Argeaux Well, we've yet to see if this is the case, but the presence of an (unplayable) Chandra card in a planeswalker deck would probably mean that there's no Chandra in the actual block.

Hey, what if Garruk was born on Kaladesh? Do we have a name for the plane he was actually born on?

genericaura says... #2

So they just revealed a bunch of new stuff (new Eqgyptian Plane) but they showed some stuff that applied here too. When Dovin's art was revealed earlier, it was larger than a usual PW art probably so he could be used as the box art for a PW deck and then cropped down for the card. Chandra's art has been revealed and she doesn't have the larger art so she's probably in the set.

AgentGreen says... #3

There's a tiny spoiler out there; confirming that Chandra is on Kaladesh

Her card name is Chandra, Torch of Defiance; with the art of it. Likely will see more on Friday when PAX West starts up including the card itself

DemonDragonJ says... #9

Since Kaladesh has a strong focus on artifacts, is it safe to presume that there shall be a greater-than-average number of mana-generating artifacts in the block?

September 1, 2016 3 p.m.

DarkLaw says... #10

DemonDragonJ Maybe. So instead of one mana rock per set, we could get two! Wonderful!

I mean, seriously Wizards. Give us a different standard. Too many creatures.

September 1, 2016 3:23 p.m.

griz024 says... #11

Id love a more spell based standard, but it seems most people are if a different mindset. Oh well, at least i have edh.

September 1, 2016 3:25 p.m.

DemonDragonJ says... #12

griz024, creatures are spells, so I presume that you are referring to instants and sorceries? If so, I agree, since it has been some time since there was a block that focused strongly on those card types.

September 1, 2016 3:51 p.m.

griz024 says... #13

Duh!! Your right "spells" = instants and sorceries is just the vernacular, so i picked it up

September 1, 2016 4:13 p.m.

DarkLaw says... #14

DemonDragonJ If we're playing the technicalities game, a card is only a "spell" on the stack. But yeah, "spells" address instants and sorceries, sometimes anything that isn't a creature, on mtg websites.

This breaks my wife's U tron with thopter sword....

Map for Fair, Fair for combo pieces.

DemonDragonJ says... #17

I like that land very much, but I do believe that its third ability should cost only 3 mana, since it already requires its controller to control three artifacts and then sacrifice the land. I believe that this land shall be excellent for artifact decks, although its final ability is rather expensive. I would very much like to put it into my own artifact deck, but I am not certain if I can find room for it.

Vandalblast and Shatterstorm will be #1 SB cards. :D

September 2, 2016 5:18 a.m.

Lame_Duck says... #22

I guess metalcraft is back, although the fact that it's not actually using the ability word here probably means it's not a common occurrence in the set.

September 2, 2016 5:27 a.m. Edited.

Chandrian says... #23

No news about the artifact-matters Mechanic E yet... let's see if Affinity and/or Tron will go waaay over the top thanks to this set :)

(Btw, Maro mentionned that at some point in time they may create a "new" eternal format (as modern becomes more and more expensive and thus difficult to access for new players... I wonder if they'd rather start this "new" format or ban both Affinity and Tron after the release of Kaladesh)

September 2, 2016 5:38 a.m.

ChiefBell says... #24

Any new format wouldn't have affinity or tron. Both of those decks are ancient.

September 2, 2016 6:41 a.m.

Guftders says... #25

So its just been pointed out on Facebook that it says Story spotlight... So I'm guessing they are making the story related cards even more obvious from now on, and making sure you could see them in the right order

September 2, 2016 6:49 a.m.

DemonDragonJ says... #26

Chandrian; there are enough formats at this point in time; the game does not need any more. If WotC wishes to decrease the price of entry for modern, they should reprint staple cards for it, which is what they are doing with Modern Masters.

September 2, 2016 9:48 a.m.

ChiefBell says... #27

DemonDragonJ - Check Maros blogatog. Theyre moving away from modern and toying with the idea of something else.

September 2, 2016 10:19 a.m.

Chandrian says... #28

They have banned many popular competitive decks in the near past. For this reason I was wondering what WotC would do if both affinity and tron would go over the top after this block:

  • ban both
  • unban stuff
  • move away from modern (altough with the announce of Modern Masters next year this is very unlikely to happen in the immediate future).
September 2, 2016 10:28 a.m.

sylvannos says... #29

Affinity honestly needs a boost. The new land would help a lot in that regard.

