I would link the pictures, but I'll just leave this here

I was excited before anything was released for my mono-white enchantment deck. I figured after Brimaz gave white their weenie power, that the other kind of white build would get a good benefit. Instead, Godsend (which I figured would be a thing). More weenie shtuff. Darn! Plus, Elspeth pretty much denies Ajani from being mono-W. Double darn! Contellation would be great for the deck, but my psychic self foresees this:

Eidolon of Likely BenefitEnchantment Creature- Spirit3WConstellation- When or another enchantment enters the battlefield, you gain 2 life.

Because that's all white gets. No draw (already a card anyway), no damage, no whatever. Just life, which is kind of overkill in any deck it would be in.

Could somebody link a pic of Sage of Hours here?

At any rate:

1U 1/1 Mythic Human Wizard.

Heroic, gets a +1/+1 counter.

"Remove all +1/+1 counters from Sage of Hours: For each five counters removed this way, take an extra turn after this one."

This'll be sick tech in my Vorel of the Hull Clade EDH deck, but other than that, it's meh. Makes me excited though.

Vorel of the Hull Clade +Ajani, Mentor of Heroes!+Sage of Hours = Another nifty (nearly) infinite combo for turns that can explode about T4-T5 with the right ramp, T7+ realistically usually.

Also, I'm calling the Selesnya/Naya Monsters being a force within the next year right now. So many good creatures with so much card draw.

I feel like Wizards wasn't even trying with Ajani's -8 ability. Whenever I hear about it, I picture them all in a room at around 3 in the morning and thinking, We need to find a good ability for his last effect. Someone yells "Well, what do the Selesnya Do?". Another would yell, "Populate and gain life?". Then someone would answer "We could make it five populates?" Another would reply "No, we want him to be relevant in standard." after about 20 minutes of thinking they would say "How about gain 25 or 50 life." "No that's not enough, if we gain life, it has to be ALL the life." (Brief Pause) "How about 100 life?" They would vote that it is Perfect and for some random reason keep the idea.

April 9, 2014 10:38 p.m.

erabel says... #8

BENBREES: Um. Ajani has always gained life as part of his repertoire, so they wanted that somewhere. It's something that a Timmy would get really excited at, and a Johnny would really want to break. It's something that gets a lot of players excited, and it's only got five words (100="one hundred"). It's elegant, powerful, and, to some extent, flavorful. What more do you want?

April 9, 2014 10:42 p.m.

erabel says... #9

Also, according to Maro, the ult had been "You gain 100 life" from the start of the card's design. So they didn't just throw it together at the last minute and said "sure, that'll do".

April 9, 2014 10:43 p.m.

JWiley129 says... #10

BENBREES - Ajani's ultimate is simple and elegant. Not every planeswalker ultimate needs to be complicated and brain-crushing. "You gain 100 life" is a perfect ultimate for a G/W planeswalker who generates card advantage and buffs your dudes. Sometimes, simpler is better.

I have alredy decided that I wanna be the player that makes this guy work. II'm sure I won't be the only one trying but I want to be "The" guy that did it.

That might seem very Johnny of me and that doesnt happen often(at least for me). But when a card catches my eye I go all out.

With the ramp of G/U a Cyclonic Rift after playing Kruphix is probably a turn away anyway. I do think a high powered SRev would be awesome but one cool interaction doesn't justify an addition to the deck.

Alright so I've obviously been waiting on pins and needles for Kruphix. MY deck that I've been building was made to run with or without him, but I really strived to create something heavy in devotion to make better use of him once he was released. I figured he would be 5 cmc so that was no let-down to me. I don't think he's bad. In face, he's really good. His two abilities are rarely seen and incredibly powerful...IF your deck is made to utilize them That's where I'm having a hard time being overjoyed.

Here was my mental rundown as I read him:

"You have no maximum hand size."

Alright. Simple enough. That is only relevant *at all if you are a deck focused on drawing tons of cards on a regular basis. Two cards immediately came to mind from green and blue. The first was the newly announced Dictate of Kruphix, which fits well due to high devotion cost. The second was Prime Speaker Zegana , which not only can draw crap tons of cards in a midrange deck but also provides a whopping 4 devotion to Kruphix, almost making him a creature on her own. That's relevant right there.

"Various words meaning you get to save up lots of mana and use them at any point in the game woo!"

This is where things get tricky. What kind of situations call for this? The first thought is a situation where you need to cast a high cmc spell or an X cost spell. Cyclonic Rift , Polukranos, World Eater , Mistcutter Hydra , Vastwood Hydra (meh), and even something like bestowing a Boon Satyr all fit into this sort of category of G/U cards who want this effect.

The second situation that this becomes relevant is when you have a full grip of spells and you really want to cast them all on the same turn. Enter Prime Speaker Zegana again. I can't speak enough of the synergy between these two. I think this is where things get interesting.

Prophet of Kruphix is absolutely a powerhouse with this in toe. The problem I have with that is the problem I just have with Prophet of Kruphix . You don't want multiples, it's super fragile, it's asks you to set yourself up for a blowout, it doesn't attack well, etc. Is it worth it in a Kruphix build? I'm starting to think no, sadly.

Lastly, if a deck is curving out and always using up its mana, you're not saving any. But you also just don't save any at all until Kruphix is down, regardless. So maybe that doesn't matter too much.

My final verdict for the time being is that it can and will be serving a support role in some decks as a 1-2-of in simic and MAYBE bant. Maybe. It would be something similar to Xenagod's role in Monsters right now. I think it works best in a midrange deck and not control, but I could be wrong. Sphinx's Revelation is great, but I don't think it is enough to make running three colors reasonable. I will be testing with him and I hope he woks well! :)

Launch the fleet is such a good heroic card. Its really the card I was waiting for to really push heroic to be better. Not only will you get a ton of triggers, you'll also have a ton of attacking weenies.

I also like the land as well. I could see it seeing play.
