Spootyone I know! That would be bomb! People need to think deeper, like how CastleSiege said it triggers Constellation

Pharika is going to be played in Junk. Let me be the first one to say it but I know it is true because she synergizes with quite a bit.

EKGwins - The would skip their draw step though so they still only get one card and you get a 5/5 flier.

Also whyplay Spirit of the Labyrinth with him when you can play Fate Unraveler and put them on a 3 turn clock.

I think these three combo pretty nicely. I'm always a fan of giving my opponent an ultimatum that could hinder them either way.

I mean, sure, you don't get the same effect as Deathrite Shaman or Scavenging Ooze , but if you did then you'd still have people saying "why would I use that when I can just use my 1/2 drop?" She is a 3-drop god. Those are hard to pass up. They mean you get to devote and swing with them earlier and this is INCREDIBLY true in B/G because those two have more colored mana symbols than probably any two colors available. Just imagine if Karametra were a 3-drop? She would be attacking all the time! This is how it can be for Pharika if people want it to be that.

If you don't want to attack with your gods then you could always check out the ones I've been looking forward to... Karametra, God of Harvests ...Kruphix, God of Horizons . I'll be over in the corner playing edh since I think that's the only format WOTC wants me to play in lol...

Ultimaodin I am not sure I follow you, I may be missing something. If you have Spirit of the Labyrinth out with Master, they would draw a card on your turn, and then when it becomes their turn they would again draw the usual one card per turn.

April 14, 2014 1:21 a.m.

CastleSiege says... #7

You're right EKGwins, I overlooked that. It'd be pretty funny to play it with Notion Thief though :P

Some shade of modern dredge for Pharika that runs stuff that gives all/your opponent's creatures -1/-1 or more? Or even a very removal heavy version of B/G with these effects? She has potential but I'm still disappointed.

April 14, 2014 1:46 a.m.

Bromjunaar says... #9

Illness in the Ranks anyone? Not ideal, but it could work for denying your opponent gy shenanigans.

And, while expensive, in modern there is Curse of Death's Hold and Night of Souls' Betrayal .

Also, she happens to be in the same colors as a certain B/G charm (Golgari Charm ), as well as Drown in Sorrow and Bile Blight .

If I find one during prerelease and if dredge is still a massive problem, I might try her as a one of for that matchup.

Anyone thinks Master of the Feast will be played in Mono-Black aggro? or is the card advantage the other player is getting is too much for it to see play? :S

April 14, 2014 2:02 a.m.

kmcree says... #11

As I said in the other thread: So you're going to spend mana to exile their threats and give them death touch blockers, and then spend more mana to get rid of those death touch blockers? Why not just use something like Crypt Incursion or Bojuka Bog (in modern) and save yourself like 6 mana?

April 14, 2014 2:12 a.m.

NixTheThird says... #12

I think Ultimaodin is on to something with his Master of the Feast and Fate Unraveler idea. It fits the flavor of Master of the Feasts so well that each card drawn hurts more. It's purely the ideal circumstance of course, but it's another spin on the card that doesn't involve a purely aggro deck like Snowstorm suggests. However, I think that it will almost be exclusively played in aggro. I mean a 5/5 flyer for 3 is just too juicy to not to throw in the current decks. The opponent must answer it; gaining one card per turn is not worth 5 damage swung at your face per turn.

At worst it gets killed the second turn it's on the field, after the opponent has gotten their free card. Which is bad... but they still need to burn removal for it.

The Chimera's flavor text is awesome. And mono-red pseudo-Blast of Genius !

April 14, 2014 6:32 a.m.

CastleSiege says... #14

Riptide Chimera could be pretty sweet as a Constellation enabler, especially if the enchantments you're bouncing have ETB abilities. Let's hope Constellation turns out to be decent.

April 14, 2014 7:59 a.m.

Red mythic is 1/3? What a waste of Double Strike and Trample...

I love how that Scry 3 thing is becoming a cycle.

And I want that Riptide Chimera. If only for the flavor text.

Rasta_Viking29 - I think that a 1/3 is fine for the Prophetic Flamespeaker as any more power and he would draw you a card every turn. 1/3 is perfectly balanced for his abilities.

That Thaumaturge also makes Curse of the Swine , Glimpse the Sun God , Aurelia's Fury and Clan Defiance rather silly.

April 15, 2014 12:27 a.m.

CastleSiege says... #25

Dritz I don't think Thaumaturge works with those cards since you need to pay X in order to use them/target something in the first place.

April 15, 2014 12:49 a.m.

Ultimaodin says... #26

Lets not ignore how stupid this is with Launch the Fleet

April 15, 2014 12:50 a.m.

NerdPounder says... #27

No, you declare, "Curse of the Swine for X" then price reductions are checked and you pay the difference. It does make those cards stupidly good.

April 15, 2014 1:10 a.m.

Dritz says... #28

From the spoiler for The Thaumaturgest.

"Too bad there's no spell that taps all of their creatures and heroics all of yours for a single mana, right? That would be crazy.

Well, (re)introducing a little card we planted back in Born of the Gods: Glimpse the Sun God!

Glimpse the Sun God

For each mana you spend, you tap a creature. Except... each creature you target makes it cost one less! So, for a single mana, you can target and tap any number of creatures. And thanks to the declare attackers step, you can cast it after you attack but before your opponent can blockmeaning all of your heroic triggers trigger again (you can target tapped creatures just fine and they will still be attacking) and all of your opponent's creatures will become tapped."

