liking some of these spoiled cards this time around, unlike BOTG...
April 8, 2014 8:12 a.m.
Give me a few more playable constellation cards, and I see a sphere of safety, constellation deck in my future

Thoughts on Dictate of the Twin Gods and how it makes Boros Reckoner
INSANE!!!:
Dictate of the Twin Gods, the amplifier that Boros Reckoner was missing
