Kaladesh release date: September 30th (2016).
Three-letter code: KLD
Number of cards: 264
Prerelease: September 24-25, 2016
Glad to see Chief of the Foundry back, if it fits anywhere it would be here. He has plenty to pump with all the thopters and servos running around.
Workshop Assistant seems decent. The stats are anemic, but the ability goes great with the puzzleknots for limited filler. I think it being 3 mana pushes it out of the realm of standard playability however.
Foundry Inspector is EDH gold, not to mention standard. Awesome ability and 3 power for 3 mana, what's not to like? He might even be good enough for modern. *Insert argument about dying to bolt here*
Self-Assembler seems like filler for a limited deck, with extra benefits for taking multiples. If you live in Magic Christmas Land and get 3 or 4 of these in limited that's going to be tough to deal with for any deck.
I wonder if a new breed of affinity is in the making, something more mid-rangey and value based...

So about that Oviya Pashiri, Sage Lifecrafter..... she belongs in a Shattergang Brothers deck. Just like Daretti, Ingenious Iconoclast does.
Quiz Time! No looking this up. Oviya Pashiri, Sage Lifecrafter is a near 100% upgrade to which of the cards below?
Golgari Guildmage
Mogg War Marshal
Nether Traitor
Sakura-Tribe Elder
Skirsdag High Priest
Tymaret, the Murder King
Jade Mage
Carnage Altar
Lightning Greaves
Demonic Tutor
Rampant Growth
Golgari Charm
Terminate
Bitterblossom
Cream of the Crop
Goblin Bombardment
Night Soil
Shivan Harvest
Hint: You could say the card it's replacing is more thematically.

A new crappy counterspell spoiled just. Wizards must really hate control. Probably good in EDH, but not elsewhere.

It's a pretty good counterspell for edh. Your choice of Cancel, Misdirection(but better cause you can re-select multiple targets), or Twincast for .
September 15, 2016 1:39 a.m.
Wow the only thing that sounds better than all of that is if it also had Stifle attached.
September 15, 2016 1:48 a.m.
I guess blue is only allowed to have good counterspells in edh now??
Talrond is happy!

AwezomePozzum Only because Planer Chaos screwed everything up; where white gets counterspells; Black gets damage reduction; blue gets true-removal, etc.

AgentGreen,
And Nether Void, Red Elemental Blast, Chalice of the Void, Pyroblast, Guttural Response, Warping Wail, Rebuff the Wicked, Dawn Charm, Presence of the Master, Burnout, Avoid Fate, Null Brooch, Dash Hopes, and probably many others ...

That new blue modal spell really needed to either be 3cmc or let you choose two things.
September 15, 2016 9:54 a.m.
fumigate does very well if you have Selfless Spirit on the board

A 5 CMC board wipe in standard?
Huh. It's not Damnation, but it's better than 6.

AwezomePozzum Standard also has Planar Outburst but the newer boardwipe is better imo

Yeah I forgot about that one, but it is great. Maybe in Trostani or Oloro EDH it'l be good.

I like syndicate trafficker with Oviya Pashiri, Sage Lifecrafter.
Its not anything gamechanging but I like how they will work together .

AwezomePozzum Well W/B control needs a board wipe since Languish is rotating out; Fumigate is better than outburst; but it still hurts to not have a 4CMC wipe

Pretty sure wotc said they decided 4 mana wraths were too good for stanard and tgat 5 cmc would be the norm going forward.

Fiend Hunter, now available in "dwarf."

monkeyprophet I agree. Solid removal, strong synergies, and fabricate provides a lot of flexibility.
Here are my thoughts on each color so far:
Blue looks like it has great potential as a pairing with other colors, but weak on its own. It places a huge emphasis on artifacts, so if you don't get decent artifacts you might have some issues going mono-blue. Also heavy emphasis on bounce, but blue's ETB critters look less efficient than say, green or white.
Green has some really strong rares, and is the most heavily invested in energy. They also have the best value on their ETB effects I'd say. Green's strength in drafting really seems to depend on how well you are able to support the energy needs of all your creatures.
Black has some pretty strong synergies on the common/uncommon level, but a lot of (IMO) junk rares. Nothing in black (barring mythics of course) screams pack 1 pick 1 to me, except maybe Gonti, Lord of Luxury.
White looks really solid on all levels. Excellent rares, strong removal, and plenty of good ways to beat down.
Then we have red. Red's rares look very potent (I will not want to be facing down a Lathnu Hellion or Skyship Stalker in draft), and solid aggro on the uncommon/common level. However, red removal feels weaker than it has been in the past, often making you work harder to get what you need.
As far as draft archetypes go, the strongest contenders I'm seeing are:
- U/R artifacts
- R/W artificer/dwarf aggro
- R/G energy aggro
- U/g/w energy / value
- R/B control - especially if you pull Unlicensed Disintegration
- B/W aristocrats (more like artifcrats?)
- Draft Metalwork Colossus, Foundry Inspector, then take every artifact you see and figure out what colors you play later (especially if you pull an Aether Hub, Prophetic Prism, etc.)
What do you guys think? Is my analysis on point, or do you disagree? I'm wondering what everyone else thinks of the set and potential draft archetpyes.

I feel like the red gearhulk is just going to win so many games, in a bomb heavy high cmc format like draft is that ability is usually just "draw 3" every time. Also, goes toe to toe with anything because of the 6 power of first strike.

Fairgrounds warden wishes it was as good as fiend hunter.
No blinking shenanigans? No ty
September 15, 2016 3:34 p.m.
In general Wizards tries to not print such abuseable ETB triggers anymore. See the wording on cards like Banisher Priest or Faith Unbroken for a non-creature variant.
I doubt we'll see cards worded like Fiend Hunter or Tidehollow Sculler again any time soon, if at all.
In STANDARD, it's basically a Fiend Hunter. If only it was a Human.. I was saying for a while the single card Mono-White Humans really needed to be unquestionably best-deck-in-format was a Fiend Hunter.

AwezomePozzum says... #38
Fairgrounds Warden is worse than Fiend Hunter in the sense that it targets your opponent's creatures only, but better because it doesn't cost double white, so it'/ easier to cast in tricolor or some dualcolor decks.

EDIT: Sorry I thought I was in the finance thread. Lemme just say I love Pia Nalaar vs Reflector Mage.

In standard it's a Fiend Hunter. Of course it's not as good in formats where you can take advantage of the permanent exile trick, but hey, that wasn't even supposed to be a thing anyway.
September 15, 2016 8 p.m.
tettsui77: I don't know if you meant the way Fiend Hunter worked, but Spell Queller works the same way where if you blink it with the exile ability on the stack; you will exile the spell forever. If that's what you mean...?

So now I am definitely creating a dwarfs and artifacts deck. Let all the jankiness ensue

So, with that train...
You've been train-ing for this moment. Now you must make your opponents steam-ing mad as you de-rail his life total. While you're on track, you must understand Wizard's loco-motive for adding the card in the set. Choo on that for a moment while I run away with you guys who are (understandably) holding torches and pitch forks. Did you like my trains of thought?
CHOO CHOO, m-f***ers!
Alright...my work is done here.

Phaetion That was arduous. I'd like the first express out of here.