April 15, 2014 1:10 a.m.

beakedbard says... #29

Battlefield Thaumaturge is going to be fun to tinker with a bit. It can turn a spell into a mass heroic enabler plus the soldiers for one mana. Also it makes two spells only cost one mana to tap out your opponents creatures at instant speed is kinda nice. Last but not least it can gain hexproof fairly easily as well. All in all i like this card.

Guys, they printed Atlas! And the white one's from another language!

April 15, 2014 6:39 a.m.

Dritz says... #31

Although I know Aegis is a playable card cicumstantially I cannot help but feel remarkably let-down that the aggro two drop I was hoping for in this slot turned out to be this. Sure, it has its uses but it isn't replacing Precinct Captain , Spirit of the Labyrinth or any of the other usable W two drops IMO. (Truefire Paladin , Wojek Halberdiers , Daring Skyjek , Fleecemane Lion , Voice of Resurgence )

As for Bearer it is a very fun reference and I really like it. I just wish it was a tiny bit more constructed playable so I could be kinda goofy with it.

Rayenous says... #32

Battlefield Thaumaturge ....

In Standard, its over powered with...
Curse of the Swine
Glimpse the Sun God
Gridlock
Aurelia's Fury
Launch the Fleet

That's 4 cards that put a 1/1 token into play attacking for each creature you control, for 1CMC... 8 cards in a deck which tap all of opponents creatures for 1CMC... 4 that Exile all their creatures for 2CMC... and 4 that deals X damage to each target creature and opponent where X is the number of creature being targeted, which can still be further pumped.

Also very good with
Flames of the Firebrand - 3 damage divided as you want for 1CMC
Sea God's Revenge - Return 3 creatures to owners hand for 3CMC, scry 1.
Dauntless Onslaught - 2 creatures get +2/+2 for 1CMC.
Frost Breath - 2 creature tap, and don't untap, for 1CMC.
Sudden Storm - 2 creature tap, and don't untap, for 2CMC, scry 1.
Clan Defiance - Up to 6 damage can be free, as it will be reduced by 2, and deals damage to 3 targets.
Turn / Burn - Turn something into 0/1 and 3 damage to another for 3CMC.
Hunt the Weak +1/+1 counter and fight for 2CMC.
Any Strive spell that had 1 or more generic mana in it's strive cost.

Most other spells in Standard will either have no effect, or be reduced by one (which can still be powerful).

This will likely fit best in B/W or American... with Heroic.

April 15, 2014 8:24 a.m.

Rayenous says... #33

er.... U/W, not B/W.

It would be fairly useless in B/W, without U.

April 15, 2014 8:25 a.m.

Aegis is amazing. Hosses burns tempo and essentially gains you a little life since he eats a spell. Stops Chandra, Pyromaster , Thoughtseize , Fanatic of Mogis , and cards like them from using their abilities. Seems good in Legacy and Modern.

April 15, 2014 8:27 a.m.

Rayenous says... #35

I would love to have Xenagos, God of Revels out, and play "Bearer of the Heavens"...

I'm either attacking with a 20/20, or you kill it with an instant speed removal, and wipe the board.

April 15, 2014 8:54 a.m.

Rayenous says... #36

I was just looking at cards... (As I've been doing all day, when I should be working), and came across this fun little interaction for Esper.

Use Daring Thief , to give your opponent "Aegis of the Gods"...

Now Athreos, God of Passage just returns your creatures to your hand... because you can't target your opponent with the triggered ability.

Also works really well against people playing Athreos, God of Passage , because even if it's not animated, you can trade it for an "Aegis of the Gods" due to it being an Enchantment.

April 15, 2014 1:53 p.m.

Spootyone says... #37

What do you all think of this? Seems a lot less balaned than the others in the cycle so far. An instant speed permanent double-anthem effect is actually a really powerful ability to have in a deck.

April 15, 2014 4:11 p.m.

Rayenous says... #38

I'm not sure I would call it "more" or "less" balanced... the ability is for your creatures only, unlike the other Dictate's we've seen... but it's not as powerful as the others either.

Compared to card advantage, doubling mana, or doubling all damage... (I'm seeing a "2" theme here.... double mana, 2 cards, double damage)... +2/+2 just isn't as overwhelming... certainly can be in the right deck, but it's a lot more board state dependant.

April 15, 2014 4:18 p.m.

Spootyone says... #39

Yeah, I can understand that. Though I'm really starting to like G/W mid a little more after seeing Ajani and stuff like this.

With this especially, one could potentially make a deck of low-drop and still powerful G/W creatures and use this card as an instant-speed way to deal with decks running larger creatures. It also makes all your late game top decks of mana dorks less of a problem since they're either 1-drop 3/3s or 2-drop 2/5s. Not good against aggro and not particularly attractive to bring in against control, but a way to get around jund monsters is nice.

GoldGhost012 ~ spooty was referring to the flavor text on Riptide Chimera .

@Spootyone ~ nice job sir. Although I think "look what I made! Take that Thassa" would have been better. Lol

April 15, 2014 5:27 p.m.

Spootyone says... #44

Lol. I laughed at both responses to that actually. Kiora seems like a cool chick but lately she's been feeling a little bit more like a stubborn younger sibling than a replacement for Thassa. Also, does she know a 5/5 for 6 with a downside is not something to be proud about?

April 15, 2014 5:58 p.m.

GoldGhost012 says... #45

Haha, I laugh every time I look at Riptide Chimera . I kinda want a playset for the flavor text alone.

April 15, 2014 6:17 p.m.

Bellock86 says... #46

@Spootyone ~ The new octopus is a common after all. And I think the idea is the wording of the downside. "Unless defending player controls an enchantment or enchanted permanent". This would mean that the person controlling the octopus could enchant something the opponent controls and viola. No more restriction. The card is still not playable though. Lol
