kengiczar, I guess you're right; I didn't notice at first that every single card revealed so far is its own recurring source of energy counters, so maybe it'll be fine. Having 8 of those symbols lined up is super ugly and difficult to read at a glance though.

There's a lot of interesting stuff here. I like that architect of the Untamed.

Oh! Hey! Dwarf Tribal!

Love that the energy counters go on yourself rather than the permanent. It makes it much easier to maintain after board wipes, especially in EDH.

Also, notice how the three we have so far, all generate their Energy counter OUTSIDE of their own impact (excuse the bad wording, super tired).

Aetherworks Marvel generates them when permanents are sent to grave. The Gitrog Monster shenanigans can make counters, infinite sac combos, you can even generate the counters by cracking a fetch or Wasteland for example. It's SOO GOOD.

Aetherstorm Roc can generate the counters from any other creatures just entering the battle (Deadeye Navigator anyone). Although this one's way to spend your energy isn't great.

And Architect of the Untamed generates them from... playing land. Ok not great, but you get extra value from fetches and the like. Probably a better way to spend those energy counters (slightly).

Personally, I like the Marvels way to both generate the counters, AND what it does with them. Really looking forward to seeing how they execute the mechanic in the rest of the set.

This set looks awful so far. Energy counters are super parasitic and generally a poor design. They add too much complexity to simple games as you have to count them. :/ really so far it feels like someone's custom set that wizards decided to print. Saheeli is pretty bland, her ult is way too close to Daretti, Ingenious Iconoclast for comfort, and he was released two weeks ago. Honestly I like Fabricate the most out of the new mechanics. They introduced a new creature type (aetherborn) that will probably be phased out completely after these two sets. These dwarves have no mechanical similarities to the old dwarves. Finally, vehicles are cool, but did they really need a new border? No.

Not hyped at all for Kaladesh now :(

I will say that the Aetherstorm Roc and Architect of the Untamed will hopefully end up in my Roon of the Hidden Realm Combo deck. It's a small interaction for EDH but creating 1,000,000 6/6 tokens could be worth it.

You know, we had mana symbol rmana symbol w weenies, so now we get mana symbol rmana symbol w dwarves? I'm liking this set so far!

Plus I already fainted when I saw vehicles!

September 2, 2016 7:51 p.m.

Not excited. Vehicles are dumb imo, mounts I could see but this is a fantasy game not a sci fi game. The new border is awful to boot.

Dwarves are super random and the one spoiled looks nothing like a dwarf, if it didn't have creature type I'd never have known.

And a new symbol for energy counters? Super lame. Again: sci fi not fiction. And enough with new symbols, especially ones unique to a block. Yes Phyrexian mana had its own symbol and of course Wastes but were used to seeing symbols for things related to mana. Next thing you know we'll be memorizing symbols for abilities like vigilance. We're a bright group. We can handle words, we don't need the kindergarten treatment.

Give me an armored horse for my paladin, not a dragster for my pilot. Come on.

This may be the first set I only buy singles of, maybe even take a hiatus till we get back to a plane that doesn't use modern technology. Leave the podraces to Star Wars...

Named_Tawyny says... #9

I'm wondering about the p/t formatting on the vehicles - having the p/t in the corner rather than 'this becomes an artifact creature with pt of etc..."

I wonder if that's going to be a permanent change for things that can turn themselves into creatures? Manlands, etc...

September 2, 2016 8:17 p.m.

wargodmogis says... #10

Jimmy_Chinchila Your free to not liking the flavor of the Vehicles, and tech of Kaledesh, but it's not sci-fi. I think it's actually science fantasy. But if you don't like that type of fantasy that's still fine.

September 2, 2016 8:25 p.m.

square711 says... #11

"but were used to seeing symbols for things related to mana"

But energy counters are basically a new type of mana. I mean, you use them to pay costs, which is exactly what mana is used for. I don't see what's the big deal with having a symbol for them.

Also, how the hell is Kaladesh sci-fi? Just because the vehicles are named vehicles? They don't even look like vehicles. The plane's aesthetics are much closer to steampunk than to sci-fi. If you show anyone a picture of Skysovereign and ask them if they think it looks futuristic, they'll laugh.

September 2, 2016 8:30 p.m.

saj0219 says... #12

square711... Steampunk is a sub genre of science fiction, so noting that the set seems very sci-fi-esque and pointing out that the aesthetics feel like steampunk are not mutually exclusive.

On a mor related note: has wizards been trying to make playable, non broken walkers at 3 mana more in the recent sets? It feels like every set has an attempt (with varying degrees of success)...

September 2, 2016 9:50 p.m.

Vectoro says... #13

square711Your definition of sci-fi is very limited. Steampunk is a subgenre of sci-fi, and I'd definitely say the Skysovereign looks futuristic in a similar way as the SHIELD Helicarrier from the Avengers series.

As far as the energy counters go, I will agree that they are being used in essentially the same way as mana symbols, but I'd argue that the way they depict colored mana in quantities greater than 3 of a single type has the same problems. Take Khalni Hydra for instance. Sure it doesn't come up often, but it's still frustrating to read.

genericaura says... #14

Guys. Stop complaining about how Kaladesh is sci-fi. We had Mirrodin before, dabbling with tech shouldn't be surprising. On a more positive note, new spoiled card, and the first with Fabricate more than one.

Inventor's Fair has got me really excited. An artifact tutor with metal craft, love it. And Saheeli Rai looks really fun to play with. My Grixis EDH has gotten a bunch of cool planeswalkers lately...