Tron could also use something since Eye of Ugin was banned. While Tron is still good, it's been lacking a way to end the game like it used to. Being able to tutor up a Wurmcoil Engine would be nice.

Gifts with Thopter Foundry and Sword of the Meek hasn't been seeing much play anyway.

The only issues I see with this new land is in Vintage because it can "Tinker" up Memory Jar, Black Lotus, Chalice of the Void etc. and the ability to search can't be countered.

It's also concerning for EDH because it's another uncounterable tutor that gets jammed into pretty much every deck playing Sensei's Divining Top, Mox Diamond, Sol Ring, Mana Crypt...or really every EDH deck.

September 2, 2016 10:48 a.m.

griz024 says... #30

omg! that land card is amazing for my daretti edh deck

September 2, 2016 10:48 a.m.

Ohthenoises says... #31

A note about tron: g/r tron is a fringe deck at this point, all of it's bad matchups are well positioned. Furthermore, R/G tron decks are not really reliant on artifacts.

U tron is a deck that exists but is barely even fringe. It's only real presence is in mtgo and even there it's rare to see. If anything in kaladesh is "broken" it would go in U Tron. This wouldn't push it past T1.5 at best in paper.

On affinity: I've been saying since kaladesh was announced that affinity was likely to get the "limiting design space" ban if one was to be issued. Considering that our first taste of Kaladesh was in origins and it brought Hangarback Walker which very nearly was an auto include in affinity due to it's synergy with Master of Etherium and Steel Overseer but hat build was only due to eldrazi winter.

Now that the meta has shifted away from colorless threats Etched Champion makes a return and the deck doesn't need the Walker.

Point being this: if 1/10th of origins yielded a near auto include then the full block is likely to produce some broken stuff.

September 2, 2016 10:56 a.m.

ChiefBell says... #32

You guys need to check the meta before you type things.

Both affinity and tron are the most successful modern decks right now. They are both at the very top of their game at this point. Neither need a boost. Both are very well positioned.

Tron has a tutor in Sanctum of Ugin and has just been given a new way to beat its old nemesis infect in Emrakul, the Promised End which improves the matchup by allowing the player to suicide inkmoth nexus and glistener agents for the win. Its one of the top 10 most played decks of modern right now and certainly among the most played modern decks of all time. It's probably among the top 5 decks right now actually but thats pushing it. The deck is so fast and consistent with its artifact tutors (which are the bread and butter of the deck) that it doesnt care what the opposition is playing. Its slamming t3 wurmcoil or karn most games into t4 ugin and shrugging whether youre BGx or Infect.

Affinity was recently given the sideboard card Ghirapur AEther Grid which allows it to fight through unfavourable board states and remove creatures without detracting from its plan. Its among the top 3 modern decks right now and certainly in the top 5 of all time. It actually has a higher metagame share of high level events than Twin did which people rarely talk about and is a deck that is much more worrying in its ability to enter day 1s as 5% of the meta then suddenly end up as 40% of a top 8. Again like Tron its only become more solidified in its top deck status over time and has never really wavered.

Point being: both decks are exceedingly close to the edge of acceptibility for modern from a speed and consistency point of view. They are right now and have been for some time. Extreme care is advised.

Something strange about that card

Why is the Planeswalker symbol in the back?

September 2, 2016 12:17 p.m.

DarkLaw says... #37

Of course the card is good in EDH, practically everything is. I don't really feel the need to play it in casual EDH though. Incidentally ending up with 3 artifacts isn't something I'd like to rely on or build around. That planeswalker symbol is suspect tho. Maybe the conflict will be between planeswalkers and their supporters and a rival faction? After all, Dovin will be judging what appears to be a Planar Portal.

September 2, 2016 2:18 p.m.

Wabbbit says... #43

A lot of her power level depends on what type of targets there are for her ulti, and even her -2 to a lesser extent. I feel like she'll see at least some play just because of her mana cost. Talking about standard here.

Phaetion says... #46

Geez, too many spoilers so soon. I'm so slow...

Lily is confirmed after Furious Reprisal. Saheeli is... strange. She's good, but her +1 seems off to me. Inventor's Fair is a cool card for artifact decks. At least it's a land slot.

September 2, 2016 2:32 p.m.

I'm curious to see how energy counters work. Like why is it a symbol and now "you get an energy counter?"

That card is incredible, I can't wait to support for it.
