I really want to test with Font of Fertility in constructed. Land searching is a lot better than mana dorks in this format and this one is cheap enough to be good, I think.

GoldGhost012 says... #8

Hmm, I wonder if the Hind will be good enough for Constructed when RTR rotates...

April 16, 2014 12:36 a.m.

Spootyone says... #9

Positives of Golden Hind:

  • 2 power on an easy-to-cast/splash mana dork

Negatives of Golden Hind:

I honestly can't see this getting a ton of constructed play -- even after rotation. Caryatid and voyaging satyr beat it in many ways, but I guess if someone isn't afraid of getting their T2 mana dork met with a removal spell, the 2 power is nice.

Dritz says... #10

They made the R/W uncommon a Strive pump spell and a Sorcery? I have to say that I'm getting miffed that they are so keen to print these cards into a format that is loaded with huge amounts of targeted removal. Hell, this thing doesn't even go well with Battlefield Thaumaturge which they just talked up a bunch. I'm not happy this was printed instead of something that is stand-alone aggressive like Lightning Helix or really any R/W creature that they could have made up. Sure, not everything can be a winner but that isn't much consolation right now.

April 16, 2014 12:44 a.m.

kmcree says... #11

@Dritz: I agree, the sorcery aspect of it kind of sucks. But also, it gives vigilance, which wouldn't do you any good if you cast it at instance speed after attacks. I think its a mediocre card, but might see a little play in an aggro heroic deck.

April 16, 2014 1:57 a.m.

Dritz says... #12

This is how I feel about it, particularly. While the Vigilance is not helpful at instant speed the nice thing is that you can still cast an Instant at Sorcery speed with no reasonable drawbacks. Making it always a Sorcery is just bothersome to me as Sorcery combat shenanigans aren't usually that good.

Apart from that I also don't like how the card fits into the rest of the set as the set favors mono-colored or mono-colored with a splash but this card makes you pay evenly in two enemy colors, at full rate no less.

Beyond that it has things going right for it: Fantastic art, great name, awesome flavor text, bad functionality

That is my two cents on the matter. /rant haha

April 16, 2014 2:10 a.m.

kmcree says... #13

Haha I pretty much agree with everything you said. The one thing I will say in the card's defense is that R/W heroic looks like it has a few decent pieces. Its possible it could become a thing, and this card could (maybe) find a place there.

I think any heroic deck should have blue, because Battlefield Thaumaturge . I think he could possibly break a heroic deck

Font of fortunes looks a little better then Divination , it's better in the two drop spot, leaving you mana at 3 for a counter/kill and can crack it as needed on the end step. I like it.

April 16, 2014 12:21 p.m.

Spootyone says... #16

I think the opinion of font of fortunes will be the same as font of fertility in that they arent constructed powerhouses but fill slots that previously had nothing better. We currently have no Rampant Growth to be better than font of fertility and no Think Twice to be better than font of fortunes, so using these as the "next best thing" could be something that happens.

April 16, 2014 1:17 p.m.

Rayenous says... #17

@Spootyone

I think that that will be the general concept at first...

Personally, I like looking at the differences and discovering better uses.

Divination that can count toward Devotion until used might make it a little more powerful than Divination in the current Standard Meta.

The Black Font (1B / 3B, sac: return 3 creatures from gy to hand) and White Font (1W / 2W, sac: gain 7 life), are the least useful.... I feel neither will be played outside EDH (if that)... even if a constructed deck is heavy into recurring things or life gain, I can't see these making the cut.

April 16, 2014 1:27 p.m.

beakedbard says... #18

There's also the fact they trigger constellation and other enchantment based effects which could prove to be useful. At first i didn't like the look of them but now i think through how standard current is the U and G fonts will probably see some play.

@Spootyone agreed that it's not Think Twice but it fills that slot much more nicely then Divination

Mesmeric Fiend is back, I still play him! Black is dirty...

April 17, 2014 12:38 a.m.

Spootyone says... #32

Lol yeah they got it. Ah...It's going to be nice play midrange without having to worry about playing red or black. From my experiences over the past many months, GW mid needed two things: Removal and a way to get card advantage. And now we have that! We have the fixed O-ring and the new Ajani to help out. I'm very excited for the rest of this set now. Perhaps a return of Archangel of Thune and the revenge of "Conclave Counter-Cutter?" :D

April 17, 2014 12:39 a.m.

Dritz says... #33

I'm sad that Deicide is being printed, honestly, The god I was looking forward to finally sees the light of day and then this thing comes about. Sadness. I mean. I like that the decks I can play can play it anyway but it still annoys me.

Also, what the hell with Brain Maggot being a standard version of Tidehollow Sculler . All the 'what' on that one.

April 17, 2014 12:42 a.m.

GoldGhost012 says... #34

Oh right, Brain Maggot is an uncommon.

Reowned Weaver

G

Spootyone says... #37

Between brain maggot, Duress and Thoughtseize , I would imagine that black definitely has the stranglehold on control right now. Against other decks...I would still imagine it would see play. It seems better MB than thoughtseize since you don't have to worry as much about aggro taking advantage of the life loss.

Of course, I didn't play magic when either Mesmeric Fiend nor Tidehollow Sculler were legal, so idk what sort of way they were played.