I like Cultivator of Blades as a cheaper Pathbreaker Ibex. Problem is how to up its power. Hmmm...

Creeperhulk comes to mind. As does the Ibex and its ilk. Gigantomancer makes me want to giggle like a school girl. I'll have to see what tricks I can pull.

That small-animal-looking thing appears to be a less good Solemn Simulacrum. The art's cute though.

September 2, 2016 10:28 p.m.

genericaura says... #19

ThinkJank I was actually gonna suggest it to a friend of mine who has a Daretti, Scrap Savant EDH for that exact reason. As it is, he's pretty standard for an artifact (2/2 for 3) plus sort of a Bottle Gnomes smashed into the back half of sadbot. Good value.

Wabbbit says... #20

genericaura: Where did you find those?!

EDIT: Wait I found them.

September 2, 2016 10:59 p.m. Edited.

I like the art of the fox-looking thing! C'mon fox tribal!

I suppose that the Izzet League, the the Necro-alchemist stitchers of Innistrad and many of the artificers have a mechanical subtheme. I guess I look at Magic from a Skyrim or Warcraft perspective where mechanical things are simplistic and are fueled by magic rather than actual energy sources. I'm super old school where to me Ornithopter is made of wood. I just reaaaaally don't want to start seeing guns and cannons, anything beyond rudimentary explosives and I like my projectiles to be arrows or flung axes and spears, when they start giving equipment that are like lightning guns or some shit I'll be pissed. Again, vehicles are already treading that line to me.

MythicSpoiler is a good site that is pretty quick to compile spoilers from across the web. And of course the ability to see the cards from complete sets going back a ways is nice.

On the plus side, dwarves could be cool if they look anything like Dwarven Warriors or Balthor. Maybe a Dwarven planeswalker!

September 2, 2016 11:11 p.m.

KingTorg1 says... #24

The wording on the Crew mechanic makes it seem as though you can tap already tapped creatures. (unlike the wording on Burn at the Stake for example) Am I right on this or no?

Also, the flavor of Vehicles is amazing. "My squirrel just drove a skiffer piloting a dragster piloting a battleship INTO YOUR FACE!"

casey says... #27

Does fabricate 2 create a 2/2 token? Or two 1/1 tokens?

I would imagine the reason energy counters get a symbol is that on future cards they won't need the reminder text, which will save quite a bit of room on a card for other text.

Did everyone see the 3GG 8/8 Trample?

September 3, 2016 3:42 a.m.

Probably not busted, but Wizards, this is low, even for you. How is this a mythic?

Oh yeah, draft. I just thought.

September 3, 2016 5:13 a.m.

beakedbard says... #33

Only a few cards released and energy decks already look like they have potential. I much prefer counters that go on you instead of a permanent. Just need a few early energy builders or energy based tutors and this could work.

September 3, 2016 6:49 a.m.

DarkLaw says... #34

I think that the energy cards look kind of bad, but there's that one which could be fun to mess around with.

DarkLaw says... #37

Honestly, Verdurous Hulk seems balanced. That's power creep for you.

September 3, 2016 9:57 a.m.

Argy says... #38

I want to Crew many Vehicles so badly.

I think I'm gonna play mana symbol rmana symbol w, unsurprisingly.

September 3, 2016 11:17 a.m.

ChiefBell says... #39

DarkLaw - Well it's a strictly better Armament Corps but then Armament Corps didn't see much (any?) play. If it turns an unplayable card into a playable one it's not really the bad kind of power creep. The bad kind of power creep is turning cards that are totally playable as is and then making them insane.

September 3, 2016 11:29 a.m.

ChiefBell says... #40

I think part of what makes it a mythic is that the turn it comes in it can give a 1/1 4 counters making it a 5/5 which would allow you to swing for the win. Furthemore it gives you A LOT of guaranteed value even if it eats a removal spell (like it literally doesn't just "die to removal" if you're smart) by distributing buffs across multiple creatures.

It's probably a mythic for a combination of three factors then. It's an efficiently costed beater on its own. It allows you to win suddenly out of nowhere and also gives you a solid body even if you don't. It can't be removed cleanly given that it distributes counters.

September 3, 2016 11:33 a.m.

Chandrian says... #41

Also notice that the "Crew" mechanic states "tap creatures with total power x or more" (the highest number we're likely to see is 3). So you can play Verdureous Gearhulk, give 4 counters on the vehicle of your choice and immediately tap the hulk to have the vehicle attack.

I gotta say I like the "vehicle" mechanic, it's like a revers equipment

September 3, 2016 11:50 a.m.

Named_Tawyny says... #42

Chandrian You can't do that, unfortunately. You'd need to choose the targets when the ability goes on the stack and, at that time, the vehicle isn't a creature in your scenario.

September 3, 2016 12:14 p.m.

DarkLaw says... #43

ChiefBell I think you misunderstood. I meant that power creep is the reason why a strictly better 5CMC 8/8 Trample isn't actually busted. I mean, I would play Thragtusk over this any day.

Thragtusk also shows off why this should be a rare. The only reason I could think why it couldn't is because of limited, where it's busted.

Also, TCC has a preview card. Don't get your hopes up though.

September 3, 2016 12:26 p.m.

Chandrian says... #44

Oh damn... well spotted.

Well if you have 2 vehicles and 1 creature on board you can Crew the first vehicle, cast the Gearhulk; give the first vehicle the counters and crew the second one with the Gearhulk... more complicated but still rewarding

September 3, 2016 12:26 p.m.

Wabbbit says... #45
