Just caught up with Origins Spoilers... wow

I've been in London and Paris for the last two weeks-ish and haven't been able to keep up with spoilers (largely due to my phone being pickpocketed). I just took a few minutes to look through it all and... holy shit. This looks like a really really strong set. It looks like numerous cards are playable across all formats. I'm very excited. Here are the cards I think are the most hype-worthy (to me, anyway) starting from just after Kytheon was spoiled:

Magmatic Insight
Chief of the Foundry
Artificer's Epiphany
Titan of Erebos
Hangarback Walker
Evolutionary Leap
Despoiler of Souls
Animist's Awakening
Hallowed Moonlight
Infinite Obliteration
Harbinger of the Tides
Goblin Piledriver
Vryn Wingmare
Alhammarret's Archive
Archangel of Tithes
Day's Undoing
Tainted Remedy
Honored Hierarch
Languish

All of these seem VERY relevant for Standard, Modern, EDH, or in the case of a few even Legacy/Vintage (although I'm nowhere near an expert in those). SO not to make a new official spoiler discussion or anything, but got damn... are you as impressed as me?

If you had to bet on one card for modern and one for legacy that would influence the meta most of all the cards currently spoiled, what would they be?

My guess is Molten Vortex for modern and Harbinger of the Tides for legacy. To be honest though, Kytheon, Hero of Akros  Flip is up there too.

For a standard set, yes I'm impressed.

For Modern it's a tie between magmatic insight and Evolutionary Leap. For Legacy, Hallowed Moonlight seems very good. I don't know the deck much at all, but could Titan of Erebos be used in manaless dredge?

Jay: Legacy already has Containment Priest. I'm pretty sure Hallowed Moonlight is strictly worse.

Jay says... #8

Not strictly. It cantrips. It can be Snapcaster Mage'd.

Oh, and it hits tokens. Sorry Empty the Warrens.

Is it just me or does anyone else think Jace, Vryn's Prodigy  Flip gonna be broken in modern? Especially with Tome Scour?

July 2, 2015 11:49 p.m.

He doesn't need Tome Scour. Thought Scour or just playing the game is better.

Zeondragon: casting a useless 0/2 on turn 2 in order to flip him T3 IF he survives is a terrible idea. If Jace sees play in modern (which he probably won't), he'll be used as removal bait and nothing else.

July 3, 2015 8:28 a.m.

Jace won't see play, and won't be broken.

Happy to see piledriver is back. This set may be worth alot.

July 4, 2015 9:20 p.m.

I see robots, correction, artifact creatures there. Good artifact creatures even. I see a whole artifact sub-theme coming this year. Maybe I can even hope for charge counters. Those were fun. All my circuits are filled with happiness. beep. (read in GlaDOS voice)

I'm really not getting the hype around Titan of Erebos. He seems really bad. They could have printed him at Uncommon and I never would have thought twice about it. Triple black, a decent body but no combat abilities, barely relevant indestrucible, and a really specific recursion effect all come together to form a horribly inconsistent card that is hard to cast and only works if the stars align.

July 5, 2015 8:02 a.m.

@ VTMan72

Erebos's Titan passes the vanilla test and has no drawbacks. Really bad is probably not an appropriate evaluation. But I don't think that it deserves to be hyped either.

By the way, is it WOTC that uses apostrophes incorrectly on a regular base or is that me?

July 5, 2015 8:18 a.m.

VTMan72 says... #18

While it does technically pass the vanilla test, it is still 1BBB which is super hard to cast outside of Mono-Black. This might deserve to be a rare at most but nothing more. It is kind of a waste of a mythic slot to me.

And yes. WOTC disrespects the apostrophe all the time.

July 5, 2015 8:29 a.m.

Please explain how they misused the apostrophe in "Erebos's Titan" before I unnecessarily say something.

July 5, 2015 10:18 a.m.

@ CharlesMandore

This is going horribly off-topic, but since I started it, I'll just try to wrap it up.

The correct spelling would be "Erebos' Titan".

The apostrophe would be used to replace the additional s in this case. If one were to be absolutely precise, the apostrophe is technically in the correct place. The letter it is supposed to replace is still there though. So it's just inserted randomly and not serving its purpose.

They do things like this all the time, for example when they use the "(name)s (object)" card name structure but then spell it "(name)'s (object)" instead. Example Pharika's Mender

I think they do it mainly to avoid the ambiguity of meaning that comes with the correct spelling, and because so many people can't set apostrophes properly anyway.

We derailed this conversation so hard.

@Triforce-Finder

Had you stopped at your explanation of how the apostrophe was misused on Erebos's Titan, or as you pointed out, a superfluous "s" was added following the correct placement, your endeavor to wrap this up would have most likely succeeded.

You went on to mention Pharika's Mender as another card where the apostrophe was misused. I see nothing wrong with this card, grammatically at least. The Mender is a worshipper or acolyte of Pharika and the apostrophe is used to indicate possession or ownership.

In an effort to prevent any further derailment of this thread, would you please post your reply, if you have one, on my profile page? Anyone who is interested can just follow the conversation there.

July 5, 2015 4:06 p.m.

More cards have been revealed in this article.

Ghirapur Gearcrafter, Whirler Rogue and Reclusive Artificer.

That is not exactly how I envisioned the artifact theme to play out, but still quite interesting. I wonder if metalcraft will have cameo or two.

I could easily do without the creatures that benefit from having another one of the exact same creature around. Way too circumstantial, and an auto-pass in a draft, I guess.

Languish looks painful. I think I want some.

@ revwildo

Well, I did mention that many can't use apostrophes properly, right? Seems that there's a rule I got wrong too. Up to this point, that is. Thanks for pointing it out.
